      @@sbmatt That is why anybody who buys a ticket can also buy a pit pass. Seeing an event live is so much netter than watching one on TeeVee..
      You will find out just how poor TeeVee is as a substitute for reality.
      That Nitric Acid burning through your nostrils, combined with the stench of Sulfur in the air, along with the sound that shakes both the ground and the stands just cannot be mimicked through a TeeVee Set.
      The closest that can be synthesized to it is by throwing a chunk of copper into a vat of Nitric Acid,, while burning some rubber, and then inhaling those combined fumes, with your stereo blasting a recording of engine noise...and doing all of that during a Magnitude 5 earthquake...when you are at the epicenter .
      Yeah. Pretty much nothing can match the sensation of a Funny Car tearing down a dragstrip..
      (Edit...No.. I am not being hyperbolic. There is no hyperbole in that previous metaphorical description....eh...well...maybe a Magnitude 4 while you are at the epicenter..).

      @GeneSun I don't mean this negatively but setting up the show, doing this 10 times over the course of a w/e and tearing it all down and packing it all into the trailer to head off to the next town must go through "mechanics" at an unbelievable rate. I don't care how much you love it, constantly on the asphalt, breathing nitro all the time, and doing work like this under so much pressure you just have to toss body panels out of the way would certainly take the fun out of working on a TF car. Side Note: I was a crew member for a few years of an open wheel race car that traveled the country when I was younger and that was "Tough" setting it all up, a little car maintenance between sessions and tearing it down to goto the next town but nothing like this madness. And... back then I dreamed of working on TF, HA!! Glad I DIDNT, as a result I still Love "experiencing" TF in person. Thank Y'all for the work you do to make it possible for me to get "hit in the chest" when they go by

    the worst thing about racing is the mechanics are the real heroes of the sport and nobody ask for their autographs without them racing would not happen. SO GIVE THE HEROS BEHIND THE SCENES THE GLORY AND KUDOS THEY DESERVE.

    • @TMouse-hd5jb
      @TMouse-hd5jb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I would. I would burn their ears off with questions and praise for their achievements, and then ask them for their autographs. They really deserve all the credit they can get. These mechanics are the reason the Force family are a family name known for excellence! It is the same praise that is not given to concert riggers. The performers get all the credit and TV time, but the riggers are what make those performers look and sound good just like these mechanics make John Force look, sound, and above all, drive as well as he does!

      Many years ago at a Dallas national event I found a side window from Force's car. ( might have been 1998ish and there was rain. delays and parking was a mess, I was a sportsman racer so had really good access and found the window in the trash at the backup pit area used). My girl friend at the time knew a crew member on Force's team, so I asked for every team member's autograph. Coil, Bernie, all of them. Even Force himself. He gave me a very strange look when he signed the window as he was the final name on the glass. To this day I kick myself in the butt I gave the window to my girlfriends son...

      Been the done that. Bottom end mechanic isn't a fun life. The off time where spent setting specs a blueprinting everything so these rebuilds could happen this fast.
      Basically there's a complete engine assembly inside thats been setup to match all the way from balancing to bearing gaps. Lifters are even fully blueprinted. Lots of work happens behind the scenes.
      When that car rolls in we have everything needed to overhaul almost everything.

    I'm a sports car guy. I go to the IMSA, SCCA, and SCDA races at my local track. (Lime Rock Park) I drive a souped up little Miata that's in the barn for the Winter. I have never really understood that peculiar American invention; the drag race. However, I stand in dumb-struck awe of NHRA mechanics. For my money, they are the real wizards on race day.
    Adendum; John Force has more money invested in torque wrenches than I do in my whole tool kit.

    So much of my life's best memories has been attending drag racing events across Europe and the US. Like this, I'd just stand there in awe and watch these guys tear the motor down and rebuild it., then run from crew to crew as they leak test and set the motor for the next run. They say smell can trigger memories, for me, the sound of the ratchet gun, a blower spinning up before engine fire up, and the change in sound the engine makes when it switches over to nitro......always bring an automatic smile and takes me back :-) Thanks for posting!

  • @davidvincent1093

    I have built many a motor and trans in my life as well as install them (when I was young, dumb and full of it)But to watch these pros tear down and build up a 1000 hp motor in just under 30 minutes is amazing. And to see that there are around 8 guys on it at any one time makes it even more wonderful to see. These guys have it times down so perfect that as soon as one side of the motor gets done with a tool they just hand it off to the other side that is waiting for the same tool. That is not to say they were "waiting" it was just a matter of a few seconds of a wait. I just wish I could have seen the blower tear down and rebuild since that has to be an even better precision build than the rest of the engine. My truck has bi turbos that I tore down and built back up this year and even with only 1 person to do the job it still took ME 2 days to get it right. It is going to be a sad day in racing when the FORCE family retires someday as they have a lot of talent that they "new/young" drivers could learn from. Whom ever made the video you also did 1 hell of a job there was not a lot missed during the filming. All in all thank you for a great 30 minutes of excitement and great job

      John has been grooming the next generations of the Force family for years. 3 of his 4 daughters are racers (granted Ashley and Brittany are semi retired to raise their kids), his son in law Robert, and 3 of his grandkids are moving up through the ranks in the Junior Dragster class. Once John eventually retires (which it looks like it will not be any time soon) the future of JFR should be very secure. Oh yeah, let's not forget about Austin Prock, the son of long time JFR crew chief Jimmy Prock added to the mix.

    There's nothing worse than the morons who stand and holler at every driver when they are trying to work. This is their job and you are watching. John and his family/drivers are some of the nicest and most approachable drivers in the sport and make themselves available more than anybody else for promotions and signatures. When they are working let them work, they will sign and shake hands on their time, not on your time they need to be working.

      an you missed being rude, just because you yell out a drivers name does not mean they will drop what they are doing to notice you. Those drivers (and that is all of them) need to be weary of the people around them, but more important the need to get back to their quiet room to question and review what just has happened and how to change the out come.
      You can meet and great before and after a race but leave them alone to get their race plan over in their head and don't press your luck

    we don't show it here but, in the truck they have a x-ray scanner for used parts. if it's not fragilized/cracked, the part is cleaned up, measured and go back in the shop with a sticker on it stipulating the new measurements. they swap pistons and cylinder walls depending of what they have kept in the shop. they use new parts only if necessary. crazy.

    First time I ever went to an NHRA top fuel event was as a kid at Raceway Park in Indy. I was hanging out around the Force area watching them do their refreshes between runs. There was a huge crowd and I was in the back trying to take pictures and couldn't get any. When they fired the engine, everyone scattered like rats. I'm thinking... "you sissies! No I can run up there and get pictures!".
    I didn't get any pictures. That day I learned what the gas mask is for.
    APPARENTLY, they run nitro on the test fires too. My dad was laughing his ass off at me the whole time. hehehe
    So at least I can say that John Force once tried to kill me.

    Very interesting to watch a team of pros work on an engine like that; they all work in conjunction, and every movement seems to have a purpose relevant only to the objective. Like surgeons operating. If you don't watch carefully, you miss the guys working underneath the car; are they replacing the crankshaft?

  • @wheelitzr2
    @wheelitzr2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    If they still have this same crew doing things exactly the same way I can definitely see why he has had so many engine failures lately. The Piston had scaring but decided to keep that sleeve, the two guys setting valve lash have 2 completely different styles, oh and the torque wrench does no good if you rattle the head bolts to over the torque spec with the gun before attempting to use the torque wrench. I mean the guy just stands on each stud with the gun in no real order and the torque wrench just clicks and doesn't even turn any amount to do so. I know they are in a hurry but it won't take 10,000 HP with garbage technique like that.

    Amazing how efficient and fast the crew is on John Forces car between Dragstrip runs. You really have to know what you are doing to do this kind of work after every Dragstrip run. Allot of stuff goes on between the actual 3-4 second drag race itself.
    At this level of drag racing. I wonder how much money it takes to do rebuilds every entire dragstrip event. I guess if you have to ask how much it costs to do Funny Cars, you can't afford it.
