It's interesting how much better the photos from the UK on this stock have come out compared to the US - the even light from being perpetually overcast seems to suit it much better with its lack of dynamic range (the colours seem more accurate). Looking forward to trying this out in Wales when my rolls arrive 😀 Great first video and honestly some of the best photos I've seen taken on this film so far.
I'd say that Jason from grainyday did pretty well, but I tend to agree with you.
@@thebendu33 Yeah agreed - his after-sunset shots worked really well too, I assume because of the lower light range. It's almost like it exposes like slide film. I imagine a lot of future development will go into making it more flexible in its exposure 😀

@@thebendu33 Yeah! Especially as Fujifilm are winding down their film operations somewhat. I'm looking forward to trying out the two rolls I ordered around here.

Brilliant video! Your results look perfect! I‘ve seen videos with high contrast pictures that looked like a Lomography film. Your results are very balanced!
Thanks for an informative review of Phoenix. It was especially interesting to see how it performed in the typical lighting conditions we have at this time of year with the muted colours in the landscape. Also, your car is ace 🙂👍

What camera and lens did you use? And where did you shoot? the countriside is gorgeous... I personally love the halation effect this film does. Keep up the good work, looking forward for future videos!
Looks exactly like my setup, a M3 with a 50mm Summicron Dual-Range lens. I see the socket for the viewfinder attachment. He‘s not using that so it‘s not the 35mm Summicron, which needs the attachment, if you want to use the viewfinder.

Seems a bit contrasty. Watched the Harmann interview on this film, and the chemists/engineers said it was nearer ISO 125 than 200. Think I would try it different than box speed.

Am I talking utter rubbish, or is the Harman film quite similar to Autochrome from 100 years+ ago? I also liked the comment about buying cameras I definitely don't need WYC is a very good place to do that.

I liked those pictures you took. Don't know why you apologized for it.
The shadows are so underexposed that the ISO of 200 has to be some sort of joke. The only reason to rate this at ISO 200 is to place exposure high to off set the extreme contrast. Shot at a rational film speed, I suspect the highlights would be regularly blown out. I like the color balance. Others report that the resolution is visibly poor, and the grain is excessive. There is no color balancing mask emulsion layer, which means that with a bit of reprogramming, it can be scanned, but it will never be seriously RA-4 printed What we seem to have here is an early prototype of a film in development (no pun intended). There was a time when a self-respecting manufacturer would terminate an employee who dared to let something like this escape the factory. With a combination of low consumer standards for quality and application of the social media hype machine, it seems that the marketing trend now is to put half done junk into the market and pretend that it's for real in order to make a few more bucks to fund the development process. Call me when Harmon/Ilford decides they have a real film for review.
Why so serious?
If I wanted the best possible photo from a quality perspective, I would just use digital. The power that a .raw file gives you, plus other things like 5-axis stabilisation, autofocus / zoom in on parts of the picture, live view, film just doesn't compare.
I definitely agree that the film has a bit of way to go before I'd call it good, but making film is difficult, and I like seeing the film in this raw state.
It would also be rather boring if they made a film from scratch and it just started off good. Like, if they made their film have similar results to Fujifilm, why would I buy their film over Fujifilm? Competing directly with fuji/kodak is pointless, since fuji/kodak will have lower prices and their films have been refined for decades. Atleast in its current state the film gives an interesting look.
@@geogeo3644 Yeah it seems like somebody missed the step where Harman are trying something new, need to raise money to develop it further, and are actually soliciting feedback from customers early on rather than potentially wasting years of development and ending up with a flop. I sure hope nobody is forced to work under @randallstewart1224 when his choice would be to fire some of the only people in the industry taking risks instead of rebadging Kodak film stocks.
I love how you use subjective terms like "excessive" and "poor", as if your definition of subjectivity is the only one that we should use. Are you also as critical of the likes of Holga and Lomography for producing (gasp) plastic cameras with (shock horror) imperfect lenses that oh by the way are very popular? I think Harman should be congratulated for this, I think the results for a first attempt at colour film look amazing, and I've ordered 5 rolls.
I also need to think about the business ecosystem in which Harmon operates. Time was the retail demand for film was massive, and film manufactureres either had stock piles of cash or they had no problem raising capital to R&D new products. Those days are long gone.
Harman took a business risk with this project. They made something out of nothing, perhaps that something will be one day be amazing for those of us who still shoot film. Harman operated on this project with zero revenue or a greatly reduced bottom line. I, for one, want to add to their revenue stream and place my vote for more. So yes, I placed an order for a handful of rolls.
Also, let's think about business competition. When was the last time a major film manufacturer felt any competitive pressure to either create something new or perhaps even lower their prices? Harmon is sending a signal, I am listening. I hope the other manufacturer(s) is/are too.
