I tried this once and it worked well but I got sick and tired of filling the bottles with water. Also, in hot sunny areas the bottles have to be dug deep beneath the soil with just the tops sticking out of the soil because the sun can and does make the water very hot.

I'm using for my plant box of tomatoes. I put two in each box but I'm curious as to why one bottle consistently empties quicker than the other (like every time). Maybe its a stupid question but I had to ask. :) It works very well though! I filled these bottles up and was out of town for seven days. I was afraid to open the shades when I got back expecting to see a brown dead mess. But the plants were all green, healthy looking, standing up and even grew!

Yes holes too small, no flow. or container too rigiid. When container flexs, say from breeze or heat expansion, chance for drips to flow even from small hole. Yes hole size is significant. Too, big, too much flow. Wicking using cotton fabric, through holes might be better than just holes.
Also PET plastic bottles are bad news unfortunately. PFAs, phthalates, bisphenol, antimony, all sorts of junk. Try to use glass stainless, ceramic, silicone; something that won't mess with your endocrine system. Wicks may be better then - hard to drill holes in glass bottles!

Glass is good idea I think. Are those glass?
Unfortunately the PET plastic bottles will leach junk like phthalates, PFAs, bisphenol, antimony, and other endocrine-messing horrors in them, especially when they age in the sun.
Did you put holes into the beer bottle glass, with a hot iron or proper drill? Thx

what is interesting is that the warmer or drier it becomes the more pressure inside the bottle thus releasing more water to the plant
