Back in the 1990’s thru the 2000’s, I bought used Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, The Police, Pink Floyd, and The Who albums for less than 10 dollars apiece. It’s amazing how the prices went up in the past 10 years.

In the mid 2000's I found Beatles, Pink Floyd including one time a German pressing of Wish You Were Here and Neil Young classics at thrift stores for very reasonable prices. That would never happen now. Just at the very end of my time collecting records prices started going apeshit.

15:11 - 😆😆😆 I have AJA on CD, yet I felt like listening to the LP version, so I borrowed it from the library - anyway, I can't even look at the cover art without remembering seeing you toss it to the side and declaring "yeah, this is horrible!"😅 Disagree as I do, I still thought it was funny. I still love the album, but I appreciated the good laugh, too.

Not a fan of the Croce material, but i do have his Best Of cd in my collection.
This may seem a bit loopy, but is true. My father was a longtime ballroom manager in Iowa during the early 50’s-early 70’s. He would receive promo albums from management agencies pushing their artists’ latest work. Most of these bands were from the midwest region, but not always. I’m reminded by your mention of Future Blues by Canned Heat. I was 11 or 12 at the time (‘71-‘72) when the record was handed off to me. I was not a big blues fan at that age, but i did bash about to “Let’s Work Together” on drums.
I completely got ahead of myself here. Back to my original point as related to Croce: My father was also a former Air Force Vet from WW2 era. He operated a charter service with his Beechcraft Bonanza single-engine to help provide for our large (5 kids) family in addition to the ballrooms. He died in an accident not far from home. 8/16/73. Croce would die just over a month later. Elvis passed 8/16/77.

I picked up the first two Jim Croce albums from Ebay. They were from a radio station's collection and near mint. You're so right, the 'deep tracks' are just as good if not better than the songs that are played to death.

Yeah I don't understand it either, records that sold a bazillion copies are now fetching outrageous prices. You're right about the Moody Blues their WHOLE catalogue can be had for 6 dollars and 34 cents. Canned Heat's "Future Blues" is a GREAT L.P. Also if you want to start a TH-cam channel about music and need a background of albums, to give the impression that you are some kinda music aficionado you can buy Jim Nabors, Mitch Miller, and Herb Alpert records, buy some shelves and make it look like you've got a shit ton of L.P's then spew your non-sense about the 10 records no rock and roll fan can be without. Of course I'm not talking about you Robert, I love your channel. But there are so many channels here in the TH-cam wilderness of the people I'm talking about that consider their taste to be the epitome of knowledge.

I found those records in a big bag at a second hand store called The Village Discount Outlet. It's a local second hand store/thrift shop. I used get all these records over there in the 90's. Sadly, what makes certain albums super expensive has nothing to do with the quality of the music, performance, etc.

I find albums from the late 80s to be very keenly priced. In 1988-89 the CD was still something of a status symbol, and people were still buying albums in large numbers on vinyl. These would _eventually_ be replaced by CD versions, and are now very plentiful on Discogs. Two British soul albums were literally there for the taking - _So Good_ by *Mica Paris* and _To Whom It May Concern_ by *The Pasadenas.* Both in tip-top condition, and both for only £2 plus shipping. For some reason, *Tracy Chapman's* debut album has been shifting well on Discogs.

Nice to see the first side of Inna Godda Da Vida get some love, my personal favourite is My Mirage which is a Doors ripoff but in a great way. Ed Sanders from the Fuggs had a great track on his solo album Sanders' Truck Stop called The Illiad that has lyrics that are sadly still relevant now. I discovered it on a Warner loss leader sampler called The Big Ball.

Great video. Nice to know that some albums have maintained normal prices. I love the first 5 steve miller albums. Brave new world is one of my favorites. Listen to the song My Dark Hour, and about 13 seconds in, you will hear the riff for fly like an eagle. At least it sounds like it to me. Lots of other good albums listed. I never really liked the Fat Mattress album. But Noel Redding had another band in the early 70s called Road that i found to be more interesting.
    Cheers.

Great list. Love Nazareth. But yeah, Hair of the Dog is tough to find that in decent shape.
I found the Stooges weren’t that expensive a few years ago. On Amazon it was $12, new. But I could get the CDs, all three studio albums, for $9.50. I caved and got the CDs. That was a few years ago. I bet the CDs are even cheaper and the first Stooges album has gone up.

Got lucky with my copy a mono copy Surrealistic Pillow at a thrift shop. Paid a buck for it. However that same chain of shops now has a copy of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. for $30. A bargain!
Other albums I'd like to add: Super Session with Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and Steve Stills. Brain Salad Surgery is still cheap and classic, if not online then at any goodwill. In funk/soul and jazz there's Ramsey Lewis. His early 70s Cadet stuff hasn't budged even after he died and is criminally overlooked.
    Man there just so much.

Yeah, it's really surprising how cheap Pretenders albums are - especially the first album - but as you say, it's probably only a matter of time. The Fever Tree album has always been undervalued. San Francisco Girls is such an underrated single. Amazingly I have yet to go on a deep dive with any those Croce albums. His singles are so great, I really need to take your advice and grab that stuff while it's still priced...er...as it should be.

I have noticed the same phenomenon with Michael Jackson's "Thriller" that is going on with albums like "Rumours" and Boston's 1st. Another album that sold millions and millions of copies; actually, 1 of the greatest selling albums of all time! And people are paying $20 and up for this? No, really, there are MILLIONS of copies out there, a person shouldn't pay more than $5-$6. Madness! But on the "still affordable" side of things, I've noticed Traffic LPs are still abundant and cheap; same with Spirit. If I have a hankering for another rockin' Johnny Winter LP from the '70s, they are cheap and plentiful! Gotta strike when things aren't "hip."

Great episode! I might have missed one of your episodes if you did this already.. but how about doing songs with lyrics we couldn’t quite make out but thought we knew. Turns out the actual lyrics were different. Lol. For example when I was a kid I thought the lyrics for blinded by the light … he was saying “revved up like a douche”. I didn’t know what a douche was but would sing that line out loud every time it played on radio.

Actually, for the old Steve Miller Band, I went the "new" way. Sound of Vinyl had a sale early January and those were $8 a piece.. and there was a 20% discount coupon on top of that.. hard to pass. If there's one I really like, I might seek a OG or in that era press but I think I'll be ok.
I got Children of the Future, Sailor, Brave New World, Your Saving Grace, Number 5, and Rock Love, Recall The Beginning and I even grabbed Selections From The Vault.
I have The Joker album, I like it but I hate the title song.

I remember when cd's first came out. Most of them were expensive. If you had a relative that really liked you a lot, you might get a cd by the Police or The Cars or at least Huey Lewis & The News. If you had a relative that didn't like you so well, you'd get Envionmental Sounds, or Sounds Of The Rain Forest or Waves. No, not Katrina & The Waves; that'd be 18 bucks too rxpensive. It was ccean waves. A $2.99 Environment Sounds cd was the the greatest way to tell somebody"I really don't care for you much, and am just going through the motions." "Hope you never discover they are only 1/7 the usual cd price.
The Commodores were mentioned. Is it true that Brick House was former President Dwight D. Eisenhower's favorite record?
At first some people thought that Mofi was backing off the midrange to hide flaws in the Master Tapes. Even more people would have thought that if they would have released Sticky Fingers first. But then people realized back then "They're doing that on all of them " They did have nice sharp transients and we got to hear what clean brass sounds like. The Nautilus lps took out the bottom and CBS Mastersound they added to everywhere, especially the treble.
Years ago, classical Living Stereo records, sought out by many audiophiles, had their market totally collapse. Some Living Stereo records that in 1990 were such a good deal at $150, that you would thank your dealer and shake his hand for being so nice about the price on it; some of those are $15 records now. For those who still care.
Has there ever been a collapse on any particular one series of records like the Living Stereo collapse of the mid 1990s before?

    • @RobertFithen
      @RobertFithen  ปีที่แล้ว

I've always thought that was the reason for a lot of those environmental cds being purchased. Office holiday parties too. I've never heard that about Eisenhower. The RCA Red Seal had a similar fate to the Living Stereo.

I think Blondie's first 3 are impeccable rock records but I will definitely take the first Pretenders record over anything Blondie ever released. Maybe the second one too. Check out my Moody Blues "Long Distance Voyager" video. That one is low key, may want a gummy. I get people not being too fond of that one but it is probably their best album cover. Nazareth! I have the English version that looks like it has had beer and piss spilled on it. In fact, I don't trust the authenticity of a "Hair Of The Dog" record that doesn't look or sound like it has been beaten to hell and back. Great idea for a video! Please keep us updated! (i.e. "Rumors" for over 5 bucks is ridiculous)
