This interview motivated me to give Vivaldi a try. Two notes:
    1) I really like being able to tile my tabs and have multiple tabs visible at once.
    2) I really like that there's a separate password for encrypting your content for syncing, and that the user is involved in that process. It gives me more peace of mind about the security of my data on Vivaldi's servers.

Henry and Jon, thank you for this!
I have mostly been a Firefox user, for decades. But when I found Vivaldi, I really liked it. Vivaldi has all of the features I want, along with respect for user security and privacy. Other browsers really bug me with their telemetry. No problems with Vivaldi.

I was using Vivaldi as main browser, for at least last 5 years, user experience is definitely the best, it's a little blotted, but you can hide UI elements that you don't use. In last couple of weeks, I was testing Brave as main browser but my experience was clunky.
I really appreciate this interview, because Jón managed to address my main concerns I had with Vivaldi.
Henry thanks for your work, and Jón thanks for your dedication and great product.

I used Vivaldi a lot like 5 years ago. I was amazed by the sheer amount of customization. But I had low spec PCs back then and it was just too heavy for a proper use so I switched to Brave. Will maybe reconsider using Vivaldi now that I have a giga powerful machine

I tried Vivaldi some time ago, but moved to Opera as it seemed more useful then. However, I have been becoming more and more disenchanted with Opera and was not aware of the connection discussed here. This has made me want to go back and take another look at Vivaldi. Apart from anything, I liked Jon as well, his attitude and his openness. Keep it up, both of you!

Vivaldi's customization is just amazing, give it a chance and you'll love it. I'm mostly a Firefox user, but when I have to use a chromium-based browser then Vivaldi is the right choice for me. Brave doesn't offer the same level of customization at all.

People complaining about it not being open source yet majority of people who complain can't even understand how the browser code works. You can pretty much see the source code if you like and it's all there just like Jón said. But of course you'll have to rely on someone to tell you that it's safe to use because you don't understand how it works.

The problem that it's not open source is that I can't build your browser and compare the binary to ensure there is nothing bad put in. Great to debug UI, great to see the modified Chromium you use, but both without a complete package to build, thus I can't verify the honesty. The verifying of your binary is impossible.

    • @laurencefraser
      @laurencefraser ปีที่แล้ว

I've certianly enjoyed using it. Has some stupid bugs though (at least on pop!_OS). Like the right click just randomly ceasing to work within the browser until you rightclick Outside the browser, and then working again. And tiled tabs interacts Really badly with youtube (tiled a tab? untiled a tab? moved a tab to a different window? A random selection of the videos open in the tabs that are still tiled will start playing for no decernable reason. Oh, and with each change regarding which tabs are or are not part of the tiled set, all adjustments to the size and positioning of each tile will be forgotten (semiunderstandably), and it will toggle between what you set it on and 'grid' (without changing the indicator in the menu that controls such)... make another change and it will toggle back (there is no good reason for this).
Couple of things I'm not so keen on about the UI around tiling and gestures either.
That said, it's been a Massive improvement in useability over firefox, with negligable (at most) loss in any other area that actually affects my usecase.

A bit late but, I use Vivaldi now since it’s much more faster than Opera GX. I use it for months now and it’s basically my main browser for Windows and Linux (except older windowses which i use firefox on old pcs) And It’s basically very customisable with the sidebar, navigation bar, horizontal tabs, custom icons and CSS. The only thing I don’t like is that the UI is very Mac oriented. Like the Vivaldi Menu is like a mac menu for Windows just like Spotify. If there was settings where we can make the UI Windows oriented by default, it would be the go for me. Just my opinion.

Exacly, I don't see problem with telementry as long as it's non-identifiable, encrypted, not for sale data. Average user won't go and post bug reports on forum or github, so some basic telementry to improve functionality can benefit both users and developers. I don't have issue with it being turned on by default either, tho they could let you decide whether to enable or disable telementry at the first run of a browser.

i was using opera because it used its own very fast render engine and you could customize the UI extensively. Opera back then was the only browser that let me put my tabs from the top to the side and had a little button on the bottom for extensions and did resizing of webpages correctly without breaking the page.
then the opera engine was falling behind and compatibility with a lot of website kept breaking. then opera decided to switch to chromium and start from a fresh code base and all the customizations and what made opera greate were gone overnight.
it was easy for me to switch to vivaldi as it brought all does things back over time and as privacy is more important then ever i feel the saveset with vivaldi then with any other company.

Please take a look at the Arc Browser and what it does for the internet browsing experience. I can't leave it due to its features, but I want more privacy. Things like swiping between work spaces, having folders for pinned tabs, auto-archiving tabs, opening new tabs at the top, not bottom, etc. etc. The vertical tab bar should also have a customizable color based on the workspace and the option to bind workspaces to people to have separate storages. There are so many things that Arc does that I want to see for other browsers and Vivaldi is the most potent one to enable these features through its rich settings.

@@marco31 Yes, I heard that there's a bias to Brave. Vivaldi is one of a kind i would say :)
but for Jón's question why the maker of PrivacyTest is not using the tracker or advertisement blocker it is because it is not pinned by default so if i click ok continue etc to the point i can finaly use the Browser there is no security ^^ (and if i use the blocking all option i dont get it at all, the cookies from third party i still get them, https upgrade is still off)
If you have a new PC the first thing is not to make all the settings, no you want a browser where you can download things to install and at the end maybe make settings.
For me in person i dont see a big new feature what makes a difference, but i get lower selection example i cant select a blank start site, i dont have the option to select/add more ad-filter , i dont see an option to set my DNS settings without tinkering and i dont have a good option to delet my browsing history.
