My mom has a difficult time understanding mental illness and this show was huge for our relationship. When Ted had his first panic attack, she turned to me and asked if that's what it's really like. Ted Lasso was the first person to get my mom to start to understand the way I experience life. We cry a lot when we watch it. I'd love to see you react to more

My dads the same way, even though I’m
diagnosed with anxiety by a medical professional, he still doesn’t think I have it

@D.J. Tanner my mom has come a long way, from not believing in mental illness, to not understanding it at all, all the way to where she is now - she can see me going into a manic episode before even I can. This show played a big part in her developing empathy for mental illnesses

I think Ted's apprehension around Doctor Sharon isn't just based on his limited experiential judgment of psychiatrists and counsellors, but also the notion that, in the absence of being able to be an involved parent in his son's life, the team have become his surrogate child figures, and his distrust of Doctor Sharon is rooted in the fear that he will become replaced in his son's life by another father figure, especially one who doesn't have the same failings that Ted had because, in Ted's mind, he's not enough, and if he was, then his marriage wouldn't have failed.
Now, with recent developments in Season 3 that I won't spoil, those two sets of reasons have converged, and it will be interesting to see how much the show delves into that, and the idea that Ted may see the fears he had previously faced as wholly justified.

I really enjoyed this development in Ted Lasso. Ted is such a delightful character but that level of relentless positivity is unsustainable, I feel.

Please keep reacting. I love this show so much. It's like a giant hug when you're laughing and crying at the same time, but mostly laughing.
Season 3 continues Ted's mental health journey. Also, it's not just Ted, but Rebecca, Keely, Jamie, and Roy all go through their own mental health/self worth journey. as well.

I’d really love to see your reaction to Ted’s further distress piled on in episode 3.3, upon finding out the horrible truth about his old marriage counselor. Before that episode I pitied Ted’s ex-wife for not being able to appreciate what she had, but now I am utterly disgusted with her. And “Dr. Jake” should have his medial license revoked, it is unethical, inappropriate, and downright gross for a medical practitioner to date a patient. And it’s even more disturbing when you remember that Ted mentioned that Michelle had been going to Dr. Jake for therapy before they even began marriage counseling, meaning that Ted WASN’T being paranoid when he said he felt like he was being ganged up on, he was ACTUALLY being gaslit like hell.

OHMYGOD I forgot Michelle was seeing him before Ted joined!!!!

Yeah, "it felt like he was just saying everything wrong with me" goes from "bad therapy experience" to "is this man actively trying to sabotage their relationship?" Really fast with more context.

Your discussion of the CBT technique of testing the accuracy of someone’s beliefs was interesting! I was pathologically afraid of returning to work after struggling with depression and PTSD for a long time/on ESA. I found it hard to ask for help at my new job when I needed it but my therapist asked me to fill in a form when I asked for help.
What am I afraid the person will think/do if I ask for help? (E.g, think less of me, fire me).
Then I had to write down the actual indicators (what they said, their expressions etc) when I did ask for help and evaluate whether they confirmed or refuted my anxieties. It did me a hell of a lot of good.

Yay! More Ted Lasso reactions, please 😀
I love that folks of my vintage are learning that self care and being gracious towards yourself are good things. I grew up hyper critical of myself, which was reinforced by my parents and teachers. Learning to take some time for myself, to engage with my feelings, and some help from the right meds has really made life a lot more pleasant for me and my family.

Your comment on how “fear is not a good motivator” brought to mind the film Whiplash - which while an absolutely brilliant film, tried to make the case that an abusive teacher who pushes their students too far maybe what motivates brilliance. It tries to straddle the line between demonstrating this as toxic behavior while constantly suggesting that this toxicity maybe necessary… and so many friends I saw the film with came away saying “Yeah, I guess the greats really must be pushed that way,” which was very upsetting for me as I entirely disagree with this suggestion and the glorification of abusive teaching practices.
I would love to see you comment on that film.
I believe there have been study after study which have highlighted that people are far more likely to succeed by using positive reinforcement rather than negative or abusive feedback - and yet we as a society keep buying into this belief that a good coach or teacher must push their students to the very limit . In fact much of our military is trained with this attitude in mind, which is extremely scary and may be part of what contributes to the insanely high rates of suicide within the U.S. military as well as sexual assault.

i always enjoy hearing your thoughts on shows i love, looking forward to seeing your reactions to the next few episodes (only if you want to of course, but this is where everything really starts to kick off so i would encourage it)!
i’m not gonna spoil anything but i feel i should warn you that s02e09 “beard after hours” is VERY different from the rest of the episodes. it’s very good and incredibly intriguing from a psychological perspective but if you go into it expecting it to be like all the other episodes you’ll be disappointed.
if you do decide to go ahead and finish season two, season three is currently being released and i think there’s some things in there that you would be interested in. there’s only three episodes out when i’m writing this comment but in particular one of the storylines that starts in episode three looks very promising.
sorry for the kinda long comment lol i hope you have a nice day!

Had to take a pause to see if that's how UK sports fans chant, and holy crap you're not joking. I'm amazed how much swearing and research UK sports fans do with their chants.
Also had dealt with a band teacher who was Lead Lasso, but all the time. And I was taught that was what a "good" teacher was because he was strict. Little did I know I had to deal with some leftover trauma and internalized messed up views on people being mean and angry by showing and teaching through "tough love". Yeah, anyone who teaches through fear doesn't help at all, or if anything makes a horrible foundation waiting to crumble. That band teacher shouldn't have been teaching middle schoolers

my panic attacks are the worst... in one side of my mind I know exactly what is happening. I am able to say "this is an anxiety attack." But the other side my mind has me sitting on the floor in my bathroom, trying to make one coherent thought, trying to get a breath that isn't hyperventalized, and counting the ways I have failed. The problem is compounded now by the fact I have a cell phone and can facebook my attack in real time, so now I have to apologize the next day for the complete incoherency of my texts.

It's interesting, because as a football fan I look at some of the stuff and it feels like they've really "Americanised" a lot of things, but when it comes to the characters and the things outside of the game, just like Ted there's a lot of charm and warmth that makes it a really great show to watch.
Also, Hannah Waddingham is beyond beautiful 😍😍😍

Wow when he was playing that alter ego, Jason Sudakeis sounded exactly like he did on a few SNL skits he did! That guttural scream sounds just like how he screamed on SNL while playing certain characters 😂

I need to start therapy. I tried way back when after highschool maybe ten years ago at a dr that my step mom referred and had seen but i forgot to leave my phone number in the voicemail i left at his office and i got a text from my stepmom telling me that. I dont know why but it sort of pissed me off that the therapist asked her to call me and tell me to call them again instead of just asking my stepmom for my number

I think there are a few episodes of bluey that would be good including one with an ADHD character, a character who is unable to have children and how that affects them. A nicer show to watch but also even looking at the child psychology side of things
