Why Russia made a mistake by sending Kazan to Cuba?

- Recently, a potent Russian naval flotilla docked pretty close to the United States.
The Yasen-M class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine Kazan along with Project 22350 frigate Admiral Gorshkov sailed to the Cuban capital Havana supported by heavy ocean-going tug Nikolai Chiker and the Project 23130 replenishment oiler Academic Pashin.
This was a major show of force but may have cost Russia.
After the Kazan showed up in Cuba, and the euphoria of “how close we are to the USA”, Russian experts began to realize that joy was turning to sadness. The Russian site Top War calls this a major mistake, saying, “Americans are already laughing at us.”
Top War mentions, “Some media praised this move near the United States, but it’s actually a bad move that will hurt our defense.”
“If it’s not impressive, Americans will laugh at us. This move wasn’t well thought out because it sent the submarine right into the American anti-submarine zone, losing its stealth advantage.”
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes why Russia made a mistake by sending Kazan to Cuba?

A Frigate, a tug, and a sub. Sounds like the opening line of a joke.
One Bourbon, One Scotch, and one Beer... George Thorogood
2 tugs lol 😂
Walk into a bar.
😂😂😂
And commanded by a thug.
Our elite scuba team secretly placed a location beacon on it's hull. Currently, the sub is at 4°32'33"N 48°45'10"W somewhere off the coast of French Guyana in the South Atlantic. The Captain had eggs and grits for breakfast, followed by a cup of coffee.
I am fairly certain they do not have grits in Ruskyland, but other than that it sounds good to me. I know we have agents in cuba that could do just that.
Russian captain had borscht and tea for lunch then ran fire drills while stopping water leaks in aft output shaft, his X-O likes Lady gaga very loud........😅
Then yoyu placed the beacon on the wrong sub. Eggs are too expensive in Russia, and no sane Russian would break its fast without vodka.
Why doesnt anyone mention another embarrassing thing about Russia visit to Cuba. They had to bring a tug.
they needed the tug to bring enough Rubles to buy fuel (assuming Cuba had any to sell).
Tug got to Guide big ships to the port. Y’all don’t know what’s a tug job.
@@kwtinternational4451if Cuba was so friendly why didn't a Cuban tug guide them???
Oh that's right, they aren't so friendly..
@@wayne251975 they poor. They can’t afford a nice boat there and it’s embargo country. Can’t buy a tug if they want it to . It’s all out dated junk. If they do have tug . It won’t be working because they don’t have parts for it to run it
Tugs are required equipment in the Russian bathtub navy.
Is there any doubt that a US submarine or two were not shadowing both Russian vessels, recording their acoustic characteristics?
Russia knew about that and ew to us record that what it got second russian sub can send many sounds
Ok bot breath Ruck Fussia .💙💛
Don't forget the Brit's.
The Kazan’s tail, the USS Helena, sailed into Guantanamo Bay the next day.
That’s for sure with Poseidon sub hunter planes flying an circling them
The tug was there in case anything needed to be dragged back home. Now THAT was smart.
I just figured a tug was tagging along
One follows their aircraft carrier constantly when it runs
It's the Russian Navy's American express card. They don't leave home without it!!!😂
The American sub being presented as a Russian sub is telling.
Telling what? Pray, tell.
Or do you think that Americans are unaware of their own flag or do not know their own submarines?
It would actually be rather counter-productive, as US submarines are qualitatively better than Russian ones. No offence, but the military budget of the USA is between 8 and 9 times the one of Russia now that they have increased it.
So, what were you saying about "telling" something?
The U.S. probably had 2 Virginia class SUBS listening for their SONAR signatures. Now the U.S. knows what their ships sound like.
the opposite can be true too
@@krimokrimov6050
Both sides send their most advance subs to each other doorstep but you never know
This was just a bad idea
@@verdebusterAPagreed
😂😂😂😂😅
I think about six of our boats were shadowing them the entire time. I'm pretty sure the Navy even knows what their menu was every day based on communication interceptions.
Because the US upgraded and recommissioned the SOSUS arays, now the US Navy has the Kasan's acoustic signature recorded. Way to go, Russia!
Every decision made in the Kremlin has been premature and wrong. Always guided by anger instead of brains.
Yeah that what you think, seems to be lots of experts here
@@johnny9092 there's a reason why US Navy's Ohio, Virginia & Seawolf never sail only miles off Russia's coast, they can record our acoustics too
@@NightWiz11 Fair point! But it didn’t go submerged and stealth mode so how can you record acoustics when it didn’t submerged? Please explain to me
@@johnny9092 it did ofcourse submerged on the way there through the Atlantic, it only surfaced when nearing its destination, Cuba
If not for the incompetence of our enemies, they would be dangerous.
yeah. the west should worry about idiots from the inside, not the outside.
Don’t speak so soon we might have trump back in the White House and the world as well as our enemies will be saying the same thing about US!
Potent? One of 4 ships was a bloody tug 😂
It was a tug-o-war !!! Most potent tug ever!!
Major show of force? A Frigate, a Nuclear Powered Fast Attack Submarine, a Fleet Replenishment Oiler, and a Fleet Ocean Going Tug? You are easily impressed if you think that is a major show of force.
Well, for Russia this is a Mayor Show of Force.
What do you expect from a country who had a whole navy wiped out by a country without a navy (well, two minesweepers, but they are in another sea).
Was looking forward to seeing Admiral Kuznetsovs' newest stealth black smoke screen.
The powerful Kutznezov has gone full stealth forever XD
Pity.
Yet another mind boggling decision from Russia
I have no doubt that the USA knew the movements of these ships. I'm sure the Navy was all over it.
they watched while eating popcorn :D eager to see this shit hit the fan for a great and ridiculous show of next-level stupid
America has been tracking that Russian sub for years.
The U.S. used the time to train and gather intel against the adversarial equipment. If they didn't know the sonar signature of the new sub before, well, they do now.
I've known some submariners. Hardcore is something of an understatement. They would have taken this as an unannounced training exercise.
Well, not very difficult un the XXI century, with this thing called "the Internet" where you can find all the movements of any ship which has the transponders on... which is what ships do when they are not going to war or trafficking drugs or illegal immigrants.
And well, there are also these pesky contraptions called "aeroplanes" and "commercial satellites"... oh, and some dudes called "Russians" that happen to announce the visit weeks before.
It's much worse than getting the Kasan-M's acoustic signature.
That boat when straight through the US Navy's ASW training range, being tracked and followed the whole way.
Now the US Navy has detailed information on how to track the boat from all significant bearings and ranges.
They couldn't hide from a Virginia class as it was, now the US Navy will be able to detect it with confidence at greatly extended ranges.
They have essentially made that whole class obsolete now.
Yes, it seems pretty amazing that so few are aware it traveled right through the primary antisubmarine training area.
@@john_in_phoenix They might as well have handed us the blueprints.
They did hand us a textbook on how to track the Kasan-M.
We know how to do the rest already.
In submarine warfare, detection is 99.94% of the job.
can't they just swap the prop and replace the tiles and now the acoustic signature is different? If i had to send a sub through such places i'd pick one that was due for maintenance
@@robertsaget9697 Besides props, a big part of identifying a sub is machinery noise. Things like cooling pumps for nuclear reactors, air purification, etc. Replacing a prop isn't at all easy, they often take a year or more to machine, and multiple years to design and test. It certainly is a major drydock operation, and the current prop was designed to give the most power with the least noise.
@@robertsaget9697 It would be different, but that wouldn't solve their problem. Changing the anechoic tiles wouldn't change anything if they were in working condition. They don't make noise; they just absorb some of it.
Every time a US sub encounters another sub, they record it and file it's acoustic signature. Even our own subs. This way they have a better idea what is out there. Remember subs are blind, so the world is like being a bat to them. They listen to everything and hear everything.
However, the Russians sending on of their best subs through our training area let our experts listen to it from all angles and at all practical ranges.
Basically, they just handed the US Navy the textbook on finding and tracking their most dangerous sub.
Bubbleheads (US Navy submariners) are enjoying an early Christmas and April Fool's Day combined right now. For the next few years, when you see a bubblehead lift a glass to toast, it'll be to the health of whichever Russian idiot came up with this idea.
Why are they talking about the Russian sub, but showing the American Ohio class 2:16?
Trolling for comments I suspect, and I fell for it
I guess just to fill in time with some submarine related footage.
Kazan was launched in 2017 and comissioned in 2021. Severodovinsk - 7 years earlier. It is well known fact, that however impressive initially, Russian subs get louder as they age. Significantly. Case is - claim about Russian 'mistake' is as bogous as VPN add, because USA most likely had this profile for YEARS now. Actual photo of Yasen class is from 4:51 onward.
They've also not figured out how to properly seal their reactors on their subs to keep from irradiating the crew. Not that they give a shit about the crew as witnessed by them not letting us rescue the crew aboard the Kursk. They let their crew die rather than let us rescue them because it would hurt their Russian pride. Must be paradise to be in the Russian military
I remember that the SOSUS underwater microphone system was given to civilian science (I think woods hole) the Russians can't be that stupid to think we just gave up listening underwater
Yes they can, look at all the stupid decisions they have made in Ukraine.💙💛
Got a definite noise signature of every Russian vessel.
They had to stop in Cuba to stock up on duct tape, to hold the ships together 😂😂😂
But they’re where out of luck, all Duct they had been used to keep that coconut on your neck to crack!
A US Navy / RCN task group followed these vessels all the way down the eastern seaboard. A Canadian RCAF CP-140 Aurora also moved in lock step down the eastern seaboard tracking that sub as it sailed to Havana. Separately, a RCN AOPS on patrol also paid a invited port visit to Havana at the very same time the Russian Navy was there in port. I'm sure they were acoustically listening while docked next door to the Ruskies
You left out the part where it sailed right through the primary antisubmarine training area of the US Navy. It was accompanied by a much larger contingent of US Navy vessels. This was a political decision that did no good for the Russian Navy.
Not to mention the pics of Kazan sailing into Havana Harbour with big holes in the acoustic tiles on the Hull - which would make it more noisy because of water drag and risk more tiles falling off! 😊
Apparently the sub runs on pure Vodka
You know it is a Russian ship, they brought a tug.🤣
A Canadian naval vessel was tied up in that Cuban port when that flotilla arrived, so they got a good look at the Russians.
Freedom of navigation exercises, completely routine. America knows where all the nuclear subs are virtually all the time.
Bingo
Not just this one.
Did he mention all the missing acoustic tiles missing. That boat must be deafening all our sonar operators
Talking about a Russian Fast Attack Submarine and showing a photo of an American Ohio Class Trident SSGN Submarine is somewhat confusing.
They thought they were sailing through international waters .. instead, they sailed through a forest of our sensors.
The day after the Kazan entered Havana harbor, its tail the fast attack submarine USS Helena sailed into Guantanamo Bay. Also, photos of the Kazan in Havana shows that it was missing several acoustic tiles which would have made it noisy and giving it unique signature. 😂
Training mission for the USN.
Not a major show of force.
Major show of farce
Kazan has 50 missile ( half of them nuclear) and was sailing close to the US coast!..so then tell me what is a show of force???
@rhodium1096 it's not. Have you not seen the 50-year-old Patriot? One system knocked that d*** missile down in Ukraine.Give me a break.
@@RTACDaughters Sorry but Ukraine fake propaganda about to intercept Khinzal is for fools!
The acoustic profile that you mentioned was already categorized within two months after initial build by the United States
All four were totally sound signature mapped. Bet on it.
I thought, as soon as I heard Kazan was with the group, that we now have an acoustic profile of the class.
I once heard a guy say that Russian submarines are "very quiet and hard to detect, for the first year or so. After that not so much" as this is hearsay take it with however much salt you want
Must be joking….. are we really saying that it took a Russian sub to cruise right off the coast of FL for us to develop an acoustic profile on it? Cmon guys don’t take the bait navy heard the ocean gate sub implode while it was nearly 4000m down with no propulsion. We’re well able to deal with subs in ways you would find incomprehensible.
The only way for Russia to prevent the US getting the acoustic profile of their ships is to never run them on their own power. I kind of doubt that's a good idea.
All in all, the Russians sent four ships to Cuba. So what?
At least they made it, I remember when Iran made a big deal about their navy, their plan was to sail to America and show their power. Well they made it about 500 miles, had to abandon plan and tow a bunch back. They haven’t tried since
you're kidding right?
the US knows exactly where every Chinese and Russian submarine is at every moment and has since the day that each was launched.
What was the tug there for..? Do they have such low confidence in their fleet?
This was great! Oh wait, you meant for Russia?
Aaron over at Subbrief: (not about Kazan) ".... and she produces 140 decibels at 1 foot. How we know that is none of your damn business."
Hardly “flotilla “.
Two of the 4 ships: An oiler and a tugboat. Both to make sure the Admiral Gorshov makes it back. I shiver in fear.
anyone remember that Canada was able to pull up next to the Russian ships in the same harbour parking lot!! just saying
Maybe they thought, in their minds, that they were awesome and mighty
They really don`t care about noise anymore.
I relish it when Russia is that close to the United States: such a beautiful couple!😊
But we also sent ships and subs presumably, so they can acusticly do the same and may have "GAMED" us. What we don't know is if Russia believed the subs signature was already compomised, therfore sending it was a move to have us counter with navy vessels thry needed signatures on.
Russia did not make a mistake, now they know what American survailiance capabilities are.
Hmm. I wonder if that brand new Canadian AOPV ship that sailed into Havana Harbour got any Intel on Kazan ... like maybe taking photos of her screw (propeller) from a little submersible sled?
"...a potent Russian naval flotilla"...is playing fast and loose with the term "potent". Seriously? I can't imagine this caused concern within the US Navy.
But I would have assumed Russia accounted for USA to be listening to their subs so they must of had a plan?
really
A political decision not based on military common sense.
Some things are just not possible
@@cedriceric9730 we are talking about a superpower country that has nuclear weapons and goes to space here not some small island with a few people lol
@@riccccccardo You give too much credit to those dumb Russians.
How is giving up the signiture of 1 new vessel seen as negative, rather than obtaining EVERY ENEMY SIGNATURE WITH THE NEW SHIP?
On a new ship, every boat in the water is going to "look" different.
Mocking the Russians for a poorly thought out deployment and then using stock pictures of U.S missile submarines does not encourage a sense of professionalism.
Why is there a USA flag on the Russian Sub @ 3:33
The US navy, and shared intelligence, have likely had the acoustic profiles on file since shortly after the sun was launched, of course, there is value in having a recent, verified profile on hand.
The US was so intimidated that it send a nuclear sub to Guantanamo the next day, much to the dismay of the Cuban government.
If they wanted to go stealth for strategic advantage they would have. This is just flexing
Maybe transport Phutin's gold to Cuba
or some kind of "Hunt for red october" scenario
I can well imagine P8 Poseidon’s will be all over it when it leaves Cuba.
The Black Sea isn’t safe so they had to move the fleet to Cuba
Idk. Just alter the props or add some dimples to convince us we have the profile. Misinformation is a powerful tool.
Not a mistake, it's either a modified Kazan or a sub that will be modified with the latest technology.
😂😂😂😂😂
They had tiles missing like all their subs.
cope cage?
2 boats and tug with a slow moving supply truck hardly qualifies as a "Flotilla"
russian fleet?
No one has mentioned that the sub was falling apart or why a tug has to follow the fleet
Ok they learn about the Russian sub but the US sent a attack sub, didn't Russia learn about the attack sub, it goes both ways!
Every Russian sub has a US hunte killer sub as a shadow
lol good luck with that
the submarine lost it's stealth alright - a lot of the 'stealth' tiles have fallen off!
It's annoying when they talk about a specific class of weapon system or unit, and then pollute the video with completely unrelated units. If they are talking about a Leopard 2, I want to see a Leopard 2. If they are talking about the Gerald R Ford then that is what I want to see.
US was able to track Kazan because now they know what it looks like on screen.
lol
It is, I believe, confusing to the uninitiated to describe a Russian Yassen sub while showing images of American submarines as shown starting at 2:15.
Wrong move by the orcs!
0:45 - "A major show of force", more like a major show of farce.
Genius!
This is no mistake. This is a warning to US.
And do what? NOTHING!
They are isolated, thousands of miles away to be resupplied and supported. They are being tracked and can easily be anilated if needs be.
How is this a warning this has to be a bot account to not realize how stupid that statement sounds. Or maybe he doesn't realize how big the US navy is..
A warning that Russia is so dilapidated and mismanaged that their desperation may not know any bounds? What is it you think America would be afraid of with only 2 missile carrying ships of which neither had nuclear weapons on board? You just sailed by the most heavily guarded coastline in the world, with 2 boats incapable of breaking through the missile defense systems of any strategically important city on the East Coast...let alone the destroyers following...I am not sure how this is a threat. It just made sure Cuba will have less economic support from the region as now they will be seen as re-affirming ties to Russia and taking on the role of puppets, combine this with their support of terrorism in South and Central America, it was a move that set them back 20+ yrs.
An ocean Tug and an Oiler..... Well, one has to wonder what will break down next for the Bolsheviks????
Hehehehehe 😂😂😂😂😂 "major show of force"! They didn't forget the tug boat! 😂
A submarine, an oiler, a frigate, and a tugboat does NOT constitute a "flotilla," lol. I would call it a "task group," and the task was to buoy the Cuban government while giving nothing in return and to threaten the US Navy, while pretending they have some stroke across the world.
A sonar profile is built on every single seriously capable enemy warship or submarine as soon as it leaves port, I promise you. We don't wait for them to come to us. We are waiting and listening.
- Former Surface Sonar Technician, USN.
USN knew of what happened to the Titan submersible soon after it happened, and while it was more than 3km deep. I sleep well.
Its standard practice for the Russians to send tugs with their fleet because their propulsion systems suck
Oh my god not again. There are two modes in every military system: war time and peace time. Every F-35 flies with luneberg reflectors near Russian systems, so that both they can be detected by civilian radars and their radar signatures can not be found and tested against. Russia even might be testing their detectability or USA countermeasures. We don't know if they have spies in USA and waiting for detection reports. Everyone seems to forget about Walker class of submarines. It's a tango between two superpowers and we are just couch analysts watching the show.
They showing how strong they are
S500 is destroyed. Waiting for the video.
The US Navy has the recordings of its screws now this may prove to be troublesome to the Russian subs because now we’ll know which sub it is..
lemme shorten the video for you. by surfacing in cuba - it gave american ai powered listening machines a chance to make an acoustic profile of it. for future wars. 😁
Anyone go to work needing a mechanic and a fuel can to willow you? Would you be considered “flexing” if your car need a mechanic and a fuel can following you?
They had that profile years ago, our submarines patrol constantly for new submarines for these profiles everyday in the north Atlantic, this fact is nothing new.
At 2:16 a Columbia Class American Nuclear submarine is shown but the narrator continues to talk about the Kazan which is a 13 year old Russian submarine, the US Navy was so not concerned that send an even older submarine build in 1986 USS Helena Nuclear Attack submarine to observe.
Funny we got microphones all over in the ocean
ASW forever! Gather those freqs and db levels fellas. The never ending skirmish.
The thickening of the Barents Sea ice has scattered both boomers and the attack boats. Some are drifting among the disrupted currents of the AMOC and the crevices, nooks and passes of the Ridge, as well as some of the fumaroles. Others fled to the shores, and deep of South America.
VT ANG was sending up sorties the week prior looking for activity as Boats were mousing up and down the coast.
Chutzpah lads
Same thing as US F35s flying over Syria and Lebanon😂
Just what I been praying about 😅
Is it possible that the acoustic tiles on this sub were removed on purpose so as to give the US an inaccurate acoustic signature since the Ruskies knew it was being tracked?
LAME!. Why do you show a US Submarine while talking about a Russian one?
US already knew, but it's not so easy to detect.
Funny how these little russian naval excursions are always shepherded by an ocean going tug.
The sub they're showing at about 2:15 is an American sub.😮
What makes you think that the Russians did not come to prob US best Subs and record their signature?
What is actually known will never be published. Everything else on here is speculation.
Do we KNOW the missile flys at Mach 9? I highly doubt it!
