you gotta double de-clutch these car
either the gearbox' synchros are worn out or it doesn't have synchros at all..
either way you gotta double de-clutch it or wait until the rpm's drop to the appropriate rpm before you shift gears to avoid grinding

How do you know what's appropriate rpm?
you just got to know... what rpm it is..
try shifting a 5 speed Manual car from 1st to 3rd to 5th
lets say it's a diesel that you rev up to 3500rpm before you shift
since the gear ratios are wide, you gotta wait until it drops to something like 1500 rpm before you shift
so that the engine and gearbox would have time to synchronize
it's like matching the rpm of the engine to the rpm of the gearbox
so you dont grind the gearbox by forcing it to synchronize
by the sound of the engine
He didn't know how to double clutch a non synchro gearbox

1937. Would it even have synchromesh? I really don't know. This was not a cheap car in its day, so maybe it did.

In the U.S., we call it "double clutching". Maybe this car is too old to have "synchromesh", so you need to take your time shifting into gear.
You should double-clutch these old cars. The reason why the gears are grinding when shifting was because you didn't double-clutch / sync the gears.

You have to "double clutch" or be patient and wait for the engine to come to the right RPM to shift. You would learn to drive and stop this car very quickly, or you would die. That's good motivation.Trust me, you would learn.
