  • A very enjoyable morning session spent at the rather unique station of St Johns on the South Eastern Mainline where we see plenty of services from Southeastern.
Theres a fair amount of history associated with this station, I shan't go through it all but I'll try and get the important parts covered where I can.
The station was opened in 1873 by the South Eastern Railway and was named after the nearby church that was built in 1855, interestingly they were locked in a bitter feud with the London, Chatham and Dover Railway how had also built and opened their station at Lewisham Road which was located adjacent to the church. So both stations were essentially cannibalising one another with its catchment area.
This station has unfortunately seen its share of tragedy when in 1898 two trains collided in the station as a result of the signaller allowing a train to head into the station when another one was already in the platform. The result of this being that 3 people were killed in the accident.
In 1899 the South Eastern Railway and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway put their differences to one side and merged together to form the South Eastern and Chatham Railway.
In 1906 a new junction was built just north of Hither Green and a junction located immediately to the south of the station.
In 1921 the station came under the occupation of the Southern Railway because of the Railways Act 1921 which created the Big Four railway companies around the UK.
In 1926 the railway line was electrified for operation from London Charing Cross and Cannon Street to Orpington.
In 1948 the station came under the operation of British Railways Southern Region.
In 1957 there was another accident at the station when two trains collided south east of the station on the mainline bypassing Lewisham, which sadly brought down the Lewisham-Nunhead bridge which resulted in the deaths of 90 people, further disaster was averted when a third train was coming along and luckily the driver stopped the train in plenty of time. Luckily the line speed through this area was a factor in this.
Further work was taken out throughout the next few years to remodel the station and track layout to create the area that we are seeing throughout this film.
My next station will be New Cross.

Very enjoyable video Jarred. The Cannon Street circulars are announced as heading to Slade Green when heading away from Cannon Street shortly after departing, with via Bexleyheath or Woolwich Arsenal to denote whether it's a clockwise or an anti-clockwise circular service. When will you next film a lot of videos that won't feature Southeastern at all? We've had a lot of Southeastern recently, we probably need a break for a little while

At St Johns, not to get confused with St John's Wood on the London Underground Jubilee Line!

That's a busy Southeastern Mainline right there! Is the journey on this series towards London Cannon Street, London Charing Cross or London Victoria?
