- Hi friends! This week we look at how the reapings work in regards to birthdays!
Children are reaped for the Hunger Games when they are between the ages of 12 and 18 years old. That seems pretty simple, right? But what if your birthday is on the reaping day, or between the reaping and the Games? If you turn 12, or 19, on one of these days are you in or out?

I'm pretty sure that may have happened to Finnick Odair. Cos I'm pretty sure there are other Victors who won at 14 years (well, logically, 75 years of the games), however, it would make sense that it did happen to him cos Haymitch says something like:
_"He won his games at 14, youngest ever."_

It would be really great for a career to have their birthday on the 5th of July. You’d already be feared as a career, but on top of that you’d be 19, and that’s most definitely a great way to get sponsored

Well, you wouldn't get reaped while you were 11. Like she said, your eligibility for the reaping is based on the age you are at the time of the reaping.

It would work like in our society, you are the age of the amount of years you have lived, not the amount of birthdays you have had
You could have a really good argument though: ‘uh, no sorry, I’m not eligible, I think you’ll find I’m 4, not 16’
I always wondered, since it’s mandatory for everyone to attend reapings... where are the kids that aren’t eligible yet? Do they wait in the same area as the parents? I don’t remember it being mentioned in the books, nor was it shown in the movies 🤔

I was literally just thinking about this the other day! Like what happens if your birthday is on reaping day? That’s a really sucky way to celebrate your birthday.
I was just thinking about it. So in that case, for the first Reaping, the person turns 12 *on* the day of the Reaping, making them 12 for the Reaping and thus eligible. And they age out on the very next day, so their 19th birthday present would be no longer being eligible for the Games.
I think the decision to hold the reaping on July 4 was a very deliberate choice on the part of the capital to rub their loss in the war in the faces of the citizens of the districts even more. In an earlier comment at this site, I said that from dates given in Mockingjay after the roses incident, you can narrow down the date of the reaping to a period from June 28 to July 4. I'm glad that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes confirms the date.

2.) what would have happened if Katniss ran for the bow an arrows? Do u think she could have got them?

for the first one, cato had been stung by the trackerjackers which most of the time cause intense pain and allucinations so that's probably why his aim wasnt the best and he only managed to injure peeta instead of killing him
I think they could have solved the issue of Katniss running out of arrows if they had a shot of her retrieving one from an animal of even a person after she killed them.

I honestly think Katniss would've been killed had she gone for the bow n' arrows at the bloodbath. Especially since she scored the highest.
This brings up another idea. What about your birthday is on the 4th of July? Not just as a reaping concept because based on your analysis the child would be eligible from ages 12-18 as well. However, what about the mothers?
The only expectation for missing the reaping is being on death's door. Giving birth, though super dangerous and a medical procedure, it's not exactly a life or death experience.
My questions are: would the mother's be excused from missing the reaping because they are in labour/delivering a child or would they be forced to observe in the town centre with contractions? And if mothers are excused, is it all labouring mothers or just those who are actively pushing?
Or would it depend on the district? Places like District two must have a better healthcare system set up that giving birth is safer whereas districts 11 and 12 don't have anything/much. Giving birth in those districts are much more dangerous and probably lead to more deaths.
I'd love to see your take on this one!

I think Panem was still a thing before the Hunger Games as the 1st Hunger Games wasn’t the start of Panem, so there still would’ve been a Capitol and 13 Districts but we just don’t know how long it was like that for.
Oh I thought that everyone who turned 12 that year would participate in the reaping. And everyone who turned 18 that year!

It’s like voting. If you turn 18 the day after the election you are not allowed to vote even though the laws and policies the government will put in place will affect you as you will be an adult for the majority of the 4 years. I had a friend who’s birthday was three days after our election, making her a legal adult for the whole 4 year term of his presidency but her unable to vote for her to choose who to set these policies that will affect her. She was so mad about that

Suggestion for a new hunger games video:
As district 12 is very small, all children at the reaping fit easily in the space before the hall of justice. But what do bigger districts do? They must have thousands upon thousands of children per reaping, that would need an endless amount of space. And, even more interesting, how do all the children who live further away from the place of the reaping get there. Poorer families who don't have cars (actually, do district citizens even own cars?) would have to walk, but in bigger districts that could take weeks!
I hope the question was understandable😅

Can you do one on explaining why the kids had to go to school while the hunger games were going on, and why don’t they get off during the summer?
I think school breaks were based on when the busiest time of year was for the district. Rue mentioned that District 11 had their school break during harvest so everyone could work all day.

A thing I've always wondered about is that after such a catastrophic apocalypse happened to the world, how could a nation as big as panem rise from the ashes? Isn't it more plausible that each district was a city state before and then they joined together, but something happened that made the country go under the rule of the capitol? It's a weird theory, but in ancient Rome there was this special role of a dictator that lasted only for half a year. Maybe early Panem worked as the leadership was rotatory, each district ruled for a year, then onto the next? But one time the capitol didn't give his power, like Julius Caesar gave himself dictator for life, the Capitol did the same thing? But how could when they had nothing to give the districts, and the districts had everything the capitol needed?
@manuek huntyk yeah me too. i mean after the catastrophic events that destroyed North America and created panem, wouldn't the survivors know about how their history and goverment worked? most of Panem is the USA so wouldn't the survivors try to establish a country and government like the USA? or did they try but after years and years the history and information died out? I always wondered something similar to your questions.

I was wondering what happened if someone turned 19 during training. I always assumed if 11, you would have to wait a year until 12, while if turning 19, I thought they mapped it out so that was impossible. Also, imagine being reaped at 18. That must be annoying.
Being reaped at 18 is way better thab any other age.

I always kinda thought it was the year you turn 12/18, not the exact date. Like, kids born in January and December of the same year both can get reaped on the 12th year since they were born

I think that it would be like this;
Let’s say that your 12th birthday is on October 19th, you can be reaped that year even if you still are 11, cause you turn 12 that year, so that counts as you are 12. And the year you turn 19 you are still 18 when the reaping is, but because you turn 19 that year you can’t be reaped cause then you are almost one year older than 18, so that would count as 19 for the reaping

Question: if you’re born on 4th of July and it’s your first reaping how would your name be added to the reaping bowl? Would it be a last minute thing? How would this effect tesserae?
You would be eligible for tesserae, and you name would have been added pre-emptively. They do have birth records, therefore do know who turns 12 and when
It’s funny that the reaping is on the 4th of July because that’s when America celebrates their independence, but since it is no longer America but it’s Panem they probably did the reaping on the day where people used to celebrate freedom but now nobody has freedom and it’s showed on this day with the reapings.

So assuming paneem uses the same calendar we do today, do you think someone born on the 29th of febuary could still be reaped young, or do you think they could get by on the technically until they were 48?
Just like in our society, they would be considered the age of the number of years they have lived, not the number of birthdays

This is a problem I faced when writing one of my fanfic books where my previous mc from the last book (and the 1st hunger games victor) they reaped her child once he turned was eligible and his birthday was the day after the reaping and figuring it out hurt my head lol
I have once wrote a little story about someone that turned 19 on the day of hte actual games.
Like you said if someone gets reaped on the day they turned 19 would they have time to take the slip with their name out of the bowl? Also if they do get reaped and the gards don't know until there in the training area do they get sent back to their district and do the reaping again?
Their name wouldn't have been in the bowl in the first place. They have birth records, they know if you'll be 19

If you are born july 5th the the day after the reaping you get your name added a year later because you wouldn't legally have your name put in because you wouldn't be 12 yet so you wouldn't have to compete for a year.

To clarify, I think Katniss already fell for him by the end of the first book and it was pretty obvious Peeta was in love with before the games even began.
