    Very nice, thank you for giving us some shutter actuations, they sound like pricision machines.

    How interesting. I have read on these & seen a few stills.
    This is the first time seeing them up close & personal. Thanks! It was a real treat.

    Excellent as usual. One more tidbit: The AP has "ASA" engraved on the top plate, while the S and the K don't, moved to the ASA ring itself.

    Thanks for clearing the differences up.
    7:01 Can you comment on the safety of the Super Takumar 50/1.4 with the Pentax K and earlier models? I know a few of the pre-Spotmatic later models with the flappy bit had problems with rear protrusion and mirror strike when using these lenses.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm. I haven't run into that. I used a number of later Takumar lenses on these including the 50mm 1/4, 17mm fisheye, and others. Those were SMC and Super Taks. I think that the Taks should all be fine as long as they're mounted correctly. The mirror should clear the pin since that's way out of the way at the bottom. If a mirror were going to hit the Tak pin, it would also hit the back of the mountain flange.
      Now, other makers' M42 lenses I can't comment on and if they have other appendages that could be an issue.

      My understanding is that the SuperTak 50 1.4 will protrude into the camera and may hit or jam with the auto pin push bar. Cameras like the SV(H3v) and S1a(H1a) had a mid cycle revision with reworked push bar to address this. They changed the color of the "R" in the rewind knob from green to orange to distinguish them.

      @@tatocorvette I remember it this way: "The Super Tak 50/1.4 is radioactive, and Greens don't like nuclear."

    I have recently picked up an S3. I have many manual SLR's from the 1970's onwards (exception is my Nikon F) including the Pentax MX, ME, Olympus OM1, OM2 and Nikon F3. None of these other cameras have quite the same precision feel and sound of the wind on and shutter release. Someone has referred to the sound as being like working a rifle bolt. It is quite similar to the Kodak Retina 11c and 111c which is interesting because they and the early Pentax's all date from around the same time.

    Can't remember exactly, but I have one of these early Asahi Pentax Spotmatic with light meter.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the S1/2/3 was the first body that could mount a light meter, but don't quite me on that.

    • @protestagain
      @protestagain 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidHancock The camera body is stowed away, but it has a light meter on top. Search more about it, think it said 1961. Ain't sure. It' might be one of those really early ones.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1961 would be an H/S series, like the 1a/2/3 body. They look almost identical. After I release the video manuals for the S and K later this week or early next, in the next round of recording I'll be making videos for the S/H2 and S2 Super.

    Good comparison but you could have 3 K Cameras and they would all sound different depending on use lubrication and service history..

    I'm told the S is the rarest at probably less than 5000 made ?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I understand.

    • @Democratiser
      @Democratiser 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Correct, however, I think there are even fewer black body versions of the AP produced. So that version tends to sell for quite a bit more $ than the S.

  • @MP40meatballTR

    Is the SV model the most modern from this series?

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of these three, the K would be the one released last. The SV was part of the following series sold as the "S" series in most countries, the "H" series in the U.S. The SV is, I think, also the H3V and of its series it is the best.

      @standandeliver8376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've just acquired an SV myself. Identical body styling, with the exposed metal flanges either side of the vertical lines of the mirror box. So much nicer looking than the Spotmatic in my opinion. The SV has fast and slow shutter speeds together on one non-rotating top dial, giving a clean front look. It also has a self timer around the rewind crank. It feels like a real quality product (as I'm sure the cameras featured here are). The film advance mechanism is so much nicer than say, the Miranda D or Olympus OM1, which I also own.

    Asahi Optical in all their publications never called this camera AP. I think the misunderstanding arose from several publications showing the EYE with the letters A and P. Still they used the same in later models, so calling the camera AP may sound smooth, but it is not correct.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GerjanvanOosten it's an acronym, and those are just fine.
