(From the St Ives Times and Echo 20 October 2017) Wharf Road was closed off for about an hour on Tuesday morning (October 17) while firefighters dealt with a small kitchen fire in the Harbour Fish and Chips restaurant. Crews were called to the site just before 11 a.m. with support appliances from Hayle and Penzance also attending in the Fire Service’s well-run plan to swamp and contain the potential spread of a fire, however small, in St Ives’ tight and complex streets. On arrival the restaurant’s staff had contained the fire and fire-fighters finished and carried out checks to the property to make sure everything was extinguished. The Fire & Rescues Service’s Area Manager for Service Delivery, Kathryn Billing, praised the Harbour’s staff on Twitter, commenting: ‘Well done to staff for deploying wet chemicals and full evacuation. Good fire safety saves lives.’’
