- On this video I show in detail how i mix sand and cement render used for the 1st coat the first coat is the base coat the under coat of witch your top coat will be applied, I show the ratios and some tips as well as telling you all the ppi / safety gear that should be used , the 1st coat is usually called the scratch coat I would normally have it mixed 3 to 1 and my additives and texture will change depending on the job i will be undertaking , sand and cement rendering is not easy task but it all starts in the mix you get it right and everything else will be that little easier , the saying goes its all in the mix its 100% true , on the next videos I will be showing how to prep how to coat and scratch the walls and key them ready for the top coat , I will then show how to prep the 1st coat ready for the top coat of render , I will show me laying on the sand and cement top coat and then how i straighten it and rule it off ready to be finished I will also show a finishing video again were I float / rub the wall smooth and how i finish the cement render with a float then a sponge off......SUBSCRIBE PLEASE

Have started using lime since i changed sand supplier, i was using Kilsaran but im getting it from a private quarry and its much finer sand, not as good as kilsaran, but adding the lime has made it stickyer and more creamy, drys slightly quicker but it just means i get to float it sooner.
1 big shovel of lime per full mixer
Yea will make it fluffy stuff to mate we used to use a scoop per mix for dry dash but like you say it can dry fast at times cant hang about
Delighted to see you struggling to get the SBR lid off....this was me last week, I ended up having to take a set of water pump pliers to it! I thought it was just me getting old! lol.

I had this problem with my PVA can . . I couldn't find my pliers though . . So I boiled the kettle and poured the hot water around the cap . . The cap came off with ease just using fingers .
Good video Mac, was going to mention there's a difference between loading by shovel and by bucket...by bucket is far more accurate... "elasticity "was the word they used to use...ah you know all the tricks...once my mixer man got the gauge right on 3rd barrow, I asked how much water in that one he replied" none"....haha true !!!!!that was wet sand....

I think I need one of those mixers. It's hard to make the mortar or concrete for tilling by barrel and shovel . I know tilling in UK is different from Afghanistan. You guys don't need concrete for tilling, just glue and tile cutter. Good luck mac and God bless you
Here there is in old buildings what i call Belfast tiles , These tiles where applied using cement straight to the brick and we are talking between 100 to 200 years ago and i swear taking them of is almost impossible as the tiles is strong and the adhesive cement they used is even stronger again even hard to remove with a kango drill , If you could ever get a mixer like this buddy you should very handy , Thanks for watching mate :)
Mixing on a big board might be better than mixing in a barrel Asghar my friend. Around 4 foot x 4 foot is a good manageable size and you could screw a 3"x 2" frame around the edge to stop stuff running off the sides. In the UK you can buy rigid plastic mixing boards that are similar to what I've described, the only real difference being that the ready made ones are octagonal and are made of plastic which is easy to clean. (Do you have these in Afghanistan?) Hope that helps mate

It's all about sand mate , I use waddington fell sharp sand .dead easy to mix and rub up
For sure the right plastering sand /sharp sand and the job will go smother haha in more ways than one ;)
In Australia our plastering sand always needed lime added to sand/cement to make it workable and stop the water separating from mix-i guess our sand needed it in the day.

Does the same sand used to mix mortar work for the render? Basic building sand? Do i need to be specific about type of sand for render when ordering from supplier

@@macplastering yes it's just down to a bit of common knowledge and since have been working on building sites from the age of 16 and there was never a word of health and safety this health and safety that to keep people safe and well but I think they do go over the top a little bit on some things but hey what would we know we're only workers. Heading to Puerto Rico next week with the family and 3 other couples so just going to take the 3 weeks had a few things to do around my own house the wife been nagging all year painting outside and a few other things to tidy up you'll never get much chance to do anything in your own house lol a working holiday in Donegal sounds good it's the most beautiful county in Ireland hope you get a bit of good weather as it rains 51 weeks a year in Donegal lol....

what kind of wall is it brick or block ?

@@MrRumbing If it is old block it might need power washed and scrubbed clean 1st then possibly a scud coat, if new block might just need a splash of water and go straight on

So I have only ever worked over this stuff on a few jobs here we also call it soap block and it can be cut with a hand saw think were are talking the same blocks here , but yes its so light and here it gets used for inside walls as it is still strong but light weight so great for apartments and upper floors as it keeps weight down and keeps strength and sound fire proof ,,,, but yes 1st time I cam across it a long time ago we pved it the pva dried like way to quick so realised this stuff is hot meaning it dries fast and is thirsty , so we but pure pva on and wow still dried so then we floated it with render say 4 to 1 not easy not easy at all drying sliding just a pain , skimming wet wall get it on and get it trowelled fast this stuff will no hang around, so later on on another bigger job apartments here they are agin these wonderful blocks but a pain for us spreads, no one ever thinks of the poor plasterers LOL so this time we scud coated it like this video - th-cam.com/video/wTnwvSiMS_4/w-d-xo.html
The mix was something like 2 to 1 cement with water proffer and pva in it to help it stick give strength and hold back the suction / drying out of the next coat with it did but it still dries fast , If I was you I would scud one day scratch and bead next day and rub smooth / finish 3rd day a lot of work but it is what think would be best mate hope this is helpful buddy

I had to google SBR-never seen before-i see it is a polymer/adhesive type additive-i have used a chemical based one called Weldcrete many years ago on the new Parliament house job here in Canberra Australia in the 80's as PVA was banned as it did not meet the 200yr life span they they required on that job.Keep up the great informative vids and also love the un-boxing and testing videos
Oh yes i done a few videos now with SBR I seems a very good product for anything with doubt in the mind to me fro using it I have found it strengthens the mix makes it set harder but also faster not always a good thing if doing large walls , it also helps it bond to near anything , and best thing its a water proffer also Best of 3 worlds for me strength ,bond ,water resistance

Cheers mate I use the sbr for an extra little belt and brace it is a bonding agent and water proffer and makes the render a little stronger so it was just a little to help in all those areas but remember it also sets the cement of a little faster
Get a old dustbin lid and stick it on mixer when mixing and no more mix splashing everywhere, tell me this are you using sbr as a waterproofer, do you prime wall first with sbr before applying scratch coat also do you ever scud wall before scratch coat, have you done any rough casting uploads, sorry for all the questions but I am a bricklayer who gets asked to render and rough cast a lot of the time after building blockwork so I might as well give it a blast I have done bits of rendering but want to learn best possible mix, cheers buddy
Yes have lots of videos both dry dash and wetdash videos uploaded and did a huge livestream where me and other plasterers discusses loads of mixes , thing on dashing it is harder than it looks and all about prep work and mix :) ,I have both sbr and some water-proffer in I wet the wall sometimes scud them if it needs it but good clean block shouldn't need it tbh Have a job im going to do at my own place where i will show me scudding block just for the video and demo of it but it wont need it tbh a good power wash would be perfect witch will also do :) If you want I can have a look for them videos but should be easy to find on channel search bar just type in some key words your after and they should appear afer all over 300 videos lol but if you cant find let me know mate

HOW do u keep the work area so clean. When i use my mixer it gets everywhere. I need tarpaulin, sheeys, wood, anything i can use to keep cement off the floor.
I would normally cover the whole floor with plastic but on this one the flags where to be lifted so wasn't a must , after every mix it was poured into a whee barrow or tub and if anything spilled just cleaned it straight away and cleaned u with hose after the day was over :) Thanks for the comment buddy

Hi Richard mate Thanks for the support, Vest to read the sbr you got see what it recommends I have for some older jobs put a good healthy amount in and let me tell you that render will be there for a long time , bear in mind it makes render set faster a tighten faster during use also if using in top coat it can be harder to work with feels very sticky and can be hard to float up if this makes sense, have a good few videos on render and sbr up now mate might be of more help and we get new videos uploaded every Sunday but try y best to get more than 1 a week uploaded to help any body board and myself something to do :)

Oh yea...spoke to soon last wk...mixing drill stopped mid mix......bit repair was possible I brought it to the right man,he found lead wire failed inside handle supplying the trigger..
dod you get that mix finished or was it binned ?? or did you have to use a stick and plunger ?
@@macplastering haha great question Mac....the young guy at the time abandoned the large drum, bag of base coat powder and water ,, just left it for dumping, unreal mentality!!! Later I tackled with plunger but I was winded a few times before it was nice ..

@@macplastering yes mate getting on ok. Working with someone and he doesn't use straight edge n I said I makes life easier. But suppose he's stuck in his ways. He uses 4-1 on scratchcoat, also 4-1 on on second coat. Is that ok? Doesn't use sbr just rendamix too. 🤷.

Nice video, in wet dash render there seems to be a bit of controversy over the scratch coat mix. Some say no waterproofer, just plasticiser in the scratch and no waterproofer in top coat, as if you apply waterproofer in the scratch overtime the top coat will boss. What’s you thinking, experience of this?
Never had any issues with my mix mate I just always stick to what as worked for me

There's actually a colour additive you can use. It's in powder form and comes in various colours. I can't remember what it's called but it comes in tins and you'll have to experiment with how much to use. Travis Perkins stock it mate. Hope that helps
Like my good mate Craig says there is additives for sure dyes you can add to the mix , there is also coloured renders like webber and k rend , so much choice its unreal and there is another way witch in the future I will show you all on video as it will e much easier and also every one will get to know what I know :)

Hiya Mac mate... I've been told by a couple of my builder mates that a shovel of lime mortar does wonders for the mix ie workability and extended drying time with less cracking... I've never done that. What's your opinion mate? I'd be interested to know 'cos you're a real pro!
You only want lime in the top coat and never put more lime then cement in the lime helps by allowing it to move slightly and makes it nice to work with

Joe Stewart in my opinion is 100% And rember lime will burn you 10 times more than cement , i find lie good if dashing can make a nice fluffy mix but never to much mabe just a scoop or 2 or in a big mixer a shovel or 2 :)

None here that i know off you can buy premixed sand and cement and tell them its for 1st coat outside here they are called rtu meaning ready to use
If i sbr wall first could i get away with just doing one coat as the copings will only allow thin coats

I'm a DIY-er doing some sand and cement render at home internally. I'm struggling to calculate how much sand and cement to mix for a given square metre. Is there an easy way to estimate quantities?
Also, I bought Sikabond SBR+ and I can't interpret the dosage instructions on the bottle; I can't work out how much I should be putting in. And should this go in both the scratch and top coat? I watered it down and painted it on the brickwork first.
I also have a plasticiser that I have been putting a tiny splash in each time. Is it okay to use that in combination with the SBR+?

So When i use sbr I always paint it on neat / pure and will coat over it while wet or tacky before it dries, when i add some to a mix I only ever add a drop full I believe there is loads off videos on my mixes on channel if you fancy a look....
There is for sure a way to calculate meter per weight of sand and cement im not sure on the mathematical formula but no doubt it would need the area and the depth added in then the ratio of mix and would give you what's needed to achieve this, thing is I have been doing it that long just go by eye and of course ever wall and backgrounds are different, will need different mixes and or more coats to get straight ect A good way to simplify how much you need is make one mix see how far that gets you then just multiply that and you will know how many mixes you shall need and how much materials hope this is helpful my friend

Is it okay to put a dash of Sikabond SBR+ in a top coat? I've seen some fellas say "never put waterproofer in top coat" but I don't know why.
I bought a scarifier that has flat teeth and I'm finding it isn't sharp and strong enough to scratch the surface a lot of the time. Did I buy the wrong thing? Are those style scratchers for a different type of plastering maybe?
@deaosatori216 your gear is setting to muchnor on to thin if u wet wall down and add a little more on the scratcher should work 100%. I put water proffer in my top coat but really would use sbr can make it harder to finish
is that SBR like rapid hardner for scratch coat.
there is rapid hardener that is clear , I use sbr as it has more benefits such as water proof , strength and a bonding agent
Will putting to much cement and plasticiser make it impossible to float ????

@@EIREESPANA Yes to much cement will make it almost like clay and can make it crack loads we small cracks everywhere, also if you do 2 coats we where always told and taught the top coat needs to be weaker that the 1st

@@macplastering i guess Bagging is aussie thing and USA thing its bacily the application of a mixture that smooths an external or internal brick wall, without concealing the irregularity and texture of the bricks. im doing research for when i do my own home

To the edge of coping I’m afraid it hasn’t got a duct under

@@joevanisalcedo most things i would do to make it go off faster would be frost proffer it makes it go off quicker sbr seems to also but can be a little harder to finish there is another product called so something like foundu makes it go of in 10mins for heavy spots

Why do you only put a cap full of sbr in mate?? The tub suggests you should be putting pretty much the whole tub in per 25kg of cement.
If I was you do a test area before butting so much in but sticking to instruction is always good , but if it fails will they take the blame ?
I find to much sbr makes the gear hard to work with and set faster , On this wall I just wanted a taste too help bond and water proof some as you can see I also add water proffer , also cement it self is good and stopping water , You might like the 5l sbr to 1 bag good to work with everyone is diffrent

it should work ok mate for inside but might not be as good for outside as no waterproofer wont be as good , mortar mix makes it more fluid / easier to work with , the sbr is to help it bond , gain strength , also its water proof , ps you will find you'll use more water with out mortar mix and it might crack a little more also , hope this helps
@@macplastering must put it in my second coat then.it looks good without it but it was a bit harder to work with told the boy mixin it to put it in not said he forgot. And its outside hope it holds

what does a capful of sbr do
Sometimes a little dose a lot mate but the sbr will act as a bonding agent a strengthener a water proffer and it also makes the render set faster witch is also good as the weather at the time was not great :)

Wonder could you help,
I've followed your videos and tride to replicate, but the mix just doesn't seem the same.. as yours, the mix seems NOT sticky and dead...no muddy like yours.
Think it might be the sand, it kilsaran plastering sand, sbr and plastizer used cement used waterproofer used, clean water and mixed with mixer... scratch cost doesn't seem to want to lay down and very hard to trowel on light or heavy without falling back...
I had to put a thick cost on just to get it on the wall but then it's falling away and when I lightly scratch it defentley falls away ...wall is new solids dampened down with water.... not to damp or dry,, even the mixer seem very clean after the mix not sticky..
Going to try different plastering sand but if you can think of anything I'm doing wrong or causing this could you let me know... cheers mark
Dose sound like sand as you can see this very mix I have done is then scratched on and similar mix for the top coat on these videos , try a small mix with a little more mortar mix to see if it helps it flow , it almost sounds like sand is to fine as for when it is falling of fine sand tends to want to stick to itself and not the wall like building sand ,plastering sand is gritty but not to gritty , these grits give great strength and grip

It's actually seem very gritty
I mixed a bit of mortar sand into the mix on the next day just to see did that help
And it did a bit ...easier to work with...it was just a small test area I did and I pulled it back off the next Day...
