    In Philippines, music is not subject or course in University, it is life. When you go every where there is music. We sing along in public or just sing it in our head so we naturally internalize the song, we unconsciously grow by the experience and the emotion of the artist, then we learn their techniques so we can also sing how they felt. Love your reactions and breakdown to our artist work 💪🏻👍🏼❤️❤️❤️

    Mahal, I think, originated from the word "halaga", which means value. When prefix "ma" is added, it becomes mahalaga which means important or treasured. From mahalaga comes the word mahal which means expensive or high valued. Also, "kita" has many meanings but here it's a shorten word for phrase "ko ikaw" which means "I to you". So mahal kita might originally means I treasure you. Which is easier to use in courtship since saying I love you can be too heavy. But through time and evolution of language, now it also means I love you. Now that I think abt it, even "iniibig kita" might originally didn't really mean I love you either since "ibig" means "want" so it's actually I want you rather than I love you. So maybe the most proper translation of I love you is "sinisinta kita" or "iniirog kita" or "ginigiliw kita". But those are very old words and you won't hear them anymore except in ballads.

    • @loryasis7837
      @loryasis7837 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Overall, I think before Filipinos learned the existence of English language, we already had ways of verbalizing our admiration or affection to someone. Now, I realized that we've lost a lot in translation. How foreign language also affects the debt and meaning of our own words. We had so many ways of expressing emotions and everything is now perceived as "I love you" when it can mean something else. Iniirog kita or sinisinta kita, it feels like they should mean something else but I can't grasp it. I tried to accept the fact that we already lost a lot and we keep on loosing more but that's just how language is. I'm always amazed how many Filipino words I don't know, especially when I'm talking w/ my parents and they're using unfamiliar words and I know there's no way I'll hear them in this generation.

  • @hw3874
    @hw3874 3 ปีที่แล้ว +58

    Mahal means love (verb) and yes it also means expensive. It is also used as a term of endearment. In this case Mahal means Dear.
    Pag-ibig means love (noun)
    Kita is actually “you” (the “you” being the object of “I”) so Mahal Kita means (II) Love You. Maybe that’s why it is “we” or “nosotros” in English and Spanish.
    English = I love you (3 words)
    Tagalog = Mahal (love) Kita (I to you)
    Spanish = Te (you) Amo (I love)

    The Philippines has 7,641 islands. divided into three island groups of Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. Bisaya usually refers to a person speaking "Hiligaynon or Ilonggo" or it may also refer to some of the dialects used in Visayas and some areas in Mindanao. You have to understand that if you are living in the Philippines that means you can speak Tagalog, English, "your Regions" dialect {if you are from the Provinces} and also the dialects of your "Neighboring Regions". That means you can speak at least 2-Languages and 3+ Dialects.

    “mahal kita” translates to “I love you” in English, and “te amo” when you drop “yo” in Spanish. “Mahal” in this case is a verb. But it is also used as a noun to mean the person of affection, it’s the same word for “mi amor” in Spanish or “my love” (seldom used) in American English. The same word “mahal” is also an adjective which means “expensive.” In song lyrics, you’ll have to check the context for usage 😊. Back to “mahal kita,” the “kita” part is a contraction of “ko ikaw.” “Ko” can be translated to the English “I” used as the doer of the action (of the verb “mahal”) but this form of “I” is placed after the verb. “Ikaw” means “ you” which is the direct object of the verb. “Mahal kita” will roughly convert to “love I you” (incorrect syntax in English)... The Filipino language has a convenient form of combining “I you” into “kita.” You’ll likely hear the more formal, classic way of saying “I love you” as “iniibig kita” in older songs. The noun for “love” is “pag-ibig” pronounced like two words, “pag” and “i-big.” “Panaginip” means “dream” in English, or sueno in Spanish. But I think he’s talking about dream, as in “dream girl.” The word for “dream” to denote aspiration is “pangarap.”

    Before we have "malalim na tagalog" means deep tagalog. Usually used in old tagalog poetry like 'ibayo' (deep tagalog) which means 'malayo' (common tagalog) it translate far. Another example: "bukang-liwayway" (deep tagalog) means "madaling-araw"(common tagalog) translate to dawn

  • @dustinthecosmos
    @dustinthecosmos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    "Kita" in "Mahal kita" is like "You are to me"
    So if you would translate "Mahal kita" into its realist english meaning, it's like "Love is you are to me"
    "Kita" is usually put after a verb/noun.
    Ex.
    Mahal kita (I love you) = Love is you are to me
    Miss kita (I miss you) = Miss is you are to me
    Gusto kita (I like you) = Like is you are to me
    Baby kita (You are my baby) = Baby is you are to me
    Prinsesa kita (You are my Princess) = Princess is you are to me
    P.S. There is another Filipino term "Kita" which means income. And "Mahal" could mean "Love" or "Expensive".

    Some Tagalog words have two meanings and the use is based on the context. Mahal means love when used as a term of endearment. "Mahal kita" means "I love you". You say that to a person. "Mahal ko kayo" means "I love you all". You say that to a group of people. You can use that at the end of your video.😄
    Mahal means expensive when you speak of value (e.g., When you ask how much is a cup of coffee and you were told 5 quids. You say "Ang mahal naman!" means "That's expensive!"

    One word could mean several things depending on how you say it. For example "KITA" could mean "to see" as a verb, "you" as an object pronoun, "earning" as a noun.
    Mahal as a verb is "To Love" while as an adjective it means "Expensive". It could also be a term of endearment which means "Dear".
