it's refreshing to hear someone who genuinely appreciates Hip-hop/rap. there is just SO MUCH bad rap and for many, it's cool not to be able to rap that well.
The fact that a lot of my peers that are in my age group don't bother to pay attention and listen to a smart cat like DJ Clark Kent is disrespectful because I actually learn things about this game we call "hip-hop/rap" from guys like him. Thanks for the knowledge 🙏🏾.
I remember DJ Clark Kent from back in the day in New York City. I was in the record store & there he was, mind you, he was already legendary and not just for rap! I remember Kent for all the new House tracks! I saw him djing in the club MARS! Anyway, I humbly asked him what House track I should go with & he told me and he was SO right!!! The brother was so aproachable. I mean we were up in there chatting like we knew each other! Mad respect for this brother!!!
DJ Clark Kent told the greatest story of Mad Skillz saying he was the greatest MC, he is like you Nice, but my boy Jay is going to be the GOAT. He knew way back then.
I saw Clark play in Atlanta at Club "Plastics" in 1991 and literally lay the blueprint for modern DJing. He has some "interesting" ideas, but he is definitely official.
great interview, i remember kent from wetlands club in the early '90's, and wish (looking back) that my boys had signed w/ him than who they did; and it's true the voice itself is an instrument...
great interview..love how laura and scottie beam caught clark out there contradicting his own logic with how he would call out rappers that can't spit, but how he won't confront djs that do pre mixes and are overall bad djs that are messing up the game… .great interview from ebro and everyone…
He wasnt contradicting himself. The other DJ is his competition so why would he help his competition be better. As DJs and radio personalities their job is to literally to listen to and play music therefore making their critic of the actual music more relevant.
what is this? he did not /did too time? what- you trolling? I would not expect you to understand the contradiction -nor my explanation of why he contradicted himself..the only thing you succeeded in is getting a reply from me. Congratulations!
Prime example why the industry is over saturated. Everybody wanna DJ & Emcee but are not actually qualified to do so!!!!!! Operation take back hip hop.... Salute DJ Clark Kent for keeping it original
I really appreciate Clark Kent explaining how important the rapper's voice is. If you don't sound good on a beat, no one's gonna listen to you no matter how lyrical you say you are.
J Blue LOL idk im a 90s fiend so i cant do it haha so when I'm wearing concords my outfits needs to be like 1995 and i only bump music that day from that year really LOL If its a EARLY 90s mood? For example i might I throw on my braves starter pinstripe with some olympic 7s and play 1992 albums all day haha yeah I'm that crazy haha
Glad you felt you should share.. But the joke wasn't about the name of the shoe.. It was a joke about a show called The Get Down.. You should watch it on Netflix.. But thanks for the info..... I guess...
you also got to understand as a mc you grow a taste to types of beats thats once you hear it makes you want to rap. As a mc dont give me a trap beat hit me with jdilla, etc
I feel like the reason kids today don't get this whole "real hip hop" argument is because the definition of what fun and culture meant from the 2000s onwards has changed. The stuff older people talk about (generally) just sounds boring to young ears. At the same time, sure there's young people who are in tune with traditional hip hop culture and mores the same way we have that one cousin who is actually interested in grandpa's origins and stories about where the family came from. Overall I just think you can never bridge two generations. Both will always clash until one dies out and then the cycle repeats (for hip hop and numerous other cultures)
Dude hip hop came from appropriating old disco and soul records, isn't that biting too? They pretty much illegally used other people's materials to make music rather than make it from scratch. So you pretty much sound like the disco and soul heads that saw hip hop in its early stages...which alludes to what I mentioned, it's all just a cycle and nothing's really going to come of all this fighting
***** And when the Beatles and Roling Stones, and ESPECIALLY Led Zeppelin came out, they were appropriating american delta blues music to a ridiculous extent and turning it into garage music. The riffs of blues, minus the heritage, as well as struggle and hand-to-mouth hardship black blues musicians faced in the South. And now what are those groups viewed as? The greatest bands of all time. Can you imagine how white boys in England copying, and sometimes outright STEALING, black southern music would've fared in the Twitter era?
***** ok what i meant was excelling through the trends and fads. G rap may be a legend and well respected and still a cited source but could he sell and make his own lane in today's hip-hop?
It's our responsibility to introduce the young generation to real hip hop. My son & I play a game where he picks a rap song from his era and I pick a rap song from my era. I'm picking Nas, Biggie and he's picking Ty Dollar Sign, Wale, etc they're getting crushed. Now he's picking artist like J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Common etc. Sometimes you don't know what bad lyrics are, until you hear great lyrics.
The culture must be preserved integrity must remain intact we have to respect what our people ( black people) has created or else we will have nothing . Peace to the OG's and the young heads
+vmm12 how was PAC a hater?he didn't say shit about dmx.x admitted he just dissed PAC to get more exposure.PAC was more successful than all the rappers he dissed.
I'm a young DJ but I learned the history behind the art of the DJ. I use a controller but only because I can't afford turntables and a mixer right now. The controller isn't controlling you. You can use a controller just like your using turntables. You may not get the best feel out of it but it is possible. I hate when veteran DJs hate on young guys. We didn't grow up win turntables and it ain't our fault. If DVS wasn't around, turntables wouldn't even be relevant in this day and age.
Keep on doing what yo do! -I'm glad that you have done your research and take the craft seriously. I got introduced into Dj'ing with my friends who had turntables. When I got back into it many years later, the controllers (and CDJ's for pro's) are the king of the scene for most DJ's now. I agree with you about the DVS statement, it is allowing turntables to have and extended life. -but for me, I'm strictly a controller user, I use the Pioneer DDJ-RX for my gigs, but would like to pick up some tables just to have if I get some extra spending money. The same discussions went on in the production world years ago as well, those of us who started making beats and recording on physical drum machines, keyboards, and Rack dynamics equipment learned music theory and proper recording techniques-we did fell jaded by how technology opened up the music business to people who were less talented and less dedicated to their craft. -I admit, I was on of these producers, it just felt like computers made every one think they could make music1 -add in the internet and social media presence...then BOOM, you have the lower quality of music product we have today! So don't get mad at older dj's but just understand where they are coming from, I know you see the bigger picture. -good luck with your DJ'ing plans!
No prob-I had to go back and make another post after I listened to Clark again, he was pretty angry with today's dj's. -it's at the top of the page under my regular name Gregory J. Mansfield...I had to stick up for us 'Controller DJ's" Peace!
clark kent , large professor, q tip, mc lyte, DOC , rico wade , j prince, jazzy jeff they are the real life ambassadors in this hiphop game . to me they are more important than krs 1 these days.
Man I think Ebros talents are stronger behind the scenes man. I get the points he's trying to make and I'm around dudes age but some shit you gotta just let ride. Most of his interviews have a weird vibe. You can tell by his co hosts body language all the the time. It's like they want to keep apologizing for dude but they're riding cause they're on the same team.
He has A.D.D and O.C.D. He always tend to stand even while mixing or interviewing. He just needs to do something and be active. He also gets bored easily. IF you go to his IG, he's uploading like 2-4 photos an hour lol. It's just him
I can't do a thing but now down . This interview is the blood, flesh, and none of the rap game. The youth needs to learn the word," STANDARDS". There's nothing wrong with having them, or striving for perfection. Rap is the music of a culture or the language of hip hop.
+Kevindoh G really? I live by the theory that all things being equal the shortest way from a to b is a straight line. So you're buggin if you think that's what I mean. Do the math it's too few in the modern game that have this type of work ethic and craft work.
+vmm12 you sound like you've never read the theory of Occum's Razor. I don't ramble at all. As Dj Clark Kent just said ..." It's never ok to be stupid for a good reason."
Wait wait wait...I'm so confused right now. The story has always been that Jay Z started not writing down his rhymes because he saw BIG do that. But he just told it the other way around...
The story in Decoded (from Jay's perspective) is he got tired of scrambling for a surface to write on when he was hustling so he started writing in his head
naw jay z said he taught himself how to mesmerize raps in his head before he met big I forgot what documentary it was but he said he would say raps on train and have it remembered by the time he was home
in the decoded book he describe it as always thinking of rhymes and struggling to have it written down. he started reciting his rhymes and tweaking them which made it memorable
I thought New Balance were the first $100 sneakers. Matter fact I think Clark maybe wrong as it was in or around 82 when I beleive the 990 OG came out for a $100.
Clark is a legend no doubt. But damn...let's not act like Jay wasn't Big's little homie. Jay looked up to Big and Big was the illest rapper in the mid 90s cut it out. And you're not fresh you dress like a 16yr old Clark haha. Lol no hate.
Clark the king of hyping his own shit up. Dude never outdid the greats when he was on an album with them. Premier, Ski and even Irv had better beats on this album than him. He has a great ear for talent though. I'll give him that. Best beats he ever did was Fugee's Ready Or Not Remix and Realms Of Junior M.A.F.I.A.
I’m so confused. Jay z layed the entire song...then Biggs came up then Jay “listened to the beat for 20 mins “ THEN layed the song ? Lol I thought he Awready laid it before big came up lol Saulgood
Rap is something you do. Hip-Hop is what you are. (Class of 88) Blessed I was where and when.
it's refreshing to hear someone who genuinely appreciates Hip-hop/rap. there is just SO MUCH bad rap and for many, it's cool not to be able to rap that well.
I love this interview, the beginning of hip hop is important and his perspective is valued. Thank you for this interview Hot 97 and Ebro.
The fact that a lot of my peers that are in my age group don't bother to pay attention and listen to a smart cat like DJ Clark Kent is disrespectful because I actually learn things about this game we call "hip-hop/rap" from guys like him. Thanks for the knowledge 🙏🏾.

great interview..love how laura and scottie beam caught clark out there contradicting his own logic with how he would call out rappers that can't spit, but how he won't confront djs that do pre mixes and are overall bad djs that are messing up the game… .great interview from ebro and everyone…

Exactly my point! You hit the nail on the head my friend!

I've heard diff stories about Brooklyn's finest but I'm inclined to believe Clark
The Only man who hear the Jay z 2pac diss record....
Yeah I heard it was a "scathing " diss too. I think he described it like that on Combat Jack I think.
+vmm12 how was PAC a hater?he didn't say shit about dmx.x admitted he just dissed PAC to get more exposure.PAC was more successful than all the rappers he dissed.

Is it me or is Clarke Kent low key schooling Ebro in this interview??!!
I think a lot of people got schooled from this interview
clark kent , large professor, q tip, mc lyte, DOC , rico wade , j prince, jazzy jeff they are the real life ambassadors in this hiphop game . to me they are more important than krs 1 these days.
Yup, and it was because Ebro was playin him close with some of his questions like Clark Kent was one these "Young - Lil's" new to the game!

Wait wait wait...I'm so confused right now. The story has always been that Jay Z started not writing down his rhymes because he saw BIG do that. But he just told it the other way around...
Where have you been? or who have you been listening to? Are you one of those Jay hater's that believe every negative story about him in the past?
Kingpin Status hahaha what??
The story in Decoded (from Jay's perspective) is he got tired of scrambling for a surface to write on when he was hustling so he started writing in his head
naw jay z said he taught himself how to mesmerize raps in his head before he met big I forgot what documentary it was but he said he would say raps on train and have it remembered by the time he was home
in the decoded book he describe it as always thinking of rhymes and struggling to have it written down. he started reciting his rhymes and tweaking them which made it memorable
So there is a version of Jay z Solo on Brooklyn Finest !
Who has Ebro kicked out of the studio? And btw Clark Kent is almost 50 years old the man looks like he's 28
ya i wonder who too ..hmm
E-BRO should sell a DVD of the interviews where he kicks people out.
mad history
I thought New Balance were the first $100 sneakers. Matter fact I think Clark maybe wrong as it was in or around 82 when I beleive the 990 OG came out for a $100.

Facts!
I thought Jay & BIG met in high school...
Clark is a legend no doubt. But damn...let's not act like Jay wasn't Big's little homie. Jay looked up to Big and Big was the illest rapper in the mid 90s cut it out. And you're not fresh you dress like a 16yr old Clark haha. Lol no hate.
Jay looked up to Jaz-O. Yea Big was his boy and they knew each other for a while even in high school.
Big knew who Jay was as a hustler before rap.
+vmm12 it's a Mitchell and ness jersey, any 16 with 200 dollars in their piggy bank can get it
+vmm12 Yep
+vmm12 I get that but I mean as far as music, Jay slowed his flow down I believe after he saw/heard what Big was doing.
Y'all need to get DJ Ted Smooth up there!
where the jay z story start at, help me out
20 MINS IN BUDDY

Clark the king of hyping his own shit up. Dude never outdid the greats when he was on an album with them. Premier, Ski and even Irv had better beats on this album than him. He has a great ear for talent though. I'll give him that. Best beats he ever did was Fugee's Ready Or Not Remix and Realms Of Junior M.A.F.I.A.
Another interview he said it took big 2 weeks.
I’m so confused. Jay z layed the entire song...then Biggs came up then Jay “listened to the beat for 20 mins “ THEN layed the song ? Lol I thought he Awready laid it before big came up lol Saulgood
To keep u from being confused....he changed his verses
