What advice would you give to someone interested in taking the route of working in a level 1 trauma center before applying? Is it impossible to get in? Or just harder with more limited options?

Hi there! The "level" of the hospital isn't as important as the acuity; you're going to want to be getting the sickest of the sick patients. If you're not regularly seeing ventilators, vasoactive drips, your patients get transferred out then it's not the best ICU for CRNA.
In addition to high acuity, you want to look for units that will give you the opportunity for leadership or committee experience.
I hope this helps-- thanks for tuning in. Cheers to your future!

Thank you for the information! I just graduated and landed my job at Cardiac ICU! Do you think CICU will still be a good experience or in crna application compared to working at CVICU? should I gain my experience at least a year at CICU and transfer to MICU or CVICU to be a competitive applicant? in the CICU unit that I will work for they mostly handle PA cath, impella, CRRT, but they told me they rarely get chest tubes or ECMO patients

      Congratulations!! That's an exciting accomplishment!!
As far as ICU goes-- the type of ICU is less important than the acuity (provided it's a type of ICU your desired program accepts ie some don't accept NICU)... If you're not regularly seeing ventilators, vasoactive drips, your patients get transferred out then it's not the best ICU for CRNA.
In addition to high acuity, you want to look for units that will give you the opportunity for leadership or committee experience as that will also be important for your CRNA application :)
PS- We'd love to see you in the Academy when you're ready! We're currently celebrating an over 60% (!!) acceptance rate amongst students who use the Academy for the year+ leading up to their application; for perspective, the average national acceptance rate in only about 15% so it's worth considering! Hope this helps-- congratulations again! Cheering you on!

I definitely agree with what you said about why people think CVICU is the best ICU experience. ECMO and Balloon Pumps are typically seen there. However, working in Neuro ICU (which doubles as MICU overflow at my hospital), I've had countless of patients on pressors, sedation, and ventilators. Lots of CRRT and hemodynamically unstable patients are seen there. Recently just had a patient with right and left lung chest tubes. So, yes, I definitely believe that CVICU shouldn't be the only sought after ICU experience needed to get into CRNA school. And I'm saying this as a new grad nurse.
