    In my quest to build the most reliable marble clock ever I went and built a rotary cam marble selector, 15 cam disks a spur gear reduction with a beveled set to change the rotation plane and lots and lots of 3D printed parts to make which I hope will be the solution to all my marble selection problems.
    I went back to glass marbles and something I don't mention in the video is that I like way more the sound of the glass marbles knocking. It is a little bit like music.

    This really undersells how AMAZING that cam stack is! For those who didn't catch it, the fifteen cams are all different because the shape of each number is "written" on the cam stack, which the marble selectors then "read" the same way a phonograph reads a wax cylinder. That means there are 20 positions encoded on each disc; 10 white or black positions which control what color marble that track uses for each digit, then another 10 release positions between them which allow the selected marble to drop.

      The amazing thing to me is how he put them all together for prototyping. I'd have just printed it all in single barrel instead of individual discs and would have had to reprint the whole thing if I messed one up. Granted he did say he had to print them all again but then after that was just some fine sanding to perfect.

      @@EkiToji you are not alone in that approach, I have lost count of the number of engineering interns all the way up through senior engineers who would design large prototype parts like this as a single piece with zero adjustability or opportunity to replace sections when an issue is discovered.
      After several such issues with my own designs I have changed my process to, "design as though something is wrong with your design but you don't know what it is yet."
      It takes longer initially, and sometimes is "wasted" effort, but it usually winds up saving a lot of time and headaches when troubleshooting a new design...
      Once the prototype is working well, THEN you go in and combine pieces together to simplify future versions.

      I wonder if it would be possible to make one color glass and the other color steel, which would make separating them from each other a cinch. (Magnets!)
      Then again, at least for the one second update display, I'm not sure the black marbles really need to be there at all. Just send the white ones. For the next digit over that only changes once every ten seconds, sure, use two colors as usual. But on the high frequency display, only using white marbles means it can send them back to itself without sorting. The sorter is probably fast enough to keep up with one change every 10 seconds. I'm not sure it's fast enough to keep up with a change every second.

    I love how what is seemingly an over-complicated contraption is actually the most efficient way to achieve your goals: that's engineering, baby! Would it be worth building a device that sorts marbles by dimension so that you don't have to go in with calipers and do it yourself? Chicken eggs are sized by machines that have rails with different gaps between them so the right sizes go in the right bins- perhaps 3D printing a jig that you can dump marbles into like a coin sorter would make it more viable to get the huge number of marbles you need to fill and maintain this machine. Amazing work!

      The answer to "would it be worth" is in comparing the time it takes to sort by hand to the time it takes to create sorter. Also, creating sorter would mean a new video, so more content, which is a plus. On the other hand, you need to sort millions of eggs every day, so engineering an egg sorter will increase your "time profit" with time, while here he will sort a limited number of marbles, so "time profit" is limited.
      If I was in his place, I would do it for the sake of content itself, but it is his channel and his time is spent on it, so he is the one to make the decision what is worth to him and what he wants to do.

    • @Jehty_
      @Jehty_ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't get why he decided to sort by hand.

      I think he should do this for the once-a-second digit, so that it won't run out of sorted marbles (it would just have its own collection tray and feed back into itself). The sorter can probably keep up with the other five digits. The nice part is that he doesn't have to redesign anything, just don't load any black marbles. It will still go through the motions of trying to send a black marble, but that's harmless.

    We all have talents in different areas. I am so thankful for the inspiration that comes in software engineering for me. I am amazed nonetheless by the inspiration or design that comes to you in mechanical engineering. Maybe that comes a little by experience too, just doing the stuff we do until it becomes something we can create with plus the University degree. Anyways, if I get a chance it would be fun to design more in Industrial Design which I think you do some as well since it isn't just parts and unsightly prints of default mechanisms. In all, I think I'm just talking about something I heard of as design thinking.

    I love the decision to go with a single motor, it's much more "clockworky" this way. Also, cam wheels are awesome!

    When this is all done, I hope this whole design gets put into a museum somewhere with the right resources to keep it running. It needs to be on display somewhere for sure.

    The mechanism is mesmerizing.
    You should rebuild the entire clock with it, it would be huge and works really well with the all mechanical aspect of the thing.

    I feel like you don't actually need black marbles if you're feeding the display from the rear. You needed black marbles on the minutes clock to act as spacers because the rows are fed from the side, but here you're feeding from the rear. Eliminating the need to sort white from black, and make channels that can select which color to feed, should make it a lot simpler.

    • @tin2001
      @tin2001 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably.... But it keeps it consistent in the noises it makes, which for a huge display clock like this is part of the point of it.
