I'm obviously biased but I genuinely think he's one of the best pundits speaking about geopolitics and politics in general; at least in the English speaking world. Its a shame he usually gets so few views, though I guess that's the tradeoff when you don't rage bait for maximum views.
Voting for Harris. Why? Character, rule of law, tariffs, abortion rights, how he handled COVID, Ukraine, NATO, leadership, staffing of the administration, etc. I could go on.
Good luck. I see the benefit /cost/ risk balance for America the other way. But we'll be ok either way. Looking back, 2016-2020 seems a lot like 2020-2024.
Thank you for providing valuable insights with honesty and truthfulness all the time and especially during elections time. We need more Ian Bremmer's in this world.
1:55 Ian should've said, "by people I mean Republicans who support Trump" No democrat is saying election is rigged. Even republicans who don't support Trump like Liz Chaney doesn't say that. Only Trumpers say that. 8:16 This should be repeated everywhere. "Trump is unfit to be holding a HOA office never mind the US presidency"
The 2024 US election is probably the longest, most divisive and most expensive election in the history of the country and perhaps in the world . No other democratic country is adopting this kind of election system, most elections in Asia, Europe, the Americas, Canada and Australia only lasted at best 2-3 months with a cap on spending. Just for comparison the 2024 US election cycle lasted more than 2 years started in 2023. Our democracy really needs an update.
indeed. And it's never going to get an update when the parties have various advantages depending on which aspect of the system you look at. It's going to be status quo until there is any serious contention from a true independent candidate, or third party momentum in politics in general. That we have these two largely inept parties holding all the keys with no motivation to change anything is the biggest hinderance to progress IMO.
@@john1425 Trump has been in legal trouble since way before he (leave alone she) got voted into office. This isn't about imprisoning an innocent person because he happens to be your opposition. If he goes to prison, it'll be because of HIS OWN actions and nothing else. Nobody forced him to commit tax and business fraud, nobody forced him to commit sexual assault, nobody forced him to take and hide classified documents after leaving the office, and nobody forced him to try to overturn election results through planting fake electors and through intimidation of lawmakers and his own VP. He DID all of that, and if you do that sort of stuff, then don't play victim when the law catches up to you. If you don't want to do the time, then don't do the crime.
Is the Electoral College an asset or a deficit to the democratic process? If it does not promote democracy, how can we stand by it and still call ourselves democratic? Who does the Electoral College serve? Who has it served in the past? Are uniform voting regulations part of the democratic process? Why does our country not have them? What do we have to do to get them established? Why does our democracy not represent the will of the majority of the people here? Why is our government so resistant to change, particularly change for the better?
Ian is describing what we all already know. Why isn’t he using his platform to advocate for solutions and reforms, unless he is benefiting from the status quo?
I do not agree that everybody has to vote. Two elderly people I know who have voted Repub for 80 years now finally say that they don't like either candidate and are not voting for the first time. It's a win (for me) because they aren't giving votes to somebody who they don't especially understand or like. Yes, they could vote 3rd party but they know nothing about them and it would split votes from those who are voting and really know what's going on.
Same rich/corporate donors feed money to both parties to ensure no third party emerges. The barrier of entry is the tens of billions of dollars. Even one raises enough money, as Bernie had, party machineries are there to fix the result.
I reluctantly and respectfully voted for Trump. My issue is with Kamala Harris and her lack of coherent policy stances. Trump is the less of two evils, who will secure the southern border, improve national security, remove double taxation and he treated RFK with respect.. I would have much rather voted for RFK, Bernie or Biden.
Of what use is it to vote in a system which doesn't respect one's vote? I am speaking primarily, but not solely, of the Electoral College. The US Senate s also a profoundly anti-democratic institution. And DC residents do not have full voting rights. When people like Ian Bremmer start focusing on reforming the system of democracy, I'll take a lot more seriously his exhortation to VOTE, because it will start to feel like it really means something.
So it's distrusted/detested system, then the result is invalid. You will need some hard time to rebuild trust, it will probably bring instability to your society.
Thank you Ian. You have spoken out loud what so many of us know. I believe in this country and the constitution and I do not trust this beloved democracy under Trump. I too am not connected to either party. I am voting for Kamala Harris and I pray she wins for the good of the future of our democracy.
When a mob boss says he wants somebody to sleep with fishes he's not speaking about the rest of people and aquatic animals. He knows what he's saying and most of us know what he means. Fortunate for Cheney that she has protection the average citizen doesn't.
Campaigns now cost tens of billions of dollars and both parties are supported by the same donors. It is precisely to raise the barrier to entry for third party candidates.
I'd vote for Harris - not so much because I believe in all she says, but because I believe as you do that she will adhere to the law - if I were an American. I'm Canadian living in the US.
I am fine with most of what you said and actually agree with your sentiments on Trump. But you should clarify your views on the electoral college, because some are taking your comments as support for the Democrat's desire to overturn our constitutional order by abolishing the electoral college. These desires worry me as much as the manifest unfitness of Trump for the presidency. If we are to work our way through the current political realignments without descending into violence, things that protect the rights of the minority must be protected. This includes the electoral college protecting the rights of small states and the Senate filibuster protecting the minority party. What the progressive left fails to understand is that political gridlock on controversial issues is a feature built into our system by the wisdom of our founding fathers, not a bug that must be fixed.
Money is the problem. I assume Linden you don't have the money to influence elections. But superpacs do. America should not be determined by money but by people. Otherwise the very corruption people like to cite influencing the election actually begins to occur.
Wow.....Ian Bremmer.....you think Canadian "democracy" that harbors Khalistani separatist movements is "fine" but couldn't get yourself to name the world's largest democracy by people (India) that just demonstrated a free and fair election in April......you even mention New Zealand which while a democracy not a significant world power..... You need to introspect on your biases before you provide your "expert" opinion....
Eh maybe a little, you're a decent guy.. We will be fine. Threats are external. Internal unrest will subside as we tire, get used to change, get a leader with a vision we want to follow, and sadly, the emergence of external foreign threats.
I have a question: If a hypothetical Trump administration decides to impose tariffs on its free trade neighbors, should not those neighbors tear up the free trade accord and impose an even tougher tariff regime on the US? If one imposes tariffs on your free trade partners its not really free trade anymore is it?

Ian if you think Trump is ineligible to run, why don’t you say the same about Harris who was installed as the Democratic candidate without ever getting a single vote in a primary, ever after the duly selected candidate was ousted by his own party. You may not like Trump but he got to this point in a more democratic way than Harris.
It's not required that parties have primaries to select their nominees. I don't think we had primaries until the early 20th century. You can say Biden was pushed out, but as far as we know he made the final decision to withdraw. And virtually all of his released delegates and a large majority of Democrats nationwide pretty quickly declared their support for Harris. Hard to say it wasn't democratic.
