    I can understand your negatives. My family hasn't treated this as a campaign and only play with everything unlocked and that for us completely took out those problems. I'd strongly recommend anyone who is interested in this game to unlock everything and then see if you want to treat it as a one off game. It is an older game for sure and most of its staying power is the IP!
    NJ on the review!!!! Keep 'em coming!

      @@SirJamezTown in my opinion it gets better with the two extrnsions. More versatile. More replayable.

    I agree with the point that deckbuilders often just copy paste what came before, and rarely do anything different. One that really jumps out at me for avoiding these tropes is Dale of Merchants. Your deck rarely gets bigger than 20~ cards because you'll so often be burning the cards for their secondary effect, which removes them from the deck. The other thing is you don't arbitrarily discard any unused cards at turn's end, and you keep anything new you purchased, rather than wait for it to cycle round via the discard pile. The game is great out of the box but there are stand-alone expansions to increase the variety and replayability. It ends up playing like more of a race than typical comparing victory points. A nice universal theme as well, suitable for your daughter. Highly highly recommended if you've not yet played it and are tired of the usual clichéd deck builders.

    Nearly 3 minutes in and I already have to pause the video because I'm laughing too much. I got the inside joke, which is even funnier because you figured people might miss you are ginger, and 'you don't have to do that because you already did it' really got me. xD

    The good part is that with each Box more is added so that your not overwhelmed with stuff. Helps a lot with new Players. Also its never the same game. You have to adapt your strategy for each game because of the random market.

    • @BoardGameBollocks
      @BoardGameBollocks  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Most of the cards do roughly the same thing so there’s not much strategy to adjust.

    • @martinfunk4855
      @martinfunk4855 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      There are enough cards that are better with one or another char. Also if you play for example as ron and dont get allies you have to adapt. Neville has also to adapt if there ar no heal cards.. so i would say a little bit of strategy and flexibility is needed to succeed. At least when you play with addons.

    • @BoardGameBollocks
      @BoardGameBollocks  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @martinfunk4855 addons? If Ron doesn’t get allies then you’re screwed pretty much as you’re relying on another random draw..the strategy is so weak in this game that it largely doesn’t really matter what you draw.

    • @martinfunk4855
      @martinfunk4855 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@BoardGameBollocks addons are charms and potions, and the Monsterbox of Monsters. They introduce influence as cost do defeat enemies. And Monsters, that are not villians... and also Ginny weasly and Luna Lovegood.

      I had one time played as neville. But not the healing Type. I played draw+Discard. It was not very powerfull, but i could almost each turn play my whole deck and with this generate influence and buy the expensive stuff i need.

    I played this with my daughter many times, because she´s a huge fan of Mr. Potter. The game isn´t the best coop, nore deckbuilder, but has enough meat on the bone to enjoy. Especially games 6 and 7 are really challenging. Perfect game to play with kids.

  • @clarkewithe
    @clarkewithe 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    I think the rules even say “skip to game 4 if you know how deckbuilders work” but three games of boring introduction for a pretty simple game is too many, especially when there’s only a total of 7 levels

    I really appreciate Board Game Bollocks assessments of game - and one this one I disagree.
    As a Board Game Evangelist I endeavour to promote family gaming/spread the joy.
    I have recently exposed a complete bunch of newbies to board games though this game.
    They are 13, 12, 10 yrs old and are captivated.
    First 4 levels brought them into mechanics of something they had never seen before/ now they are loving it and the gaming experience.
    Introduced them to Flamme Rouge and was a hit.
    Flash Point Fire Rescue - love it.
    These are games that bring people into the hobby.

    @EmilioRodo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    We got it, because my wife is a big HP fan, so she wanted to play it. We got through the base game and the first expansion, gave up halfway through the second one. I personally found it a bit of a slog. Especially frustrating were the final villain who *spoiler* had a particular condition that we had to fulfill before we could deal any damage to him. On the other hand, our decks had enough healing so that we could easily repair any damage he could deal to us. Cue to 30 mins cycling through oir decks, hoping the cards would align so tgat we could fulfill the stupid condition and move the game forward.

    dang glad I didn't pick this up, sounds disappointing. Seems like a ton of potential wasted. I know its cheaper, but it never ceases to amaze me why publishers do this photo screen grab shit. They literally could add an illustrative filter over the stills and it would look 10x better. Games are instantly on the backfoot for this from a review perspective, and if they succeed, it is in spite of the "art" not because of it. I gave the last kingdom a chance because of your review, and I think its a great fucking game (albeit a bit too long), and it would have got so much more attention with some real art. Some publishers are silly

    I have this vision, which I cannot shake, of you playing Harry Potter rather than Daniel Radcliffe. I would imagine there would be more head butting and swearing and slightly less magic. Fortunately I have avoided all the films since I have a not imaginary girlfriend and am an educated man. One cannot easily save those damned to play Quidditch but one can surely condemn them. With best wishes and jolly broomsticks. I am not overly acquainted with the narrative so I hope you will excuse any lapses in terminology.
