My dad had a job after retiring form the Navy is a chief engineer on one of companies' cruise ships in this video. He went on one trip and quit due to safety concerns. The guy has been to war multiple times...

My wife’s family loves cruise ships. I hate them. My idea of a vacation is getting out and doing something, windsurfing, scuba, jeeping, surfing, mainly away from crowds and not having to me nice and talk to people.

My grandma went on Princess's one. She had a good time just before retirement with her friends on the cruise. I asked her if she would go on it again, she said sure.

My wife and I went on a cruise for our honeymoon and when we arrive back in port, there were dozens of emergency vehicles. It turned out that several crew members died while trying to perform some maintenance on the sewage treatment system. Like the first team was overcome with fumes or something and more people tried to rush in to rescue them but ended up falling victim to it as well. It sucks that they died because some safety feature failed.

I was on the Carnival Glory before this crash. The Captain of the boat was amazing. On the "Behind the Scenes" tour while on the bridge he starts going on about how cruise ships are essentially 12+ floor sailboats with shitty steel sails that don't move and the "stupid engineers" need to put pools (moving water) on the top levels to keep people happy. One of his officers quickly walked over and distracted him but our tour group loved it. He came back to us and then went on to complain about pilot boats, "I have been coming into these harbors for 20 years now but some shithead on a tugboat knows better than the guy driving the hotel boat?". 100% he'd call that a new Carnival Glory Hole if the same dude was around at this time. Also the other boat needed a pilot.
I always felt like a cruise ship voyage was a nightmare waiting to happen. I wouldn't go on one even if they paid me. It's like staying at a trashy hotel you can't leave.
3 days sleeping in a closet or if not getting fleeced at the bar/shopping etc.

@@jonathanfairchild Unless it is legal in whatever country's flag the ship sails under. There is no separate law for international waters, every plane or cruise ship operates under the laws of the country whose flag they sail under.
I work in a cruise ship and all i can say is YES.

I've always tried to get to know the workers and respect them ( even bought a Christmas gift for our room worker)
These people make your vacation perfect and most treat them like garbage.
If we ever get back to normal im going on a cruise again, and will deffinetly plan on showing more love for them
@@jerrydunham2042 thanks for adding context. That is sad but I still don't understand why or how they're treated poorly. Are they indentured or paid poorly like the overseas migrant workers in the middle east? By all accounts from what I've read they are paid substantially more then the wages local to their country where it's a coveted job.

All I know is these hard working people do there very best to make it a great vacation and guests ( mainly American and Canadian from what I see) make a scene fit for murder over not having a towel shaped like a puppy on there bed.
What I wish ships would do, is allow the workers to talk with us more.
Mainy workers from around the world on these ships and we could learn so much by sharing there culture with us.
People need to learn to treat everyone the way they want to be treated

Went on a cruise once and that was the last one for me.
1. Casino way too easy to access
2. Don't look at beautiful pictures of your destinations, that is not were the boat is going.
3. Full of people not interested to live a real experience abroad.
4. Full of hidden charges on your final bill. Becomes way more expensive than initially thought.
5. Polluting like crazy.. and I care about sea life!

@ most money from tourism go back to the tourist industry which isnt always a bad thing but u wont see growth just from tourism.
I am sure thats what they taught you in school, however living here in the carribean i can see first hand how tourism creates growth. half the people i know work in tourism and it has allowed them to have great lives, the tax dollars collected pay for major projects and create a better life.
please dont ever implement what you learned in school until you live it.

well I've been on a cruiseship and let me tell you, it really depends on the ship you're on, because our ship had very good sanitation and everyone had to be very clean with clean hands and such. There were no breakouts and everyone was healthy. It's really an amazing experience... probably the best experience for a holiday so far... too bad it's very expensive
I used to work in summers Alaska and this stuff happens ALL THE TIME. Cruise ships hitting each other, cruise ships hitting smaller boats, cruise ships taking out docks, fuel spills, sewage spills, guest fights, norovirus outbreaks, ship crew going AWOL because they can't take it anymore. It's a ridiculous industry.
Carnival apparently has a few openings on their cruise ship Glory. Stern accommodations are now half off.

They must have gotten an amusement designer from Action Park. That, or someone ignored the part of the operation manual where the engineers point out in no uncertain terms what conditions are necessary for safely operating the slide.

I don’t know, some of the best trips I’ve done have been on cruise ships. Although most of them have been on smaller ships, where the main point are the locations, not the ship itself. It’s like hotel where everytime you wake up, you are in a new place. And the excursions at locations are usually awesome.
Yeah nothing like rushing around half a day at the port of call just to be packaged back into a tin can of geriatrics in the evening!
This industry needs to collapse already.
This industry needs to expand, and get away from trying to be floating fucking party zones. It uses less fuel and is cheaper to transport things by sea, whether cargo or people.

For the people who don't know it: the ships are *not* floating hotels.
They are much more floating malls with a chain of hotels and a hospital attached, made profitable
1) by a crew that works for approx 2$-5$/hour, on avg 350h a month, this amounts on average for 80% of the crew members
2a) by using the cheapest unrefined junk of heavy oil found as a fuel - many many times more dangerous and pollutant than the lowest quality diesel
2b) bare in mind that fxcking heavy oil fuel isn't used primarily in a procees of moving forward, but it serves as an environment friendly power plant for a small town of 5 - 8.000 people who need electricity & air-conditioning working 24/7 in order well not to die
3) by not giving much fxck on either employee rights or paying taxes and why should they if we have a legal thing called tax havens
4) by goverments heavily subsidizing building new (mega)ships in order to save jobs in docks
As much as possible of resources aboard is recycled indeed, but let's give it a short thought on how much oil, cleaning chemicals and waste water has to be released. Somewhere.

Yea, I know you're not an ex crew member, because you'd know exactly where they dump waste chemicals. It's not exactly like ports have nowhere to throw any excess oil or waste out, in fact, most ports not only encourage it, but urge them to do it. Why do you think cruise ships make port so often? What, to visit the city? Fuck no, people go on cruises for the cruise, not the cities. The cities are literally stops for the cruise ship. Actually, good question, if you were a crew member, what's the majority ethnicity of all crew members? Without googling it. Tell me.

KrazyKiwi, wouldn’t that depend on the cruise line? Working one cruise line wouldn’t give someone instant knowledge of the racial demographics of the entire industry.
They also sail under the flags of tiny island countries to avoid paying taxes and then demand bailouts from countries whose treasuries they don’t pay into.
I live on the coast of southern California. Cruise ships frequently pass by, just 5 miles offshore. I can always tell when those lanes are busy, by the kind of trash I find on the beach at low tide. Plastic forks, plastic cups, deflated balloons, flowers from table arrangements, fruit rinds (mostly watermelon and orange), styrofoam containers, golf balls, articles of clothing (mainly ball caps and single flip flops), empty sunscreen or tanning lotion tubes, disposable lighters, cheap sunglasses, and plastic flower leis, mostly.

I'll never understand why cruise ships don't nail down their furniture
right? in the (us) navy, they beat that into us. always have everything secured. even at training commands they joke about it. "stow your books for sea. you never know when the building will take a roll."
This one time, when I was on an aircraft carrier, we were steaming toward Thailand, and I'm in the office at 11pm local time preparing some paperwork so they don't bug me about not knowing how to fill it out while I'm out in town. Suddenly, we're in a high speed turn (which is what you see in those videos when we look like we're trying to tokyo drift with a giant ship) because we were about to collide with a fishing vessel that had its lights turned off (we managed to avoid them). the only things that moved in the office were the chairs. all of our computers, desks, filing cabinets, etc. were fastened to the deck/desks, and all our manuals were in lockers.
Because knowing how the sea and sailing works does not appear to be a prerequisite to running a cruise line. If the people in charge could convince people to pay money to be placed inside a giant compactor and then squeezed until more money comes out, they'd do it. They basically already have.
do you want to really know? because they would get about 500 complaints from every single passenger about not being able to adjust their chairs, or move their table closer to their friends, or other entitled ass shit

Was on a Carnival cruise, and in Grand Turk for the day. We left 36 people at the pier for being over an hour late. They had to find their own way home from there, with whatever the cabin stewards could find of their things delivered to the dock security. It was HILARIOUS watching them run down the dock to try and catch a leaving boat, and starting the chant of ‘RUN FORREST RUN’. It went on for nearly 20 minutes because the captain was being awesome and holding us there just beyond the dock.

It's not the worst way to travel, but most problems you face on a cruise ship you'll face going on a group tour on land as well. Really if you don't mind doing your own research it's better to just grab some family and friends and do it yourselves instead of relying on others
No are you mad. Cruising is awesome. Bets holiday I’ve ever been on. Theirs so much to do. You get to travel around and do so much. Crusing brings in billions of dollars to tourists economy’s around the world.

I mean I did the same when we got caught in a storm in the North Sea, its great because most passengers get stuck in their cabins sick so you get the place to yourself
i'm sure it started out alright and people were looking at the awesome view, and then the seas got a lot rougher and stuff started flying. also, it's kind of weird how small ships and RVs are required to have everything bolted down, but cruise ships manage to avoid that. you buy a sailboat, the furniture is either benches built into the walls, or swivel chairs bolted down to the boards. cabinets are magnetic and lock or latch in place.
I’d rather be there looking out forward at the sea than sitting on my shitty bunk in my windowless cabin 🤷♀️
To that would be probably be the most exciting part of the cruise!

@Mitchell Hart I ate seafood soup in a Thailand Restaurant and 1h later i permanently threw up. When i was empty i drank some coke and vomit that as well. Weird feeling when you have no acid left and throw up something sweet.
Took some pills with a drop of water,, i counted them on the street 3 mins later.
It was so weakening and painful to have this feeling for 3h and cramp your stomach even if nothings left to vomit.
I landed in the hospital with 3 doctors and denied any food.
Even after i got out and flew to singapore i didnt eat for 5 days
Favourite bit: 2.23 when the captain "sinks the slipper" to the poor bastard on the floor.
Remembering my cruise days all this moments I got in my experience some funny, some crazy but truly enjoyable

Yeah Ive worked on ships since 2006 and dont know what everyones comments came from. It only goes to show you how easily influenced people can be on TH-cam by watching highly edited and highly selected clips.

In Australia, living in an aged care facility is so stupidly expensive that many old folks choose to live out their final days on a comparatively cheap cruise ship instead.

Carnival is literally the worst cruise company on earth.
Its also one of the biggest, and has many many daughter companies. You basically sail carnival, royal or not at all.

Every time I hear about the horrors of cruise ships, I feel blessed to suffer from motion sickness that keeps me firmly on dry land.
I have been on cruise ships three times and nothing like that happened. Dont choose some cheap party cruise ship. I love going on a cruise. Its so great.

If theres 3000 people on a ship all on the same vessel walking around everywhere, think about how much pollution each person would separately create if they were all spread out on land. 3000 people. Maybe 2700 of them are all of driving age. Maybe 2000 of them actively drive everywhere.
Most of them are somewhat wealthy so money isnt stopping them from driving and consuming alot of packaged things. Food on ship comes in bulk packages and and is all incinerated and waste is all filtered into grey water before being released extremely far from shore as per regulations.
If you actually break it down, cruise ships, for the amount of people they serve and the experience it creates, prevents people from doing their regular damage to the environment for the few days or weeks they are on board, giving them a life changing experience very close to nature, only causing them to come off the ship appreciating it more.
