Checking out the latest steam release from Kato, the UP Big Boy #4014. After seeing the real deal a few times, figured it was time to finally own one! This engine is awesome, runs like a watch and is great value for the pricepoint. Naturally this layout is a bit sketchy, and survived it well for the most part...To see some of that footage, wait until the end!

I was a bit hesitant on if I wanted to get one of these. But the fact that the drivers go in and out of sync is what officially sold me on the model. Wonderful review!

It's a really cool engine, I didn't make the connection until I started doing test runs.

I love my kato big boy. I have the 2 water tenders and a UP super dome. I need to get the UP excursion set. I was able to get an XL rerailer that is large enough to hold and support the big boy

The big boy 4014 traversed across my home state of Nebraska this week for display at the College World Series in Omaha! What a site!

Hehe... love the honest assessment of the track work. I have mine running with dz123 decoder until my sound decoder arrives. It's a marvelous locomotive. My kato greyhound is my most picky loco for finding my dodgy track work. If it can make it around my layout with no derailments all other locos, including the big boy, get along just fine.

If it was up to me, all curves on that layout would be yanked up for Unitrack, straightaways managed alright. Thanks for watching!

@@SCL3618 my layout is all unitrack. It's does pretty well. With the greyhound I have to make sure the track is dead level left to right rail. I did however, very slightly raise the outside rail on some curves and it seems to help with that pesky pilot truck immensely.

Good Video with a good unboxing but I'm a bit Skeptic on putting any money near one with one Kato Big Boy's side Rails that we're unattached in the Box to to seeing a Big Boy in bits n' pieces on a Face Book page that Big Boy came from Power Hobbies I think it was, & after a Great unboxing it looked like the Engine wasn't missing anything or anything hadn't came a loose I did see watching closely the Engine not doing to Well on a few turnouts & Areas I don't if it was uneaven track or the Engines wheels was possibly out a Gauge i for sure check ✔ & see if all the Wheels are in Gauge the Front pilot Wheels & Rear Pilot wheels are the Rock stars to keep a Steam Engine Running True & negotiate sudden changes & if they're not up to the task you can have really bad results & it looked as if the Engine was heading for a Derailment but somehow maybe by its weight surrounding the Engine kept it glued to the Track, On my Athearn 4018 its got metal pilot wheel with a Spring that holds it to the Rails Each Engine is made of Metal Casting but the driving mechanism is what made the latest Round of Athearn Big Boys Run Well I'm not trying to knock down the Kato's I just hope we don't see anymore with parts falling off or in this one case A guys new Engine not even Out of the Box in pieces
And if I was gonna pull other Freight or Passenger Cars other than Kato I'd try & put a Microtrains 1016 Medium Coupler on the Tender the passenger cars wasn't fairing to well as they being pulled..
I've also had that problem as well especially on Radius's 11' or smaller..

Nothing was loose out of the box thankfully, this layout is honestly very rough for testing- I can't even run a Kato SD40-2 on it, much less any stack cars because of the track dips and poor curve laying. My Japanese stock which exceeds on tighter turns runs badly here. But it's miles better than me setting up an oval of unitrack in the living room to let it do circles. Kato really did a nice job on this engine, it doesn't feel cheap in build/running quality like the Athearn stuff I've seen and checked out. Thanks for watching!

Rivarossi can go around 9.75" curves! 11" isn't a big deal.

Whenever Broadway eventually releases the stealth series Big Boy, it'll be great to dilute the market and provide a cheaper way to get one.
