    Thank you. I do something very similar, here in the Mojave desert, which is in the southwestern US. before putting the bottle in the ground, I'll wrap the bottom and lower side with wet cardboard. It helps to keep dirt and roots from plugging holes. It also helps to wick the water out more evenly in all directions. Plus, once it has settled for awhile, the water won't run out as fast when you go to fill it again.
    I have to bury ours a few inches deeper, because it is so hot and dry here.

    For anyone wanting to try this, it's be safer to just heat up a meat skewer over a flame and pop the holes in, whilst the bottle is empty, than drill into a bottle of water :D Then put the bottle in the ground and fill it (which you will need to do anyway, because those plants are going to need more than a bottle of water). Also no real need to mark lines on unless you specifically need to remember where you put the holes.

    African similar method : do holes on the top, put the botte up side down. Cut the bottom, and use it as a cap. More simple to full it up.
    Place rocks to protect it from the sun and animals.
    Other in very hot places : before you plant a tree, dig a little deeper, put a brick in the hole. Cut a bottle in two, from top to bottom, fill it with earth, well pressed, and put it in the hole over the brik, plastic bottle up earth down against the brick. Then plant the tree as usual, over that.
    When evaporating, the water will be trapped under the plastic bottle and keep the brick always wet. The roots will find water underneath the plant.
    The Idea is that when you lift a big stone, it is always wet underneath.
    Replicate that with any system that will trap evaporing water, under the tree.
    You can add a drop by drop systèm by burrying one or more bottles, one into the others.

    I just this with a fabric 10gal/8 pocket strawberry planter & used an Evian bottle since the planter about 18in tall. I read the water has trouble getting to the bottom. I used a flexible cutting board around the top edge so the water goes straight down & not out the sides of the fabric. I just planted 4 strawberry plants in hoping it’ll work. Fingers crossed. Thank you for the share.

    Nice. I did something similar with 2 liter soda bottles: I refilled them every day with a funnel and hose, and mulched over top to keep evaporation down. The next year, I drilled holes in the top, and cut the bottoms off, so I could spray hose them full from a center point of the garden. It worked!

    I have done a very similar thing but instead using a drill and bit I use a sharp metal point and heat from a gas cooker to punch holes in the plastic bottle. There is no need to fill the bottle with water before making the holed with a sharp pointer. It is easy to control the size of the holes.

      You can try to block the holes with a water permeable material (textile, a wick, wool, cotton, wood fibers ...) to get a more reduced irrigation. Personally I think the technique of the terracotta Olla is one of the best because it gives a slow irrigation effect over the complete surface of the terracotta pot.

    • @Hardcoregamer9
      @Hardcoregamer9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. You can paint black/using anything that's block sun ray coming to inside the bottle
      2. You can check the bottle if it's run out water by open the lids and seeing from top
      3. Depending on your climate, how many holes you drill, doesn't get stuck from smaller materials such stones, etc

    Hi, what is the effective radius of this method for say, a 5 liter bottle? That is how far out from a 5 liter bottle can you plant and it will work effectively? What can you do about toxins in the plastic - are there non-toxic versions or versions you recommend? Can every kind of crop be watered with this method? Thank you! May have some more questions at another point but that's what comes to mind off the top of my head.

      The best method for such farming You can use clay pots and you can fully burrow this clay pot into soil and cover it with clay cap. I'm from Rajasthan India and ....we have not so much water for farming...so we use this method and our ancestors were also used this method. This method is highly effective for fruit farming or big trees if you haven't much water...
      You must try this method in You garden trees.....Dig a clay pot into your tree roots and check the results .....
      Try this method in a single tree and then it's your choice for big scale....
      It's our way and I hope you like it.

      Gr8 question. Here's my take on it. This method can saturate up to 15 inches from the bottle comfortably.
      I do not reccomend bottles that had chemicals or chemical based products before.
      What we really used are bottles that had contents that were used for human consumption and regular water bottles. Much safer. The suggestion about using the clay pot is also a great idea.

    How long does it take to refill the bottle?

    • @richardschiffer4740
      @richardschiffer4740 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the soil. If soil drains well, it can go in 2 hours. If soil is locked it can much longer up to day. It also depends on the size of the hole. His holes are quite small, I would say about 3 mm. Also, it will regulate itself. In the beginning it will go fast. After 4 or 5 refills, it will become much slower.
