I have a 2017 Ford Fusion Energi. Like many other hybrids the engine does not have an alternator but has two electric motors in the transmission. One electric motor is used to drive the car the other is smaller and is used to start the engine and generate electricity to recharge the hybrid battery pack. All the 12v battery is used for is to power all the regular electronics that do not use high voltage. So when the car is on the 12v is being charged by the high voltage battery system.
Great explanation. I'd add though thst of the 12v is drained then the vehicle does not start and it can be charged or boosted from under the hood or directly in the trunk behind the carpeting were the battery, if I recall correctly, can be found
@@Johnnyscarcarereviews Yes if the battery does die you would jump it through either location but I believe in the Ford owners manual they prefer doing it through the engine bay. I don't mean any of this in a mean way just wanted to let you know how the Ford Fusion Hybrid/Energis work
Toyota Hybrid Vehicles do not have an Alternator or Starter. The 12 Volt battery runs the electronics. Toyota Hybrids have a voltage converter that steps down the High Voltage from the Traction Battery to charge the 12 Volt battery. In the Prius, the charging rate is 4 amps/hr. Driving the vehicle to charge the 12 V battery is a waste of time and fuel. All you need to do is Start the vehicle, turn off all accessories and lights, and let it sit with the Ready Light On. If your 12 Volt battery is totally discharged, it can take several hours to fully charge. The engine will only run when the High Voltage Battery needs to be charged, so it won't run that often. Avoid the temptation to charge the 12 Volt battery using a more powerful charger, unless you want to damage the battery. A replacement will cost $300 or more, so it's best to not do it. There are a lot of "experts" on TH-cam who offer bad advice. It's wise to check several sources. When in doubt, check WeberAuto th-cam.com/channels/tr07mdKhsUwVJjL8Kw_q5A.html
I just put in heat mode and lowest fan mode . So the engine charge hybrid battery as well as heating. It must be in H1. And hybrid battery come to almost full for a cold engine and same time the converter charge the 12 vdc car battery. When i go abroad for 5months car only forward reverse run... Just in garrage to avoid tyre flat spot.
You are indeed correct! The Fusion has no alternator but a converter from the big battery to the 12v converts power DC to DC. Thank you for the assistance.
In Toyota cars, the 12V battery is charged by a DC-DC converter from the HV battery anytime the system is in the READY mode. You don't need to be driving to charge the 12V battery.
Hi There. I have a 2017 Prius PHV Plug in hybrid. A number of people have attempted to charge the low voltage battery and have blown the high voltae regulator. Surly it would be advantaageos to icolate the battery teminals first? Cheers.
I have a 2012 Camry Hybrid XLE and now, 10 years post new, I have the original battery. I have never checked it, never charged it and certainly don’t trickle charge it, despite living in a very cold climate (Yukon) and seldom driving it more than 15 km a day. I am totally mystified by the angst here. Relax, drive the car and enjoy life.
@Jonny good idea for the jumper. Here it gets dangerously cold in the winter so there is some stress with being stuck outside after the job when the business has locked there doors
that's insane.. we have had to replace our 2014.5 camry hybrid 12v battery a few years ago, and if it sites for a few days it needs charged.. has 120k miles.

@@retiredat44 Well, Steve, I don't know where you live ... maybe it's too hot. Since I wrote that post I replaced the battery (not that I needed to just for caution because the winters here see winter temperatures of -40 every winter (-40 happens to be the temperature where Celsius an Fahrenheit are the same) and it isn't healthy to get stranded in it. The original 2012 Toyota battery is sitting on a trickle charger and I use it for electrolysis rust removal. I could have left it in the car.
wondering why the manufacturer is not smart enough to keep to 12v battery topped off using the big, honking hybrid battery. Why let the 12v battery die and create an ultimate bad experience for its customers when the car can't start? Why make it harder and less convenient to own the car by requiring an external battery charger?
After boosting the car i got in and the hybrid battery was not empty...so great point. I wonder if its an issue with power conversion from big high voltage battery to the small 12volt battery?
exactly after owning a camry hybrid for 9 years, I think of why didn't they want the customers of Toyota to have a decent battery setup? the 12v has been a pia since the original $500 12v Pansonic battery went bad after 5 years, and they dealer could not find a replacement had to go find one...

This is not really true in the 2024 Honda CRV Hybrid model. The engine does not have a separate starter motor and instead uses the motor/generator unit which gets its power from the Hybrid battery pack, and does not use the 12 volt battery to start the engine.
I've burnt through a few NOCO genius battery charger and booster packs at work. However my motormaster 2amp.slow charger is now over 15 years old and still holds strong. I even had it under a 2.3l mustang hood for an entire winter...outside. Good as new as I charged my mustang Gt with it 2x this spring
Very easily charged from the trunk but better to boost it from under the hood. Even electric vehicles have a 12 volt battery but it is the big batteries job to charge the 12 volt

Exactly. Especially that Fusion hybrid in that video.
Do they have generators?
Thank you for the help. You are indeed correct they have a converter DC to DC that converts power from the big battery to the 12v
Indeed they actually do in a form other then what you are used to looking at . Usually it’s a permanent magnet or generator

Most importantly, you didn't show the steps on how to connect and charge the battery
