Jascha Heifetz: God's Fiddler

  • Not since Paganini had there been such a magician on the violin. The first modern violin virtuoso, about whom Itzhak Perlman says in the film, 'When I spoke with him, I thought, "I can't believe it. I'm talking with God".' A musical wunderkind, he went on to set the standard in violin playing for nearly a century. This film portrays an artist for whom only perfection would do, so well known in popular culture that his name became shorthand for excellence for everyone from Jack Benny, to The Muppets, to Woody Allen. Heifetz was a legendary but mysterious figure whose story embodies the dual nature of artistic genius: the paradox of how a mortal man lives with immortal gifts- gifts he must honor, but which extract a life long price. Is the man and the artist the same person? What is the price each pays? And who was the man behind the music? Released on DVD, EuroArts 2058538.

I met Heifetz on an elevator at UCLA in 1971; he had a violin case and was wearing a hat, so I did not recognize him at first. Whes somebody told me: "meet Jasha Heifetz" I almost fainted!!!!............It was 43 years ago and I still remember that day.

not really. heifetz understood that the instrument must remain absolutely stable if you are going to have consistent bowing and intonation. his musicality is non existent, his vibrato sounds like a dentist drill - basically he was just a scale-apeggio machine who sounded like he hated music. that being said, however, the mechanics of how he locked the instrument down show him to be one of the first to understand the necessity of violin stability.

+Sandy Grungerson -- How can you talk such a nonsense, do you have no hearing? Heifetz has more feeling in the fingernail than others in the whole body !!!! It's just perfect, he was and is for all time

I don't understand how anyone could call him a cold player. I'm a violinist and his interpretation of the Mendelssohn violin concerto makes me cry everytime with its utter beauty. I love rock music etc., actually I love most kinds of music from many, many countries, but I fell in love with classical music and the violin when I was not much older than 5. I begged for nearly a year for violin lessons apparently, and my parents made me wait because they thought it was something I would forget about and want to move on to something else, but I was obviously completely serious about it.
Oh, and I've got to say, never mind how incredibly fast and accurate his finger work was...that bowing...just incredible, such skill.

heifeitz, during these years, a lot of people misunderstood heifeitz. For his passion transcends into his violin and bow, his heat does not needed to be interpreted by his words or emotions, he always was stray at his emotions, like what they say, ''he's a student of god", the value of a piece of gold will always shine, no matter how harsh and cruel the environment is, for heifeitz is a true master, that one day everyone shall reveal his passionate form that people sincerely love.
