WANNA SOUND LIKE METALLICA…

  • In this video, I’ll show you how to blend a turbo overdrive into the metal zone to get Metallica’s tone. Is not exact, but it’s pretty close.
I was surprised how clean and sharp the metal zone cleaned up with the turbo overdrive.
This is a boss OD-2 turbo overdrive pedal
You get these on eBay for anywhere from $50-$60
Same thing with the metal zone. You could get these for under 60-70 dollars on eBay.
Definitely look on marketplace for these petals. You don’t have to spend a lot to get a nice tone.
The Waze craft petals are a little more expensive. I would have to say they’re not really worth it. The other custom setting that they have it’s not that great.
Thank you guys so much for watching.

The metal core pedal is more versatile if you’re using an amp like that than the metal zone btw. the Metallica sound comes from Mesa and specif cabinets with celestions, emgs might help control the feedback from the gain. Also I know James would take all the mids down to 0

Things people are not taking into account:
camera audio - this setup probably sounds pretty damn spot on in the room.
the MT-2 came out in 1992. It was made for kids with cheap, bad sounding amps to replace the super bad OD channels, if there were any. As such, the signal levels, load impedance, and overall EQ characteristics were all designed to be run into the front end preamp section of a clean guitar range amp, like a JC-120 or ohhh I dunno, maybe a Fender. This worked all the way down to your CRATE and Gorillas, because even they could manage a mostly flat clean channel. (and to be fair, by 92 CRATE were making some decent stuff under SLM, a lot of it being essentially the same as Ampeg, with different names and cosmetics. Like the CRATE GX-130C and Ampeg VH-140C, 99% the same amp.) Anyway:
The MT-2 (and most if not all other Distortion pedals) of that time were replacements for the gain and tone shaping section of the overall "rig". But they were designed to go into the front end, so the signal level is comparatively low. It will not drive a power amp or FX return efficiently.
This also means an OD/boost in front of it does exactly what it would do in front of any gain/tone shaping preamp, boosts gain, tightens up lows, does whatever else the OD/Boost is set to. It is completely viable to boost an MT-2 and it is viable to boost WITH an MT-2.
Honestly, even talking about putting a distortion anywhere BUT into the front of an amp or into additional pedals and then into the front of an amp seems crazy in relation to the MT-2, which was made at a time when you couldnt put it anywhere else. Even in the fledgling modellers of the time, od was always before distortion and distortion was always before everything else. All the modern digital "put anything anywhere" stuff is great, but it is not an accurate representation of how most of the old gear was even capable of running.
So we have here a clean Fender amp. An MT-2 boosted by an OD-2. A Duncan Invader? or maybe DiMarzio Super Distortion? Either way its a high output pup. Scooped dial job.
All of this is correct, and again my guess is that in the room it sounds very close to a GP sort of somewhere between Justice and Black Album tone.
Get a 57/421 setup happenniing to better represent the tone in videos.
I used to do a super low rent version of this BTW, with an OD-1 and Arion Metal Master, but into my dad's old SUNN Model T 100W and oooold Ampeg V4 cab. Sterilizing levels of noise but goddang the tone was ridiculous in 1989. And I could absolutely split some wigs with the volume. You dont even know about that 6550 power section man, like I'd drown out the FOH with stage volume.

This is such great information. Thank you so much for giving us knowledge. In this day and age.
I was born in 1985 I didn’t start playing guitar until 2005 so everything you talked about. Something I did not know.
Going forward in this conversation. I really don’t understand why it’s bad to put the pedals in front of the amp. Why people always get upset of how you choose your liking.
This video wasn’t supposed to sound exactly like Metallica, It was just supposed to get you close to that sound.
I appreciate the knowledge that you laid down here. And definitely be trying to track down some of these amps. That you talk about.
But I really don’t think it matters what amp you have . It all comes down to The Speaker. That you have in the amp.
But I definitely got a lot of hate on this video. And I really don’t get it.
I don’t understand why people go out of their way . To say you should’ve done it this way. Or it doesn’t sound good. Rather than saying nothing.
My mama always told me if you have nothing. Nice to say. Say nothing.
And I don’t mean you I appreciate your comment.
For the last couple days, I was trying to think of how to respond to it. And I hope this gives some insight who I am.
Because of the end of the day, I just want people to come on the journey with me check out something.

I had lots of funs playing Kill em all and so on.Try to set it up before your boost, or else you are going to end up sounding like shit, like on this video xd no offense. I appreciate you. Right on man. I played with the metal zone when I started playing music. I haven’t found something quite like it yet. I understand that people either love it or hate it just like fight club. I don’t get offended easily. So it’s OK for you to say what you feel. But I ask you. What do you think the 5 best petals out there? To get thrash metal sounds. On a budget. my main focus is for people to get the sounds they want for not spending a whole Lotta money. Plus the way I like to dial in the sound for me. I like to have a clean amp. And I like to use pedals to control the sounds. And if you’re running through a computer. I mean that whole set up. is gonna cost you about $1500 just to get started. At least for me i want a Mac air computer. But right now money is really tight specially in America. People don’t have enough money. These days. $100 at the grocery store. Gets you a bag of groceries. But I do really love this comment. So you have a good week. Hope you check out the new video that I’m about to drop on Monday. Cheers from California :)
