Binging with Babish: Brisket from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

  • Passover approaches, and thanks to the magnificent meal made by Midge Maisel, we've got a great excuse to whip up some Jewish BBQ on the show. Slowly braised to tender perfection in a delicate balance of sweet, sour, and savory flavors, this brisket outshines even charoset at the Seder table. And that shit is delicious.

The first time I watched the show, I shared the same viewpoint. After rewatching the show twice, I've come to see Joel as an important part of Mitch's life. He made a stupid decision because he couldn't live with being a joke and now he and Mitch are seperated, but their bond is strong as friends. Besides, I liked him better in the manager/protector role anyway :D

There's this Yemeni bread called "khaliat al nahl", It's to die for. It's made in this honeycomb formation and is filled with cream cheese and glazed with honey, It's very rarely found in most bakery's here in the middle east and isn't ever made as good as what you'd find in an Arab aunty's kitchen. For the love of God make it, I know a lotta folks (if any) wouldn't have asked for it but believe me, you nor the viewers would regret this incredibly underrated bun.

I’m planning on making this recipe for my family tonight, Saturday, and chilling, slicing, reheating, and serving for a delicious Sunday dinner! Hopefully you see this and might be able to respond, I do not have a stainless steel roaster, I do however have a good heavy Dutch oven with a nice tight heavy lid. I’m planning on getting a smaller brisket, (just me, my wife, and 15 year old sister in law, and our 8 week old) so I was thinking a smaller brisket started in a cold Dutch oven, with the same proportions of braising liquid and veggies(who doesn’t love that), started out cold Dutch oven, seared and prepared and braised, and reheated in the Dutch oven. I don’t see any issues with this, but hey you made the recipe and I’m not about to do it if I can get your advice first. Might contact a friend who went through culinary school and could potentially have a stainless steel roasting tray🤔. Hope you see this and are able and willing to respond, just curious cause I want this to be a fantastic meal, and try to stay as true to form as possible. Take care, stay safe, be well! And thanks for all the great content!!!👌🏼

This may be the first time I heard a non-Jew just drop "Ashkenazi" in a sentence like it's NBD (and without it being because they're spouting some weird conspiracy theory about us). Thanks for recognizing us with this!
(Also I'm making the assumption that Babish is not, himself, Jewish. Mostly based on the ubiquity of unremarked-upon treyf in this show. Including in that light spinach salad, if I'm not mistaken. But if he is, awesome; one more we get to call our own!)

oaktree_ I know PLENTY of Reform and Conservative Jews who don’t keep kosher (if anything, the tattoos would be the biggest hint that he probably isn’t)

I don’t *think* he is, but I’m not sure and what I *do* know is that he’s a really great guy so he’d respect you and your religion.

@@abbyehrenstein2550 He did mention eating Passover brisket many times, so at the least, he knows Jews pretty well; don't know if he's ever stated his religious beliefs before.

Ah it was nice to see this. I never knew how my grandma made her brisket for holidays, although her brisket was dry as cotton, didn't do any of the wonderful things you did, heck, I think she only cooked it with onions

This was great to watch, especially since my mom and I also made a brisket for Pesach tonight and we had a really similar recipe to you.
