Was lucky enough to get this on one of my Stretch and Bobbito KCR 89.9 tapes back in the day. Must have pressed rewind at the end of this song at least 50 times. The mighty Mos at his finest.
I remember buying this, among most underground hip hop between 97-2002, at first release. I can still remember peeling the cellophane off and the smell inside the sleeve. It got so much play it crackled like mad. I now have virtually none of my old vinyl :(
i remember hearing this for the first time on Stretch & Bob, recorded it on a 90 minute cassette flexing the next day at school. salute Yasiin/Mos and J. Period for this classic.
Mos Def makes me wish I was born & raised in Brooklyn............this man is pure genius!! I met him and he is mad cool. I always catch mad wreck to this song (that's dancing my a** off to the hip hop impaired).
This was the Jam back in the 6th grade!!! I remember hearing this song when my bro bought the single which also contained "If you can Huh you can hear". Just remember that was one of his first records that he bought when first started to mess with Turntables. Ah those were the days...
omg!i havent heard this sence it came out.and it just popped up in my head and i had to come here to you tube to see if anyone posted it.thank you so much for this one kid!
That bassline is slick as fukk!! Along with the Hannah-Barbara, reptilian sound effects in the back was straight killin 'em!! Lol Summer of '97 was phenomenal, man....
Same. CAU student living on Stokes Ave, a few blocks from the Cascade Kroger, Churches Chicken and the cheap Chinese food spots. Had my tape decks set for WRAS, WRFG and WCLK all day every day. 🖤✊🏽
@@77Creation wow, I stayed on Holderness ave, closer to Lucille ave. WRAS ha the hip hop on saturday with Iras, and sunday had the reggae. Never once ate at the chinese spot across from kroger looked suspect. The malcom x festival at the west end park was right down the street, and I usually ate Yasin's or Soul Vegeterial... LOL and got my books from the shrine. ofthe black madonna. west end aint the same, its gentrified now
When they first broke this track on college radio over here, I knew this was the future of Hip Hop, this was the next level shit that all the underground heads was starving for!
Baby it's in my chromosomes to ROCK/Microphones sets who wanna test the M-O/Best to leave that nigga alone/I make no bones or poems about droppin bars/I make the world full swing under the Mos Def YES/I ring the alarm like tennis sore/My style hella-raw, I keep it raw bone like Skeletor oooh the good old days
You can thank Shawn J. Period for this beat. One of the most under-appreciated producers in the world.
Yes indeed
Genius production!
Very very true
Agrred 🇬🇧
Only a true lyrical genius could rap on a snare for a minute and still keep you hooked.
I don't get why he doesn't make "the lists" if you know what I mean. He's one of the best to get in front of a mic, no doubt about it.
Rawkus era shit was the bomb
hell yeah... they never put out an alum/single I didnt like... RIP Rawkus
Im rappin' Rawkus will reborn
This has to be one of the most underrated productions by one of the most underrated producers in the GAME!!!! Respect Shawn J!!! Bow down!

mos def is on of the 3 only artists that i actually buy the actual cd for
by far my favorite Mos Def spit...and yes Shawn J. Period shines
its our job as future parents to show our future children what REAL music is.
Life isn't just about material and drugs.
This ain't nothing to do with real or fake
Great as an old hiphopjunkie to discover when one of your kids sends you a link of something like Jinxtro - Nahncenz.
All is not lost 😁
@@korruptnovellst4751 most definitely :)
Illest Mos Def track of all time!!!
Mos Def is easily a top 5 MC of all time.
Facts
I remember buying this, among most underground hip hop between 97-2002, at first release. I can still remember peeling the cellophane off and the smell inside the sleeve. It got so much play it crackled like mad. I now have virtually none of my old vinyl :(
Brother! what a cool glimpse of the past
That 5 year period was the 2nd and final Golden Era. 🖤
This is better than anything in mainstream now
Most definitely!
Its all mathematics here :)
Still true in 2021
Fax wtf is the crap being played today. Only few is decent in my opinion.
Anyone in 2018 wishing hip hop had evolved into sumpin like this? Mos definitely , this is hip hop to me!
This brother is untouchable. Mad skills & rather unique 👊👌🔪
Mos Def forever. Just a real guy who happens to be insanely talented.
You had to be there to know how much of a classic this is!
Still listening 2021. The epitome of real hip hop.
SOOOOOO DOPE!
Takes me back to like '96-'97
i remember hearing this for the first time on Stretch & Bob, recorded it on a 90 minute cassette flexing the next day at school. salute Yasiin/Mos and J. Period for this classic.
Still getting goosebumps in 2019
Right here with ya!!!
almost 2025 fellas
Goodness gracious!!! Most Def Is killing it on this joint.
This is keeping me on point in 2020 even on that Quarantine vibe
Mos Def makes me wish I was born & raised in Brooklyn............this man is pure genius!! I met him and he is mad cool. I always catch mad wreck to this song (that's dancing my a** off to the hip hop impaired).
I love the fact that Mos Def was able to get into movies and still come back to the game swingin' n' hittin'. Take notes from this fella, Ice Cube.
Its because Mos Def never pretended to be anything other than himself, except for when acting. Ice Cube had a phoney persona to maintain.
My prized vinyl back in the day. Along with the instrumental versions on the other side, damn that was good stuff.
This was the Jam back in the 6th grade!!! I remember hearing this song when my bro bought the single which also contained "If you can Huh you can hear". Just remember that was one of his first records that he bought when first started to mess with Turntables. Ah those were the days...
This track is on the first soundbombing LP It came out back in '97. & it got some other bangers on there too!
This is so fantastic man, I never get sick of it
one of the best song produced by Shawn J Period
This track is a lesson in Hip-hop Greatness! Someone please inform the future! Thank you.

LOVE HIS JAZZY BEATS HE USE THIS IS OFF THE HOOK
It's amazing that this is his first single.
Didn't know that! Any tracks could've been picked. I can see why this was picked though.
I remember hearing Mos Def rhyme the alphabet, I just sat there in silence as a sign of respect
Damn, takes me back to Summer, 97!
I almost got tired of hearing it after being played so much on the local hip hop radio shows.
1:36 lol wether u speak Japanese or goonie goo goo, nice one mos, insert a Eddie Murphy joke in there. Still best hip hop artist ever
His flow and rhyme scheme sounded very Q Tip influenced
He considers Q-Tip one of his style fathers, and he's also considered a Native Tongue family member.
*Nasal flow.
That was my main issue with him at the time. He sounded too much like Tip at the time.
Good choice most of what I have done in music is Q Tip Influenced
Yasiin bay or Mos Def... pure lyrical genius!
forgotten gem this one. Love like thisssss!
Legendary from the first time hearing it on the Beat Junkies mix tape from the 90’s...good ol days
Probably one the best debut album ever
This and "Next Universe" and "If You Can Huh! You Can Hear" and most Mos Def songs are amazing
I believe the beginning of this was a freestyle.. Genius!

This backing is dope.

Mos Def.... he certainly is.
shame mos def's heart wasn't really in rapping, he really is an unfulfilled genius
I thought hip hop was gonna be like this forever damn where did we fail
"Raise your hands in the air; everybody get with it. The Universal Magnetic B-Boy..."
This and MF Doom - Accordion get looped infinitely sometimes.
Every time I hear those bird samples in the background I find myself looking out the window, ha ha. Dope track, anyway.
Listened to this one back then until the vinyl wore down the vinyl.
these are true rhymes
I heard this track on Stretch and Bobbito on WKCR.
