Switchback is the first and only ARTICULATED DRUM SPINNER in Battlebots.
Greg Needel is the Team Captain of Switchback, and he invited the Skorpios crew down to Dallas to take an inside look of their robot. Greg tells us the idea behind the Articulated Drum, some changes he's making for the next season of Battlebots, and shows us deep inside the manufacturing facility that makes the robot, and inside the robot itself!

MY Fav about the Switch back is that how they evolve so quickly as a team and a whole evolution of their bot and it became 10x better, mostly when our projects have lot of flaws or thing dont work we dont keep it up, but what makes u real engineers and people that we learn from a mistakes and get better.
You are right, I do feel the same.
My favorite part of Switchback is the fact that they are such a latge part of the robotics community and it doesn't stop in the large weight class of combat robotics. They continue to give accessibility to younger and newer teams as well as those who need funding by running an organization based on giving parts on a cheap, but competition ready level.
I have met him in person at an event in Colorado a couple of years back and he is as great in person as he is in the video.
Back to the robot, it is one of my favorite and dual-color chasis with black is so good. The articulated drum is so cool in the fact that if it works as intended, there is no defense! Drums oftentimes win against other types of vertical spinners and the fact that vertical spinners usually beat horizontals also helps. When it first came out I was so excited because it was one of the fun and wacky ideas and it definitely showed it belonged with the pack.
From a mentor in FIRST and current 3lb beetleweight builder(that I haven't finished yet), THANK YOU for everything you both do for the robotics community.

As a First Alum and Mentor to two teams, my favorite part of switchback is showing the team switchback and seeing their reaction. It's like that Leonardo Dicaprio pointing meme. I got one of my students to build a fairyweight bot during the offseason this year because of it lol.
Gotta say I love how Switchback is evolving as time goes on. The difference between its first appearance and its second was staggering and thinking about it makes me excited to see what's next
I love switch back because of how they went from season six, went 1-2 had a lot of issues with the robot, then they come back in season 7 with a full redesign, go 3-1 and make the round of 32, that just means that they are dedicated to making the robot as best as they can and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for season 7. My favorite pop tart is cookies and cream.
We think the best thing about any BattleBots team is the team themselves! We also love that Switchback brought a unique weapon. It’s been fun n to watch them learn and evolve!
I’m proud to say there is no Battlebots fan who works closer to the producers of Switchback than I do. Really, there’s just one row of warehouses between Rev and where I work!
My favorite thing about the bot is its team. While tours of the warehouse are exceptionally rare, the members are often behind any watch party in the DFW area.
I love the unique design and the really strong spinner. An egg beater like that works so well at beetleweights, and Switchback just proves that it works in BattleBots too.
Man, Switchback is one of my favorite bots of all time. That articulating arm is just so cool and really helps set them apart from other verts and eggbeaters.
My favorite part is just the pure original idea. Personally love a drum spinner and seeing it be pretty effective in its second season. The invasion is great and who cannot love the team’s spirit and energy!
The design is my favorite part of Switchback. Being able to put together an articulated Spinner as large as the one they use is very impressive. Not to mention it had a major glow up in between seasons as that spinner seemed to be a lot more effective in the recent season compared to their rookie season! I'm looking forward to seeing what kinds of upgrades they bring to future seasons of BB that they may be in.
My fave part about switchback is that they are one of those designs that combine fun/creative together with competetive! Shows that not all succesful designs have to be standard 4wd verts, they had a great season with their upgrades and cant wait to see them back in WC8!
I think the best thing about switchback is there ingenuity with the design. There are very few teams trying new metas and robot types and switchback alongside orbitron looks to be setting the field on notice.
My favorite part of switchback is, it's like the honey badger... It don't care. Vert, horizontal, flipper.. he's just gonna keep on coming at you. To me he feels like Gruff if gruff had an articulating drum spinner. The bot has the BEEF!
My favorite part of switchback is how unique it is compared to other 4wd verts. It is an eggbeater but it is on an arm which gives it so much more personality than your average eggbeater drum. (Also I immediately knew that the part was from the shredit match I’ve watched it to many times😂)

If I would choose a favorite thing about Switchback it will definitely be the articulate drumspinner!!! It's so impressive and I think it could be a big threat in the future era of battlebots

it often seems there is little innovation happening in the battlebots meta (i know there is but a lot of it is hidden to us casual viewers) but in comes switchback with a wildly different take on drummer spinners and it is awesome to see something that initially seemed more like a gimmick bot suddenly becoming highly competetive. oh and orange rocks!

I used to hear a lot about REV on the group page, beginner type stuff. Very cool.
What i love abot team switchback is rev. They are from my home state and i have met many students that have gone far in both the stem and robotics in general just cause of rev. Not to mention they made a reall cool BattleBot
My favourite thing about Switchback is absolutely the uniqueness of it - they're literally the only articulating drum bot/hammerdrum/whatever-drum bot in the field, there's no one else like them, and being unique on Battlebots is one of the most important things to stand out in the field.
I take a lot of inspiration from Switchback's ethos in being unqiue and standout, as I'm developing a robot/weapon style never before seen in robot combat - a full body flipper! One day I hope to have my dream realised and getting to fight Switchback would be amazing!

This team like many others have so much passion for the sport and have used their platform to enrich the lives of students in Texas and all over the country with their involvement in FRC. And their robot has some really cool design and branding

Hey, I’ll take a crack at the giveaway.
My favorite part about Switchback is the Switch-Up/Surprise factor.
I actually didn’t realize this until rewatching that his weapon could do a Matt-weapon-reversal on Whiplash, so that surprised me when I saw it.
The part of the Switch-Up idea is the weapon. With how smaller it is to say a Minotaur, you might not think it could do something super nasty, but then you watch Switchback vs Hijinx, where he literally decapitated Hijinx of her blade. The design also felt as a complete Switch-Up to the S6 design for S7, because it looked more maneuverable than their old design.
So yeah, there’s my story I guess lol.
My favorite part of Switchback is how they changed their weapon through crowd design, really cool idea that allows everyone to make a new idea that eventually ends up on TV!

I love the versatility of Switchback’s weapon. Most robots generally attack the top armor or the sides. The fact that switchback can do both impresses me.
My favorite part about switchback was it's massive glow up. It went from a kind of gimmick looking bot to a T-shirt / Poster tier robot between seasons and I wasn't expecting it to be as dramatic of a change as it was.
I do LOVE Smores Pop Tarts, as it was my favorite. The one thing I like Switchback is how UNIQUE that it can articulate the heavy drum spinner high and low. Also orange is my favorite color and Switchback is orange.
By the cube rule, poptarts have the supportive starch around the filling. With it on 6 sides, that makes it a calzone.
my favourite thing about Switchback is the Weapon which is very clever and unique and both versions had some good hits with it,my favourite was against Hijinx that launched it's bar spinner like a Sky Daaaancer or HELIKOPTER HELIKOPTER^^
Personally what makes switchback great to me is that they change the bottom paint to say something different for when they are flipped each fight. Also can’t be against since it was one of the first bits I saw fight live in its fight against HUGE.

Love how Switchback adapted from one season to the next. On their first season they seemed very "meh" and overcomplicated on some things (like the multi-piece weapon that was suppose to adapt to the opponent by removing or adding blades). But they quickly evolved into a way better bot. The weapon, the lifting arm, the drivetrain. I see them becoming a great team when they start ironing out of those small issues everyone encounters as they go through seasons. The weapon now seems very scary.

I like battlebots
I do love the idea of swerve drive in Battlebots, but as they pointed out, it's more complexity. Shatter! and Ominous have great drives, but the mecanum/roller wheels are limited in traction by nature of the design. Swerve might be the ticket.

Anyone know the tv dates when season starts yet? This is the only thing I wish the owners of BB would fix. Make it loud and clear on dates for everything, even ball park dates are fine. Cheers to all Bots this coming season❤️💕❤️💕❤️❤️💕❤️💕❤️
They gave ballpark dates. August 2023. Then lots of things happened that they couldn't control (Formula 1 in Vegas, Discovery channel merger, etc).
They only own the show. They don't choose when a TV station wants to order a season.
THE ARM.
Switchback is DEAD to me, you do not lose to swamp thing and expect to have your reputation intact. It's not as bad as losing to rampage but it's definitely up there.
