Giving the Long Bin a Wedgie! Plus a Sift and Feed Too.

  • Hello!
I set up a long bin in the wedge system a week ago. Here’s the link to that video:
Small Sift of Grow Out Bin Plus Starting a Wedge Method of Bon Management
    • Small Sift of Grow Out...
I’m starting today’s bin management by sorting out castings from the dry down end of the bin. Once completed, I aerate and move the worms and bedding into the now empty space. Look at those worms! ❤️🪱😊
Once that’s completed its time to add new fresh bedding, which is a 50/50 mix of my indoor table top pre-compost and sifted cow manure. Here’s s the link to how to make the pre-compost:
    Indoor Table Top Pre-Composting Bin
    • Indoor Table Top Pre-C...
Now I add in vegetable matter, some amendments and I’m all done for at least another week 👍.
Are you using a wedge method? Do you like it? What challenges are there? Please share!
    Thanks for watching!
    Yours in the dirt,
    Jayne

I think originally, the wedge system was a wind row, starting with a pile of bedding and food, leaving a 45-degree angle at the end. Then, let the worms work that material down to castings. At this point, add more bedding and food at the end with the angle. I'm remembering this from somewhere I may be off with my thinking or remembering.

Hi again ❤️. Someone else posted essentially the same as you just did - that it started with windrow management.
What’s the function of the 45 degree angle? Maybe to indicate the direction of movement? When I get a few free minutes (hahaha I crack myself up!) I want to research it a bit more.

Hi Lisa! I’m subscribed to Ann’s channel too! I like her info as well ❤️. I’m modeling my long bin after how she does her blue bin. I’ve even asked her questions about it 😆👍❤️.

Although I don’t have the room for this system I still get a lot of info from watching you.
Ooooo by the way Jane, I’m a ‘worm mama’ 👏👏👏 My little shoebox cocoon bin is thriving ❤❤

Oh excellent Linda!! Congratulations 🎊🎉. Very exciting! Thanks for sharing that 👍
I got a new (to me - facebook marketplace score again!) bigger shelf unit so the long bin fits easily without cocking it and kind of wedging it in. Ha see what I did there 🙄.
I’m liking the whole longer/bigger bin thing a lot. Moving the bin… not so much. If I stick with this bin (and set up its twin) I may have to totally rearrange the shelving units so these long bins are easier to access and move to and from the work table. And what I mean by me having to do it is having hubby do it. Haha! But he’s been talking about moving the corner armoire out so I have more shelving unit space (his idea, not mine!) and we could move all the shelf units at the same time. And it’d be on him! Wife wins again! Ooops. He reads these comments. Drats. ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Peggy! Thanks for the awesome compliment! ❤️🪱
I didn’t know they changed the qualifications a few days ago - thanks for the heads up on that! I just read a bit on it and it’s not for the Adsense part- that apparently has stayed the same - but I can use the new rule to kinda pre-qualify for the ad sharing revenue part, which would be helpful! Thanks again!

I also sift for the cocoons. I use wood chips for composting I normally sift the compost before feeding my worms but sometimes I just grab a fork and chuck it in my bin. So u definitely use a quarter inch screen to get the big chunks out then taper down to get the cocoons. Love your videos, thanks for posting

Hi Rick! How are you finding the sifting for the cocoons going? I’d very much like to discover a better way to separate out cocoons faster/more efficiently!!

Hi Sandra! Thanks! The worms are looking good 👍
Indoor temps are my house temps. 77 degrees during the day and 85 degrees at night (we use a window unit to cool the bedroom at night to save on electricity). As for humidity I’m less sure but when I turn the dehumidifier on it circles around 55% before it even kicks on so I’d say around that humidity level is ‘normal’. ❤️🪱❤️

Hi Tolga! I like it too except it’s a bit hard for me to man handle. I’m thinking of rearranging the shelves so it’s easier for me.
It’s a sterilite brand underbed tote from Walmart…. A long time ago. But I’m sure they or target or similar store will sell something very similar. I give the exact measurements in a response on this very thread so you can look at it if you want 👍

@@LarryWileyWormFarm-ey8lp Mortar trays are a very good option to use as worm bins! I think Captain Matt uses them in his rack system. Vee may use them as well. I think they’re pricier than the Sterilite bins but also a firmer plastic. 🪱🪱❤️
