@Panzer Brecher You're not very articulated, right? Is that why you go over the internet, insulting complete strangers for their musical opinions, and being expletive about famous rock groups?

@Panzer Brecher That's pretty sad to hear, man, hope you get over it someday. But if you pay attention to the keyboard, and the accompanying guitar, you'll begin to find The Doors sound pretty clearly

@@cbennett196631 You may be right but that doesn't mean it doesn't apply here. All most people know from Shocking Blue is "Venus," which is a great song but they have any number that of songs that are equally good and arguably better. This was a great band, far more deserving of the "one-hit wonder" label with which they've stuck in the U.S.

@@edhydra4995 Mariska was also partially Russian 😁 Her mother was half-Russian. As a fun fact, maybe for the reason of her heritage, maybe for something else, but Shocking Blue's "Venus" was a virus song in the 70-80s in the USSR. People called it "Shizgara" for the misheard "she's got it" lyrics.

Then there elpee At Home came out and I bought it for 12.95 Dutch guilders. When I first heard Venus on the radio I felt disappointed. Venus had a much clearer sound and I thought it had been influenced by Get Back and The Ballad of John and Yoko of The Beatles. More country.

In the sky a fallin' star
Tellin' myself I don't go too far
And trust by the sound of the rain
Well I wonder, well I wonder where I am
'Cos there's a long and lonesome road
That will find our world of you & me babe
There's a long and lonesome road
That will find our world like it used to be babe
Somebody there to show me the way
    Yes, I'm willin' to pay
And this dear old man can tell me any day
    Know what happens to me
Well I wonder, well I wonder where I am

This song could have easily launched the band's career internationally, but for some reason it didn't. Of course Venus did and started out what Robbie van Leeuwen wanted in the first place: international fame.
When he finally got, it almost killed him..
    The tragedy of it.
Robbie left his old band, which was quite successful in Holland, but not abroad. He needed something else for that and started a new band. His manager proposed an female singer. The other male band members weren't that keen on accepting a female singer. There weren't that many successful bands around with a female lead singer.
Mariska on the other hand was very happy in her own band and very reluctant to change as well. So both were not very keen on hooking up together,
The manager decided to bring them together and when Mariska entered the room, she knocked the guys off their feet, with her appearance and voice.
It is easy to understand why...
    Well, the rest is history.

Somehow they were convinced they had to put out 2 or 3 full albums a year and tour almost all the time and Robbie could not work that fast and the quality of the music (and the band member's lives) suffered. But when they were good, there was nobody better. The Shocking Blue recorded one song with a male lead singer ("Lucy Brown is Back in Town") before their manager saw Mariska in a concert and decided to introduce them. It's strange that Venus did so much better in the USA than did several other, better songs they put out that year.

@@paulperkins1615 All follow ups weren't better. Next single after Venus was Mighty Joe. A good one, but not as good as Venus. Same for the other follow ups, like Never marry a railroad man and Hello darkness.
