I was a Detective with a city police department. We carried the S&W Chief Special. Works well under a suit jacket and doesn’t destroy the lining. Most shootings take place within 4 to 6 feet. Therefore we practiced “combat” shooting. You simply clear leather and start shooting from the hip. You are correct, if you work/live where you’re in a crowd this is a fine weapon, if you gotta take time to aim it, you’re likely to be dead before you pull the trigger. With a 5 or 6 shot wheel gun, you need to be exceptionally accurate, reloading isn’t easy! I use hollow point silver rounds. My second job was a fraud investigator for a bank. These rounds hit hard and come apart inside! And the great thing is I don’t have to worry about my background! Yes, he does run funny!

I’m 220lbs and pretty fit and strong and I shoot a smith and Wesson 340pd .357 which is a light weight stubby like in the video and 6-7 of my buddies (all police officers) all carry the same gun off duty and everyone of them will say the same thing, these guns suck to shoot! They bite you every time. We shoot every weekend and the 340 pd sucks with .38 ammo and hot . 357 is just a nightmare. They are louder than all of my other guns too. They put my Ak to Shame when it comes to rupturing the ear drum. So the grip doesn’t matter as much as you say. Most men who know their way around guns have a decent enough grip and it won’t make a damn difference that gun will still suck to shoot and is an unpleasant experience.

Most cops-then and now-are decent, honest people trying to make things right. To me that essentially means protecting those too weak to protect themselves.
Don’t go into the job thinking it’s going to be mostly Starsky and Hutch car chases and shootouts. The most accurate description I’ve ever heard is that it’s hours of tedium with moments of terror interspersed.
What I recall most fondly are the times I knew that people were legitimately happy to see me, whether it was helping a lost motorist or just patrolling a dark subway platform at night. Little things like that stay in your memory, more so than the sporadic high-speed chases and violent street confrontations.
Just don’t try to be your own private version of Jack Reacher. I've been around one or two guys like that, and I was always glad to be away from them. You’ll get to know kind soon enough. (They are seldom in a good mood!)

The best thing about a concealed hammer snubbie is that you can keep it in your jacket pocket, and you can fire right through your jacket for self defense if needed. Once you display a weapon, you have an incident. Being able to defend yourself without displaying a weapon is a big plus.

Also, picture this scenario. You're walking down the sidewalk and approaching you from the other direction are a couple of low-lifes. You are not in a position to go to the other side of the street. Their intent to do you bodily harm might not be apparent until the last second. Having your snubbie in your jacket pocket, aimed at the bad guys, with your finger on the trigger, ready to fire is much better than having to reach for a concealed weapon. By the time the attack starts, it may be too late for that. (And that's what the bad guys are counting on.) If the use of deadly force becomes immediately necessary, you are able to react much faster. And if the attack doesn't happen, the potential bad guys never knew you had a weapon pointed at them.

The advantages are, you are much less likely to have an accidental discharge in a stressful situation because a cocked revolver has a hair trigger that requires very little pressure on the trigger to fire. Secondly lint and dirt can't get into the inner workings of the firearm. Now a double action only (DAO) revolver will require more practice to become efficient with. For concealed carry however, most knowledgeable people choose this double action only type of revolver.

I've been reading a lot of comments about snubbies being a "belly gun" or "card table distance" or a "get off me" gun.
Well, Massad Ayoob (well known and well experienced), once testified in court that he would consider someone armed with a snubbie to be a lethal threat within 150 yards. When questioned about this, he replied "because I'm a lethal threat within that distance." When the prosecution didn't want to accept that testimony, he went and proved it.
Long story short, while it's true that most of us are limited in how far we can accurately use a snubbie, it is capable of much much more in practiced hands.

    • @unclebob4964

Ayoob is quite a “ legend”……at least in his mind.
He certainly has a following and interesting credentials. I just would love to see a legitimate resume.
He talks like his 20 or so years as a police officer, retiring as a Captain, was out of a precinct in L A.
      Not quite…..
I believe he was a reserve in a 5 man department. With that as the apparent foundation, I’d love to hear the “ rest of the story”
I’ve suggested he post a resume, but get zero response.
He’s convinced a lot of credible folks of his expertise.

I have never seen anyone cut their hand on a snub nose
firing 38 special ammo. This has more to do with your
choice of grips and ammo. Replace the grips with the
"pachmayr SJ-C"; and, load the revolver with a low recoiling
    load of your choosing.
You have already proven that the gun is the easiest for you to
carry. By choosing a better grip and lighter recoiling ammo,
it will also be easy to shoot. Wadcutters, or similar loads,
should be easy to shoot in both the alloy and steel j-frames.

I have 8 snubbies, some in .38 and some in .357. I have never had a problem shooting them. I don't consider an airweight .357 a range toy but have no problem putting a box of ammo through it. I can and have regularly put a couple boxes of .38 +P through my 642 which is a constant companion the last 4 years. It is more accurate at distance than most people can shoot. I've put over 4000 rounds through it and the trigger is smooth and easily staged if you want to. Snubs are NOT beginners guns or ideal for women as many recommend. They take more practice than many are willing to do. They will get the job done if you do yours. They are the easiest to carry as well. It's not the only gun I carry, but it is the only gun I always carry.

Easy to carry and simple to use= best for emergency, adrenaline pumping moments. Marines taught me bleed in training so you don't bleed in combat. Most defensive shootings are less than 3 rounds fired anyway so you won't bleed the way you did because not a lot of rounds will be fired. A custom grip specific to your hand/grip helps too.

This has happened to me and also to someone I was with at a range who was using a Ladysmith 38. It is a simple fix. Your grip is too high on the butt. Gripping the butt about 1/2 to 3/4 inch lower will fix the problem. This fix will actually produce more felt recoil, since the energy release is higher in relation to your hand, but it will fix the problem of the biting.

    • @brianwilson4861
      @brianwilson4861 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

You grip the gun to hit the target not to avoid pain or cuts. If you have grips that are standard size, you cant grip it any lower. You only can get two fingers on the grip as it is. I shoot only full power 357 magnum ammo through mine. You're going to bleed if you shoot it too many times. I mean you could wear a glove I suppose. Or just stop shooting it before it makes you bleed. I can't believe that a j frame in 38 special could cause anyone pain or their hand to bleed. The only way you could even grip it 1/2 inch lower is if you had those ridiculous over sized grips on it. You want to grip it high so that it kicks straight back as opposed to flipping up. So you can keep it on target for faster follow up shots. That's the advantage of the 640 over the other j frames.

I used to get a blister on the web of my thumb and forefinger shooting my K6S, I learned to grip it differently (lower and lighter grip which I was worried I would lose control or have the gun decide it was time for flying lessons) which eliminated the blistering issue. Didn't lose any control, I found that gripping tightly worsened the problem but I am still learning and discovering the best way to shoot my revolver. As for reloading I carry and use the 5-Star speedloaders in a split six pouch. I practice reloading that gun regularly, it's getting faster and more natural. The real issue I have is not getting all spent shells to eject and needing to waste time looking down to pull them out.

This was a great video! I think for newbies it’s a very important message. BUT I must share that in my humble opinion, these “snubbiies” are NOT made for target shooting or running drills, they are a self defense weapon that is used to blow your perpetrator away! That said, I’m not concerned about distance accuracy OR getting a little boo boo on my hand because of the recoil. I’m concerned with stopping an attacker in a self defense situation, AND ladies and gentlemen (as I’m certain our host will agree) this little “snubbie” WILL get that job done.

If you are worried about a nick on your hand or something like that its probably not for you.

  • @ol-Sarge

The problem with hand-web injury can be virtually eliminated if you went with the older Modal 36/60 J frame revolvers which have a different frame cut. You could either replace or Bob the hammer if you wanted a DAO option. Also you could change ammo. Since most all HP ammo doesn’t expand in a snub nose, you could consider using the softer firing 148 grain LWC round. Also Remington make a 110 grain std load SJHP round which I have found reasonable in terms of recoil.

I have semi autos, which I love but I also love the simplicity and reliability of revolvers and I was not going to give up on them. I bought a Taurus 605 will a 3 inch barrel and I love it. @williamzeller294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

Ankle holsters are poor for a primary carry but have several important advantages.
As a backup gun carrier, they are especially good since they don't add to the load on the belt.
If you are in a situation where you are on the ground, they are not at all inconvenient. In fact, they can very possibly be more accessible and usable than a belt holster. Clint Smith has a video on that. Also, long ago I saw a dashcam video of a trooper who lost control of his primary gun and when knocked down by the bad guy, managed to get to his ankle gun and save his life. Sorry, don't recall where the video is.
Thirdly, in some seated situations it could be faster and more accessible than the belt gun. For many years I had small sports cars, Miatas. The only kinds of holsters that could produce a gun while driving such a small car were the shoulder and ankle. In that tight, recumbent seated position, the ankle holster was the only practical one for year-round use.
A top quality ankle holster like the Galco Ankle Glove works very well for certain things.

The Ruger SP101 (standard 2 inch barrel 357mag) weighs 26oz and is my woods gun. It shoots .38spl (including +P) with zero issues. The extra weight helps a ton with recoil sensitivity. But you’ll need to carry on your waist or under your shoulder. I also have a Taurus 85 ultra lite that I enjoy as well. It also handles .38spl fairly well even though its half the weight of the SP101. The reason for this is how soft and well made the grips are. S&W make great revolvers but in my opinion they aren’t as comfortable at the range. If you ever have to draw in self defense, comfort will be the absolute bottom of your worry list.

  • @carlos06291960
    @carlos06291960 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I have never had the issues you have had, normally I shoot 25 to 50 rds standard velocity .38 rounds. They have a wee more kick than a full sized heavier revolver, but its very manageble. It does require more skill since this is more of a point and shoot than a gun you would aim carefully. This is for me a 12 FT/ 4 M handgun, and that is where I do the bulk of my practice with my own 642..
And yes, this type of revolver is far more carried than shot! I have seen several snubbies like this that are decades old, and many appeared unfired or very little fired.

  • @craigbenz4835

I can see your point. I have a model 36 with oversized Hogue wood grips that let me get three fingers on it. Even with ordinary 38 Special ammo it is painful to shoot. Shooting my model 66 with 357 ammo has a lot more bang and flash, but is more comfortable and doesn't hurt.

My Smith and Wesson 38 snubbies are my favorite carry guns. I got the 642 first, and later added the 38 Bodyguard. I prefer 38s over semiautomatics, maybe because that's what I learned with, and carried during USAF training. I like the spurless DAO for pocket holster carry, no hammer to catch on your pocket.

I grew up in the revolver era, my choices were 1911 or revolver, and I know why you find the revolver uncomfortable.
You try to shoot it like a semi.
I carry a charter 44 bulldog pug, I find it pleasant to shoot, if you quit putting a semi auto death grip on it and limp wrist it like you should on a revolver, you will gain major accuracy, far less recoil, and you won't cut your hand. I can reload my revolver on a galloping horse, I think you could train to use a speed loader on the run. Don't feel bad, I had to relearn shooting when autos became a thing, but I still prefer a revolver all day, every day, they use far more powerful cartridges and how many 44 spec rounds does it take to put down Tarzan on pcp?

Thanks. I think you've got a point there. Semi-auto shooters are taught to "dominate" the pistol and have zero muzzle flip, whereas shooting a revolver should probably be more of a fluid motion with a gentle rise and fall of the barrel. I'm no expert but this makes sense to me. I will try it next time I'm at the range.

    • @anthonygalliart1789
      @anthonygalliart1789 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

My way of thinking is since the average shooting takes place at 9 feet and ends in 1-3 rounds being fired the odds of even needing to reload are very low. Since packing a firearm is based on comfort then go ahead and cut your hand as I can guarantee you won't even know it happened in that life and death situation. Stick with standard velocity .38 Special in the 158 GR weight and don't waste your time on super expensive fancy hollow point wonder rounds. Shoot a lot, shoot often and carry the same ammo you practice with. Stay away from super lite weapons and stick with all steel. The best holster pistol combo I have come across is a 6 shot steel snub nosed .38 2" with single & double action capability in a skeleton holster with a thumb snap. A speed loader in your right & left front pockets of coat or jacket plus two speed strips in your left front or rear pants pocket. Carried Colt DS and Cobra this way for years very comfortable and you have enough extra rounds for that unexpected barricade situation. Also should you have to lay your pistol over some nut jobs skull it is possible to bend an aluminum trigger guard. That's my .2¢ worth.

Recently I was teaching a 15 year old kid to shoot for the first time, after shooting a glock 19 he wanted to shoot my 640 pro that I was chronographing with some of the most powerful loads from underwood and buffalo bore most producing close to 600 fpe out of its short 2 1/2 barrel. I worried he wouldn't be able to handle it especially with the g10 grips I thined out to be paper thin. But he proved me wrong firing multiple cylinders full without a single complaint. If you want to reload on the move you should look into moon clips. They may fit your revolver or you might have to get some light machining done on the cylinder. Guys in competition use moon clips for super fast reloading.
Think of a speed loader without the twist knob and the bulkey rim. You just drop the entire thing in and your back in the game.

I have a 360 PD .357. The rubber part of the grip does exactly what you described that should be the case with the 442. That is, the rubber on the grip rounds of the corners preventing the worst of that interaction with the thumb web. It's still a bear to shoot. But, not quite as bad as your experience with the 442.

If you are going to use a semiautomatic as your primary carry weapon, I suggest that you get a micro one for your backup.

It’s definitely his grip or his skin is just super dry in the cold weather causing it to crack easier. I have shot plenty of snubbies and they can hurt but never do they make me bleed. Though I have had a few semi autos bite me to the point of bleeding.
