A bittersweet testament to modern radio design in that it really shows off what's possible in a portable radio in 2025, but then you have to wonder what it would be like if Sony had never left the market and they made something like this with current cellphone-level engineering rather than overseas bin parts. A great simple video of a complex subject though, I wouldn't be surprised if some buyers use this as the quick start guide 📻👍
👍 Awesome video todderbert, i got mine october of last year, and is a very nice unit. Noise reduction is sweet on this dsp receiver. My mla 30+ works well here in southern louisiana, and also the tecsun an200
Thanks todderbert for highlighting the Raddy Malahit DSP2 which I purchased on the Black Friday sale back in November 2024. One hint I learned to lower the motor-boating sound is to enable the "EMI Reduction " function on your radio. I find the NR setting can cause that too if set too high on a small signal. I am still learning little tricks , but it is allot easier to set than my Raddy RF919 plus you can use SSB on MW which helps the weak station sandwiched between two stronger ones. 73! Have a great day!
EMI Reduction didn't seem to help me at all on SW, but turning off the screen, bingo. The 919 is a different beast :) I still enjoy using my $30 ATS-20+
High-end table top in the palm of a large hand. I took it out in the field a month ago and was extremely impressed. I will again when I get more leisure.
Hej Todderbert, thanks for the review! What a nice DSP receiver you have! 🤩 Wow! Wow! Wow! The Raddy Malahit-DSP2 seems so nice, truly radio candy. We'll see, Todderbert, but of course Nils would like to have this DSP receiver. Take care Todderbert of and have fun with that lovely receiver.
Wow THIS is definitely a Cool looking radio and high tech. Maybe if I win big I'll buy one of these in the future. This would definitely be my Weekend secondary Portable radio and not an everyday one it would definitely get stolen. With that being said I love this
I love this thing, I just with it also had a built in telescoping antenna like the ATS200 or Countycomm GP7 for on the go use (in addition to the two antenna connectors). Imagine it in yellow with an old civil defense logo on it :D
When I worked in chip design, we talked about tech like this coming soon... it's taken about 20 years to finally get to a point where it's affordable. When SDR first came out, giga-sampling the air waves was only in the realm of military systems.
You can I have one of the first versions I bought in 2020 or so and I can hook it up via USB and use it with sdr# do a search for how to connect Malahit DSP SDR to computer with SDR#
I have the original Russian DSP2 since 2021, hooked up to a PC via USB cable , Windows recognizes it as a sound device and you can easily use it with any digital decoding program
I don't have the V5, but the DSP2 is supposed to be similar to the DSP3 that the official team has made. Working hard at removing screen interference with different options. The best being the ability to turn off the display. Also remote mounting the antenna helps.
You know, . . I will be a little upset if, . . at the end of all things, there is not a copyrighted, professional song called: "Ironman He's the Man With the Master Plan", playing on the radio by our friend, Todderbert. ;-) . . . No pressure, Todderbert. Just say'in. 🙂
Here’s what I’m wondering: I use portable SW radios indoors with a retractable wire antenna. Would this radio be worthwhile if I don’t plan to upgrade my antenna?
Yes, the wire antenna works well, in this video I am using a wire clipped to the whip. The wire goes up to the inside of my window, and is wrapped along the horizontal top of the blinds.
@@todderbert I had a very nice scanner like that once. It had many gaps. Turned out that holding down some key combo on power-up would open the entire range and even extend it some. I sure miss that scanner. It was a yellow one that came with a set of NASCAR headphones.
I don’t think it’s possible I bought the first version of this in around 2020 it’s the same exact radio just a different case and I’m pretty sure the hardware is not capable of the military bands which kind of stinks but hey.
Hello Sir My sister recently gifted me Digitech AR1780 from Australia. I have an issue facing, I'm using Alkaline Batteries. But it will drain within 2-4 days. Is this normal? What's the solution for enhancing battery life Should I use NiMH Regards
The radio should not drain the batteries this fast while turned off. Use rechargeables if you use the radio often. I would see if there is an exchange policy for your radio.
Yes, there are three bandwidth settings, wide, normal, and narrow. Each one can be full customized to your liking, by being able to set the low, and high thresholds.
Received as a test example. The review is all mine, no money changed hands, and they don't get to see or have this video before it is published. I do this to remain unbiased in my review. If the radio has any issues, I will point them out. This allows the manufactures, and distributors to address them.
@ The value of the item goes into my testing, and evaluation to the company. Not the production of any video. The company does not see this review before anyone else, or are they entitled to a review video. The review videos remain my property. If the company wants the test example back, I gladly send them back, but they have to be up front about it, because it takes time to learn, and test these things.
I got a question. Let’s assume this would be the only portable radio I own. I am shure it is fun to play around. And I would use this a lot. But in europe, more and more radios are switching to digital audio broadcast. War might break out, but natural catastrophes also increase. Why is there no radio that could do both? All frequencies, fine tuning etc. and also decode DAB(+)? Or outside of emergencies for better sound if I am nearby the station? This radio is clearly capable to stay informed via the few still working analogue stations. But the some already pulled the plug on fm and analogue am. Why does no emergency radio exist that lets me stay tuned under all circumstances?
How much would I expect to pay for this? Looks like 👍 the NEW 2025 model of radio 📻. It has a NICE backlight for ease of use at night 🌙, or in a darkened room. Can ya DX with it? Your friend, Jeff.

Sony still produces portable radios and radios, unlike the cassette Walkman.
❤ i had this same fantasy today. beautiful apple and android portables "dropping" once or twice a year
What are they going to do with all the digital signals? 😂
I got one of these in the backend of 2023. Superb bits of kit. Love mine!
Awesome. I hooked up my MLA-30 to it, and woah...it lit up :)
I have to say I have a radio problem. I’m buying radios like a kid in a candy store….great review Todderbert 💪💪

I picked up one of these last Summer. Really fun radio. Sitting on my desk right now. :)

If you have a powered magnetic loop do you connect to HF or 50ohm?
50ohm.
At 15:19, how did you access that call sign menu? Did this work for FM and AM too?
Enabled the FT8 function in the mode menu. I believe it is for the HF/AM band only.
Amazing , what is batter v2 or v5?
I don't have the V5, but the DSP2 is supposed to be similar to the DSP3 that the official team has made. Working hard at removing screen interference with different options. The best being the ability to turn off the display. Also remote mounting the antenna helps.

$400 a piece? Why didn't I buy 10 of these to give out as stocking stuffers!!!
Soweit nicht schlecht, aber ohne Antenne Grundrauschen auf HF mit S3 und auf VHF S9 ist eher nicht optimal. Liegt das am Schirm?
Not an optimal antenna setup, using the whip antenna with a long wire clipped to it that only goes to the inside of my basement window.
Yeah, the screen qrm is a big issue.
Without that it would deserve all the cheering.
The Icom Ic-705 hast the same issue. Any Antenna directly standing beside captures a lot of qrm from the screen.
@@C4H6As Ja das habe ich bei meinem IC-705 auch bemerkt, insbesondere auf UKW.
Yes, I noticed that with my IC-705 too, especially on VHF/UHF.
How to jailbreak it to get 380-403.3 MHz? Gaps are a deal-breaker for me; even if I don't know/don't care about what's in the gaps.
Not sure on that one. would be interested if the community has already hacked it to include the missing gap.

Where can I buy 🤔 the donut 🍩 antenna? Was it included with your radio 📻, or is it purchased separately? How much is it? Again, your friend, Jeff.
eBay has them cheap, around $8-$10.

If you use NiMH be shure you have the right fuse.
They are not interchangeable with alkalines (alkalines limit themselves)
Can you adjust the bandwith?
Yes, there are three bandwidth settings, wide, normal, and narrow. Each one can be full customized to your liking, by being able to set the low, and high thresholds.

Nice enough but too pricey given the screen noise problem. I couldn't get along with that.
