U-2 Dragon Lady conducts first flight with upgraded package!

- Lockheed Martin's secretive Skunk Works, in collaboration with the U.S. Air Force, has successfully conducted the first flight of the U-2 Dragon Lady equipped with an enhanced avionics suite and cockpit displays.
This test flight is the result of a US$50 million contract for the Avionics Tech Refresh (ATR) which was awarded to Lockheed in 2020
The U-2 spy plane is primarily renowned for its high-altitude capabilities played a pivotal role during the Cold War era.
But the aircraft is supposed to be retired in 2026.

With ASAT weapons, we can’t rely exclusively on satellites. Until the high altitude drone is operationalized upgrading the U2 makes sense
Make IT the high attitude drone lol slap some lazer guided bombs on that bad boi and send em off, hell at that high up we could use kinetic weapons
Funny how that aircraft was going to be phased out of service when i joined the RNLAF years ago. Now i am retired and it is being upgraded again.
that u2 only got shot down because of a malfunction ( it was a stall if i remember right ). he had to go lower were the air was denser so he could restart the jet but it was at the worse possible time.
Colonel Fletcher Prouty in his book The Secret Team or JFK Assassination mentioned an external hydrogen tank necessary for U2 engine to restart at high altitude was most likely tampered with (just not enough will serve the purpose); Ike had issued "NO FLIFHT OVER COMMUNIST COUNTRIES" order but Powers flew with everything against practice (stopped without any IDs).
I worked on the U2/TR1 back in the 80s/90s. I figured it was about to be phased out when I left in 1994. I know the SR-71 was phased out by then except as a high velocity test platform for NASA.

The thing that seems super impractical is the funky landing gear arrangement. It has always bothered me, haha.

This U-2 and RQ-4 makes zero sense unless they have RQ already built to take over and keeping that one underwraps for now
