The hidden meaning of the tapestry sown across his chest: the breastplate of righteousness. As he has become unrighteous, he has lost his chest piece but still must fight under the cross.
When i heard about the censoring i understood why the Lucifer fight is very distracting since old Lucifer decided to leave his underwear at home like he was taking advice from beowulf
Well nudity isn't sexual in and of itself, so the "distracting" bit says a lot more about the observer and their own insecurities. But on the other hand, Oh! what a hog
Dude, I just found your channel and have been watching your videos. I watch a lot of retrospective/review content and I have to say that this is an incredible review of the game. You go above and beyond to analyze it alongside the source material, especially so in this case considering that it isn't just a movie or popular novel that can be easily skimmed through while also paying respect all along the way without being preachy or one-sided. Really fantastic video.
I'd love a remaster as well, but I think you're underestimating how much EA would want to bury this game. Certain elements of the Circle of Violence and who's damned to suffer there would pretty much gaurentee EA tries to memoryhole like this game never happened.
@@relaxmawx1107 Violence is the ring where they explicitly say “you go to hell for being gay because it is a sin against nature” It was faithful to the original poem but there’s 0 way they’d even touch that again with a 20 foot pole
@@vnom84 I mean they wouldn't even need to go that far. You wouldn't even need to get to the first circle before they run into the concept that babies have souls which makes it clear that killing babies, aka abortion, is evil and a sin. Then there's the first circle, lust, which is taboo to criticize in any way these days. That's the new world religion, and criticizing and standing against it will get you canceled.
@@NovusIgnis While abortion during Alighieri’s time was disliked, infant deaths were too common back then for anyone to care too much. It wasn’t a hot-button issue until the GOP turned it into a political issue in modern times. The reason babies are in Hell in the game is because in Alighieri’s time, _unbaptized_ babies were considered damned. I honestly don’t think that there needs to be any “cancellation”, though. Just put a disclaimer at the start of the game that says the studio doesn’t share the original poem’s views, and it’s all good. Heck, I’m pretty sure the original game already had one of those.
@@Fluttersniper Like I said, it isn't that the game itself deliberately targets abortion, it's the fact that it declares babies, and potentially the unborn, to have souls, which places them on the same level as "humans" and this is something that the left can't tolerate. They need them to be stripped of their humanity, to make it easier to convince people to murder their children. And I think you missed the point of cancel culture. They can't even tolerate the creation of something that doesn't align itself 100% politically with them. They refuse to give a platform to contrary ideologies, even as a method to explore stories that may be compelling but that they don't agree with. That's why they feel the need to corrupt and distort anything that's conservative or Christian or capitalist or whatever other ideology they hate.
Don't worry, it's not a big deal; also in real life Beatrice was not Dante's wife, he loved her but that love was unrequited. Again, not a big deal, this is a video on the game, not a documentary of the book and such@@evprince

I wouldn’t expect a modern remake, a hack and slash with fixed camera and linear story pathway is very out of date. But it’s still a great game with replay value.
@@ripdeyu I would be very but pleasantly surprised if EA put in the effort to remake Dante’s inferno like modern GOW. But then it’s arguably not a “remake” but a full remaster.
@@Sirfortune881 I don’t know man the first game can be finished in a couple of hours. IMO they’d have to add a lot more pathways and content to extend the play time. I wouldn’t want to pay 90 bucks for a remaster that’s just a reskin of the old game when other publishers add a lot more to remasters and you known EA gonna charge us a lot for anything they do.
Devil May Cry 5 was a hit and it definitely showed the philosophy of if it ain't broken don't fix it in terms of hack and slash gameplay. A remake of this game with a free camera would be so damn good.
Given what happened to God of War (let's not pretend that Kratos' revival after the finale of 3 was anything more than Santa Monica wanting to make a Norse mythology game, but being too chicken to make a new IP... grumble grumble franchise necromancy grumble...), it became more Divine Comedy than the DI game. GoW4 was slower. Longer. Contemplative. A visual spectacle. Character focused, with redemption as a prominent theme. Had less and worse combat. Lots of talking. And towing around some near-helpless doofus, or as Kratos put it... BOY. Ironic, given how often "GoW Clone" is used to insult Dante's Inferno. Perhaps doubly ironic, given the sophomoric "immaturity" of the original God of War trilogy and its sub-entries actually _was_ true to the spirit of the Greek myths, if not always the letter, whereas Dante's Inferno was more true to the letter of the poem (to the point of often literally quoting it) than the spirit. The Greek Gods may have been primordial sociopaths and sex-pests deserving of everything they got while all the mortals suffer regardless of the manager, whereas the whole point of the Bible is that _we're_ the sociopaths for whom _God_ took a walloping so that we could bypass the consequences of our sins and become something better. If one of these two series deserved to turn down the edge and become more navel gazing, God of War was absolutely the wrong choice. Now they _both_ defy the spirit of their original cultures, being time capsules for ideas of their modern developers more than any preservation of the old.
This game DESPERATELY and I mean DESPERATELY needs a remake. This game was soooo freaking underrated. This game at the time had the best depiction of Hell that I had ever seen. I believe it still holds up to this day. It was a beautiful nightmare and I loved the story. I would love to see a remake along with adding the cut content that didn't make it into the game. Flush out the storyline a bit more and they can have my money.
4:05 Berserk mentioned 🐺 The environmental and conceptual design of this game is what I remember and appreciate the most. Not many games with unique memorable aesthetics like this. Only other game coming to mind is Alice: Madness Returns. I mean it’s the only game I’ve ever played where I can say I was attacked by dead babies and vaginas. Such an underrated game that deserved a sequel especially how they left it open like that.
Incredible analysis and explanation of the subject matter. Dante's Inferno is a fond gem from an era when EA would take risks with games like this, Dead Space and American McGee's Alice. It's great to see such an effort put into chronicling it and was a truly fun video to watch. Subbed.
One of my favorites. Just an FYI, I have a Series X and you are still able to buy it through Microsoft's store. I'm halfway through it again after over a decade.
Wish I had the physical copy for this game in my PS3, I bought mine already Microsoft banned and ps3 games in my country are HIGH price. Hell I found Nier for 400 bucks and demon souls for 999,99
I don't suppose you'd have an interest in examining Sam Fisher in the original Splinter Cell trilogy? Even though it's not explicitly Christian, I think the way Micheal Ironside influenced the character into more than just a cold hearted killer, particularly in Chaos Theory, points towards a particular interpretation of the "Just War"
@@evprince That's great, it's a really interesting franchise because of how Micheal Ironside pushed the character to be more than just the typical growling amoral killer.
Excellent Video Evan. I feel like too many people overlooked this game when it first came out. As Cheese-y and overtop as it might be, the story is really excellent (though I guess the game designers can't take all the credit there), the visuals and art direction are stunning, and it seems to be paired with some pretty competent hack and slash gameplay. Thanks for another top tier review!
Btw, when dantes father throws that cross and it keeps bouncing off you, if you upgraded your Unholy to Level 3 you can use an ability that allows you to deflect it back at him and have it keep bouncing off of him. The boss was honestly cheese after that, besides falling in the gold when the arena gets smaller
Good vid ma brother. I was invested from start to end. I personally played the game in my Series S because xbox and their retrocompatability and I really enjoyed it and give it a solid 8/10. I do hope at some point they continue this game in some type of way because it is very unique in some aspects but going back to the part where Dante had s3x with that woman was so her and her brother can be free. I mentioned it because you said you weren't sure who the guy was.
Thank you Evan Prince for talking about this Video Game in an honest, balanced, intelligent and insightful way. I myself am not a Catholic and this adaptation has an inconsistent theology that can be described as 'Off the walls crazy dawg." (I mean, Absolving Souls in Hell, I mean, It's a bit l8 for that m8). Dante defeating Death the way he did in the Video Game seems odd though one could interpret this as Dante accepting Christ since Yeshua/Jesus Christ is the only person who defeated Death. Other than that, this video has reignited a fear of Hell in me, and I think it's a healthy kind because as we all should know, "The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Wisdom". After seeing your video, I even took time yesterday to go to a book shop to find Dante's Poetry Epic. I found the books, the third part of the Divine Comedy and a book that is the entire Inferno/Divine Comedy. Again, I'm not a catholic and I highly disagree with works based Faith and Purgatory and I can tell their is genuine Beauty and self-reflective Truth deeply in grained in arguably every word Dante wrote. Because at times, Life really does feel like a Journey to Hell and back to find Paradise on the other side of the Journey. It's incredible how such a Journey can cause people like me to look at the filth of my life and endure through a Journey to be Redeemed and find Peace. I never really got myself very familiar with the Poem's story until now and I can see how impactful this text has been in Popular Culture alongside other texts like 'Paradise Lost', the Iilad, the Odyssey, Heart of Darkness and more. Imagery of souls burning in hell, reaching up for the boat, appears in Apocalypse Now. 'Over the Garden Wall' was a Junior version of Dante's Inferno (which I didn't know first time watching and even if it wasn't intentional, the story patterns are there) Dante is the name of a dog in 'Coco' Even comic Relief goofy scene stealing 'Indiana Jones' style Simon Pegg voiced Weasel, Buck, references the famous line "Abandon all Hope". Buck of all characters, I think, introduced me to a line about Hell. There's something profound about what happens after you've been through horror. If you grow in the way God intends you to grow, in a way that improves your character, You'll be transformed and blessed in such an astonishing way. So many people think life is a breeze but the Holy Bible itself never guarantees this. Have you read the Book of Job and the Book of Ecclesiastes? Even I, with my Good Health and gradual progress, am still facing severe trials in my life. Trials that feel like torment, but I'm noticing that commitment to Grace and Redemption and Truth helps to defeat all kinds of Trials and condemnations. That's the lesson anyone can take from the poem, the game and the animated adaptation. If you endure, you'll find Love. I could go on about how the peak of Heaven represents God's Love and the bottom of hell is pathetically cold. (Side note: A medievalist poet had a vision of the world being round. Take that Neil DeGrasse Tyson (Pray for him though :) )).
Thank you for sharing, and yes, we endure for Christ and find strength and love thro8gh that. Suffering is often a gift and a chance at growth and redemption.
Why is that the sometimes the most insightful and hopefully views of faith usually comes from non-believers and Godless works of art, Why so many man in churches are full of themselves and of certain of salvation while not truly understanding the words of the lord and never looking at their own sins. I find it ironic even, that someone who don't believe has more change to get to heaven, than the man who tough getting inside a church would magically make him the better man in all places, to the point they go around offending anyone who doesn't believe in what they do Hell! Once I talked to a guy who believes as christian he HAD to be rude towards other religions, because their "demons" wouldn't guarantee their salvations thus making his right to call them out in a way to convert people out of fear
I actually kind of really like that Dante actually tries to redeem himself,He actually believes that he can which I feel like that’s very inspirational he doesn’t give up. He goes on word and he also gets his redemption if there was ever a sequel.
45:25 There was a thing called Abraham's Bosom, which is essentially heaven before heaven became available. Heaven and hell are both holding places and are not permanent. It goes hell < lake of fire, and for saved people, it was Abraham's Bosom < Heaven < New Heaven/New Earth
As a follower of Christ myself, I agree with you and have no issue with this game. As long as people understand that Jesus didn’t give us a detailed description of Hell and that the Inferno is based on Dante’s imaginative depiction. I played the crap out of it as a teen on Xbox 360. My friend played GoW collection on PS3 and laughed when he saw me playing DI and used the lazy, “God of War clone” insult. I also played the DLC but can’t remember too much about it.
Oh an interesting point in the inferno poem is no one is repentant of their sins in their suffering state, only remorseful of how they suffer. Just a point on finding his mother in suicide woods
Great video man loved all of it. This game was panned because of marketing EA and Visceral sacrificed a goat at launch. Visceral was an amazing team they had such quality behind them and sadly EA canned them. Everything from graphics and that amazing sound design was just an awesome experience on my home theater a lot of games now a days have absolutely awful sound design and really disappointing to me that should be just as important I'm going off on a tangent here but this game deserves more recognition. Yes it is 100% a god of war clone but why is that a bad thing it plays incredibly well and tells an amazing story.
I'm little surprised you didn't mention the chains we break throughout the game. They were one of the best examples of foreshadowing in gaming I've seen.
You’re a fantastic commentator. Both in analysis and in how pleasing your voice is to listen to. A lot of analysis content lacks both of those factors, so great job!
So Alighieri wanted to make a hell as a commentary to what Christian governing bodies were really prioritizing as seeing "the worst sins". For financials to be so low in the rings should serve to illuminate that. And politicians lol like I get it it's funny, but violence and murder are what they are. Bonus point he didn't have the heart to write in his inspirations such as Socrates in any manner of suffering for being a non believer, wrote in a mildly dull ring of hell just for them. The movie was great, the art style changing with the levels of hell was cool but it seemed to degrade. Can't help but see Digimon when they go to the final ring. Wonderful video overall thank you.
Was a very solid game. The main knock people had against it was that it played like a game that people praised the gameplay of, which is dumb. As for as an adaptation. I've read Dante many times and from playing the game and watching the dev diaries at the time, while it does obviously tell its own story, they honestly clearly did their homework and understood what they were adapting. My biggest issue was how they pretty much ran out of ideas after Greed. That and no Purgatorio or Paradisio.
Really well done review! I've recently started a script for an installment for Megatronic Legacy. Originally it was going to be called "Shirai Ryu Crusaders" then changed to "Akuma" as it's loosely based off of Inferno with its own fictional adaptation of Hell with a similar journey as Dante went through. It's something I dabbled into in the past on my older channel, and plan to in the future. Keep up the good work, Evan!
This was an awesome watch! I was looking & this was the third video I came across that was very informative & related to the POEM! Great narration as well bud!
Damn this was such a great game to play. One of those games where the inclination to explore derived not merely from the possibility of combat rewards but from the narrative and intrigue that grew from what the player uncovered and the choices the player chose to make regarding them. If given similar treatment like the resident evil remakes it's a story and series that would be welcome in perpetuity.
It's not important to your analysis of the game, but for what it's worth, early in the video when describing Beatrice in the poem, you mentioned, "Dante had to make his way to his beloved wife in heaven." But poem/real Dante and Beatrice weren't married, in fact they only ever met twice, and she was married to someone else entirely. He just harbored a.. well frankly, kinda weird obsession with her, all things considered.
Alighieri is such a weird fellow, He wrote probably the first ever fanfic, no, the FIRST ever fanfic with characters from different famous stories (this has a name but I forgot now) Then he wrote all his rivals enemies and such suffering on the deepest pits of hell, all while his cool original character was guiding him so heaven so he could met his lover that wasn't even his lover, just a woman he saw sometimes and didn't even approach It's a very insightful story, it has its deep moments and makes you question and realize and ponder and all that jazz, but when you look at the writer you understand why at the time people disliked the story and tough of Dante as somewhat of a weirdoe Imagine writing yourself as the hero of your own epic tale lmao
I enjoyed the game very much. Way back when, as a fan of animation, I had high hopes for the Animated Epic companion piece, but I remember it being bad back then, and, upon trying to watch it today, shut it off 15 minutes in and searched for a retrospective on the game instead. Which you have handily provided. Thank you very much for covering this, as well as for giving your own perspectives.
I found your videos about a week ago, and have been so impressed with your presentation, delivery, and depth of your extensive retrospectives. It’s also been refreshing to see a creator that isn’t a misanthrope, or lives in r/aethiesm
Also the movie is animated in every chapter by different artists and artstyles Literally Dante the anime i think they got like 2 famous ones from Japan but maybe im wrong
I played and finished this game at 14. My Little brother was 12 and playing it along side me. He never finished it tho, it was too hard for him. It was a good game and my first introduction to the poem.
I think one of Dante’s redeeming traits even from the beginning of the game is his unwillingness to let others be damned with him. When he refuses to die and fights death, when he’s yelling at Karen (yes I know that’s almost definitely not how it’s spelled but it’s funny) about how he’ll give his soul for that of Beatrice
Love the quantified statement from the opening., To often sin has taken over man's mind because man no longer accepts that emotions are the source of sin.
Also fighting lucider with his mastodon d1(k flopping around was hilarious and within the games context an appropriate dichotomy of both absurd and reasonable in the games setting. Hilarious stuff.
I honestly couldn't begin to imagine what a sequel would look like or play like. After his escape into Purgatory, the story is a climb up the mountain to reach the bottom of Paradise. There wouldn't be much gameplay to speak of except it becoming a walking simulator while being exposited at and it would end up being totally different than literally fighting your way to salvation through the depths of Hell.
given that purgatory is all about repenting of sins via them burning away/suffering through the absolution process, i think there's a lot to make a game with. dante, having acknowledged his sins and sincerely wishing to repent, now must do the hard work of that repentance.
3:54 Its probably discussed later in the video, but the reason why Beatrice is taken to hell and has such a...relationship with Lucifer is because she wagered her soul to the Devil that Dante wouldn't betray her while on the Crusades, which he did, so when the man who's sister (or was it wife, I forgot) Dante fucked and then killed, murdered Beatrice, her soul was forfeit because Dante failed to keep his oath of fidelity. So this game ended up being as much about Dante's repentance as it was trying to save Beatrice's soul as well. It is worth noting that the original saga were as written by Dante Alighieri, was more of a political diatribe than anything else. Many of the figures in the deeper parts of hell, aside from the various biblical figures, were Dante's political enemies that had forced him out of Florence into exile and had since died by the time he wrote the poem. In fact, the poems were so well received that the Medicis actually rescinded his exile even though one of their own was featured prominently in the Circle of Greed. 12:30 I think that's the best way to describe this game. Its weird but its fun. It is nowhere near the best game in the genre but it is fun. 1:19:17 You kinda skipped over the big revelation here, which (as you probably can figure out but whatever) is that Dante was actually dead the entire game, and that he was not in Hell of his own volition as the earlier scenes imply, he was damned to hell for his sins, and its only after the souls he's absolved take pity for him that he's allowed into Purgatory.
45:10 This is a reference to the apocrypha gospel story where you have Satan gloat for killing Christ, and Hades (hell personified) damning Satan for ruining everything. Later in that story, you see that Hades sustenance is from the souls who go to hell and that Satan damned them because Christ came down to rescue all those ancestors before him.
When it comes to the real stories of Dante’s inferno basically a mix’s of Christian beliefs,Greek mythology and what was going on in Italy where back then in the 12th century they were going by states where people were either going for the emperor and the church and he writes mainly running in hell and praising himself but good story and good game
In the IV Circle of Greed gold pearls are better than gold coins, because unlike coins, which are made by man (Fraud), pearls are made by Nature (example the golden touch of Dionysus and the natural magic water that can turn everything into perfect gold). In Greed as monsters there are: Scorpions (serpentine), Giants, Oreads, Talos, Salamanders and Beasts (both humanoid). Who else could be the Guardian of Greed, the Dragon Ladon (Golden Apples of the Garden of the Hesperides)? The dimension is a golden Pandemonium: boiling golden lake for the damned who push great golden stones (Avaricious and Prodigals always in boiling gold). Together with Cerberus, also Giants, Octopus and Beasts (both humanoid), Satyrs, Dryads and Cyclopes guarding Gluttony. A dimension of clay sea with clay rain, with the damned just like in a clay soup. Who can be the Guardian of Lust/Pride, Python the Dragon (the Dragon as a symbol of the Vampire and therefore of Lust/Pride)? The II Circle of Lust/Pride is divided into storm of air for the Lustful and sea of snow for the Prideful. In Lust/Pride as monsters there are: Serpents and Moray Eels (both humanoid), Gorgons (with a serpentine tail), Lamia, Ophiotaurs (with a serpentine tail), Vampires (draconid), Sirens/Mermaids (winged with a serpentine tail), Naiads, Dracaenas, Nereids and Mermen/Tritons (all four with two serpentine tails), Gorgotaurs (with two serpentine tails), Dragons (classic and serpentine), Crocodiles and Lizards (both humanoid), Ichthyocentaurs (with two equine legs and one/two serpentine tail/tails), Pegasi, Lobsters and Beasts (all three humanoid), Giants, Hippocampi (serpentine), Lampads. Replace the Wrathful with the Envious in the Styx, and put the Wrathful within Dis with the Heretics! (Example Phlegyas, Fire of Ares, Thera's Bane, Atlas Quake, Blades of Exile) The Devils's Heresy is Wrath (example Lucifer's Heresy of Wrath which made the Devils wrathful towards the Angels, causing the War in Heaven)! The City of Dis is practically divided into three Rings: Wrathful (heretics against others), Pagans (heretics against themselves) and Heretics (heretics against God). "The City of Dis held Hell's deepest secrets and the worst violent and treacherous sinners. The fallen angels guarded it's walls and flaunted his kingdom." In Heresy as monsters there are: Golems, Giants, Griffons, Vultures, Eagles, Beasts (all four humanoid). Fire in the City of Heresy (Wrathful, Pagans and Heretics always in burning magma). The Leviathan is the Prince of Envy, who destroys and devours everything. The Bog of the Forgotten from God of War 2/Ascension (along with the Barbarian Hammer, Nemesis Whip, Charon's Wrath, Scourge of Erinys) is a realm of Envy/Sloth. Now Keres, Giants, Bears, Owls, Hawks, Wyverns, Basilisks, Crabs, Sharks, Turtles, Toads, Bats, Crows and Beasts (all twelve humanoid), Skeletons, Wraiths, Necromancers are the ones to watch over the Styx marsh. “See the souls over whom Envy has prevailed. In the warm bath of the sun they were once hateful; down here in the black sludge of the river Styx do they wish they had never been born.” “Souls indignant! How many up there now count themselves kings, that here shall lie like worms in the mire, leaving their condemnations far behind!” "The Styx, a toxic marsh. Those awash with Envy drowned again and again, choking on their own venom." It is my well-founded and proven belief that Dante by Wrath he meant Envy (with Sloth) and by Heresy he meant Wrath (with Heresy). Using Cacus as an example, shouldn't the Centaurs be placed not in the VII Circle of Violence but in the V Circle of Envy? Phlegias is the Guardian of Wrath/Heresy (VI Circle) and the Hydra (now a serpentine Poison Giantess) is the Guardian of Envy/Sloth (V Circle). Guarding the I Ring of Violence are Ravens and Beasts (both humanoid), Minotaurs, Werewolves and Giants, in the II Ring of Violence are Harpies (humanoid) and Hounds, in the III Ring of Violence are Colossi and Lions (humanoid). Sand in the Desert of Blasphemy (Blasphemers, Sodomites and Usurers always in burning ash). In the I Ring (Caina) of Treachery, among the Traitors of Relatives, there are also the Traitors of Friends (because a loved friend becomes similar to a loved relative). In Fraud, to torment the Hypocrites, under their gold there is not lead but mercury (much more symbolic).
44:11 I believe you're right on that, mostly because from what I'm aware, the cross Peter was on was still upright. He was just nailed to it upside down.
"you're life has been too soft" Me "sho' nuff" "You're too soft" Me, again "git eeemm" I absolutely love this game, and along with God of War, can be credited with bringing me back to gaming. I was even able to basically no hit the highest difficulty in the day, and desperately wanted the sequel to see how they represented purgatario
Even tough God of war is objectively the better game I still like Dante's more. You can dodge out of combos and some quality of life things make the game less infuriating God of war at times would stunlocked animation lock roll lock heavy attack lock and for some reason it always made me fume when I had to do something before pulling a lever, and every time I pulled a lever I was hit with quick hits telling me "not now!" And it annoys me like a children poking my arm non stop. Idk I may have brain damage
Love when you press triangle once in God of war and is forced to watch as the quick zombie swings his 2 frame attack that will spiral in you being stunlocked into 3 trolls and one of those chacal like soldiers
They need to remake this but add the lords of hell of each ring like Beelzebub in gluttony, Satan in wrath, and of course keep Lucifer in the last. Add more skins. Take away some over the top stuff of the designs and make them more like the times they were set in. Make the levels much more bigger and weirdly more open world. But keep the music, story, voices, action (maybe add more skills). Basically keep half and add another larger half. But I mean if this was brought back then it would be canceled because of Twitter and people easily offended by everything. This game is just too good to be left behind.
Just started the game, I’m in shores of Acheron. Also hope to read the book simultaneously, then come back to this video 😄 This story has interested me for a while so time to be fully immersed!
Lowkey what people dont get from this Game, the art/designs of this Game are made by Wayne Barlowe (artist about evolutionary "what ifs" Who made designs for Hellboy, Harry Potter 3 and Avatar Cameron) Who after this Game he did a "trilogy" of books (paintings and Story) about Hell and a demon Who wants to Rebel Satan Pure imaginary terror i would LOVE a Game about Wayne Barlowe's Hell would be better than this Game believe me there are A LOT OF Monsters and cities
I loved this game as a younger adult, funny enough it helped me on my first deployment it took my mind off the everything going on lol. Also it's amazing to find out you are also a devout Christian.
Man they really throw everything at the wall at the end in that last circle. Dante's like 'yeah put the thieves in there, politicians, people who fart in crowded elevators etc' 😂
The only game I would love a sequel for more than this one is eternal darkness, but this was one of the best games ever, even though I think it was just a way for Xbox to have there own version of god of war
I get that you censor images and so on but why censor some of the stuff you are saying? Mad annoying had go back just to understand what you said. In fact , not a single thing needed be blurred out or censored since there are whole gameplays and cutscenes of the this game on TH-cam already without being dmonetized. Absolutely amazing video and commentary otherwise.
Interesting that this was too much for TH-cam considering the grotesque violence depicted in GoW (greek saga)... I'm not much of a fan of games like that but I'm sure there's a market for this kind of stuff. Never was much of a fan of the poem either, too much catholic influence for my taste, but, it does shine a light on the papacy and the problems attached with the church using its position, power snd influence for political reasons, which I see as a big problem even in the modern days, orobably more so than before. And I think that they had to take more liberties with this than GoW had to with both Greek and Norse mythology. As I remember, the poem was a journey or a "tour" rather than a fight. Just walk around, seeing all the horrors of hell. But I digeess. This is certainly a bit much for me, though I'm lretty sure this is mild in comparison to what hell is actually like. I just tend to not venture into the realms of trying to earn salvation, especialy posthumus. But, there is a message that does speak to the real wrongdoings and sins, and, if even one person gets a conviction of something they're doing and commits to fight the flesh and make a change for the better, putting effort into their faith and walk with God, I'm all for it. Otherwise, it's a hack and slash game with religious symbolism, allegory and achetypes. Overall, good video. Definitely 1.5 hours bot wasted. :)
I feel very similar to what you described, actually. It is very catholic, but catholicism was all there was back then! Protestantism was not a concept until the 1800s so several hundred years after the poem was written. Thanks so much for your support!
Absolutely fantastic video. Although I am obviously anti christian, anti Jewish and anti Muslim.. this was a fantastic analysis of the themes presented in this game. You are truly a next level game reviewer.
Dante's inferno is one of those game i like to call "throw shit at the PS3 era wall and see what sticks" A LOT of games around that time were rather hit or miss with a lot of truely fantastic gameplay features and ideas. another i particularly enjoy is called "Folklore" a surprisingly in depth game for the time trying to get along with the motion controls of the PS3 controller. was popular for that due to it, but similar to Dante's inferno it was an incredibly interesting game that received more bad rep than it should have in my opinion.
A, “to be continued,” we never got. I remember being stoked for this game when it came out. God of War was a favorite of mine, so I was excited for a new IP. I wouldn’t want a remaster. I want to see what this game was meant to be, as I remember reading prior to it original release that its production was rushed in the end to hit deadlines as it was HYPED up.
The funny thing is in the original story Beowulf never strips down for the fight with Grendel
I loved making this one too!
god of war, dantes inferno and darksiders, each are true GEMS
We got so much in that era
i miss edgy era like Disneymovies in games are better IN SOME WAY LOL
the edgy has better art, story and tone xD
I'd love a remaster as well, but I think you're underestimating how much EA would want to bury this game. Certain elements of the Circle of Violence and who's damned to suffer there would pretty much gaurentee EA tries to memoryhole like this game never happened.
Im not sure I get what you're referring to, would you mind elaborating?
It was re-published with the new title "The Divine Comedy" in 1555, but it was written by Dante between 1304 and 1327.
Yes this was an error on my part, thanks for the insight!

Not even akin to the modern god of war?
@@ripdeyu I would be very but pleasantly surprised if EA put in the effort to remake Dante’s inferno like modern GOW. But then it’s arguably not a “remake” but a full remaster.
I wouldn't say it's out of date it still works vary well just need the right team to makeit work well and not have a ton of stuff off screen
A remake of this game with a free camera would be so damn good.
it'd be soooo sick if they remade this. the story is classic, and they could do so much better now
Oh they'd censor and alter it to high hell for the sake of "The message..."
@@draketheduelist Well put.
I dunno mane
Look what happened to GoW remakes started good now we have annoying mediocrity and a wahmen owning you
I'd still hit freya tho

My favorite game of all time, played it all the way through more than I can count. Ironically kind of a comfort game lol
Despite the lackluster segment that followed it, the shot heading into the City of Dis is an amazing moment.
Really shows Visceral at their best.
Love your old comment too on the previous upload brother. Appreciate you

The environmental and conceptual design of this game is what I remember and appreciate the most.
Alice: Madness Returns was GOATed as well tbh. Environment design, costume, aesthetics and story were great.
Incredible analysis and explanation of the subject matter. Dante's Inferno is a fond gem from an era when EA would take risks with games like this, Dead Space and American McGee's Alice. It's great to see such an effort put into chronicling it and was a truly fun video to watch. Subbed.
Yeah EA used to cook huh
One of my favorites. Just an FYI, I have a Series X and you are still able to buy it through Microsoft's store. I'm halfway through it again after over a decade.

I'd love to, actually. Splinter Cell was a favorite and is 100% on my radar.
@@evprince That's great, it's a really interesting franchise because of how Micheal Ironside pushed the character to be more than just the typical growling amoral killer.
This is such a brilliant game. I remember being absolutely blown away by the voice acting
The dialogue about Jesus going and taking a bunch of souls to heaven occurs way back in the poem, when they sre in Limbo.
One of my favorite games from the PS3 era and my first PLATINUM. Great video mate, keep up the good work!👍👏
Thank you Evan Prince for talking about this Video Game in an honest, balanced, intelligent and insightful way.
I myself am not a Catholic and this adaptation has an inconsistent theology that can be described as 'Off the walls crazy dawg."
(I mean, Absolving Souls in Hell, I mean, It's a bit l8 for that m8).
'Over the Garden Wall' was a Junior version of Dante's Inferno (which I didn't know first time watching and even if it wasn't intentional, the story patterns are there)
Dante is the name of a dog in 'Coco'
Even comic Relief goofy scene stealing 'Indiana Jones' style Simon Pegg voiced Weasel, Buck, references the famous line "Abandon all Hope".
I find it ironic even, that someone who don't believe has more change to get to heaven, than the man who tough getting inside a church would magically make him the better man in all places, to the point they go around offending anyone who doesn't believe in what they do
Hell! Once I talked to a guy who believes as christian he HAD to be rude towards other religions, because their "demons" wouldn't guarantee their salvations thus making his right to call them out in a way to convert people out of fear
Great Video man! They did Beatrice dirty!😂
I had the PSp version during my deployment to Afghanistan. Really good memories of this game.
Crazy how they where able to port this game to a PSP, the graphics are way worst but that style makes it still a very decent game overall.
I actually kind of really like that Dante actually tries to redeem himself,He actually believes that he can which I feel like that’s very inspirational he doesn’t give up. He goes on word and he also gets his redemption if there was ever a sequel.
Dante's so fucking badass I wish catholic people existed irl
Only a few hundred views for this? The algorithm better pushes you soon. More people need to see this

There was a thing called Abraham's Bosom, which is essentially heaven before heaven became available.
I absolutely love this game! the visuals are incredible.
Underrated game and still looks good to this day. Cinematic without overloading you as the player with 15 minute cut-scenes done today.
You did an amazing job on this video. Seriously great work
Thank you so much!
So refreshing to hear a TH-camr who hasn’t abandoned the faith.

There's tons of them brother mane
I'm little surprised you didn't mention the chains we break throughout the game. They were one of the best examples of foreshadowing in gaming I've seen.
You’re a fantastic commentator. Both in analysis and in how pleasing your voice is to listen to. A lot of analysis content lacks both of those factors, so great job!
Wow, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
A pal of mine recently gave this to me along with some other ps3 games and honestly I’ve been really enjoying it it’s hit a sweet spot for me
This was an awesome watch!
Alighieri is such a weird fellow, He wrote probably the first ever fanfic, no, the FIRST ever fanfic with characters from different famous stories (this has a name but I forgot now) Then he wrote all his rivals enemies and such suffering on the deepest pits of hell, all while his cool original character was guiding him so heaven so he could met his lover that wasn't even his lover, just a woman he saw sometimes and didn't even approach
It's a very insightful story, it has its deep moments and makes you question and realize and ponder and all that jazz, but when you look at the writer you understand why at the time people disliked the story and tough of Dante as somewhat of a weirdoe
Imagine writing yourself as the hero of your own epic tale lmao
In a way Dante is the father of sonichu and the loud house:revamped and it's insane
Glad you liked it! I enjoyed the animated movie myself but it was hardly a masterpiece
I found your videos about a week ago, and have been so impressed with your presentation, delivery, and depth of your extensive retrospectives.
It’s also been refreshing to see a creator that isn’t a misanthrope, or lives in r/aethiesm
Honestly one of my favourite games from the Golden PS3 era. I never understood how this game was so underrated, I would love a remake.
Also the movie is animated in every chapter by different artists and artstyles
Literally Dante the anime i think they got like 2 famous ones from Japan but maybe im wrong
Great video. Jus finished the game today and was searching for more lore reviews. I will watch the animated series on this weekend.
This game is one of my favorites, just finished it for the 3rd time yesterday on my series x
Love the quantified statement from the opening.,
To often sin has taken over man's mind because man no longer accepts that emotions are the source of sin.
And yet ironically love as an emotion we are taught to embrace.
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but the intro boss battle is definitely a reference to Castlevania, all the way down to the background
The setting of the Divine Comedy is the 1300’s not the 1500’s.
Finally found another guy who’s amazing at doing retrospective videos. This was really insightful!
Whoah! Great retro, awesome analysis both on gameplay and The Divine's Comedy. 👍

This is a reference to the apocrypha gospel story where you have Satan gloat for killing Christ, and Hades (hell personified) damning Satan for ruining everything. Later in that story, you see that Hades sustenance is from the souls who go to hell and that Satan damned them because Christ came down to rescue all those ancestors before him.
So excited to see a video about this game!
Everyone should watch the animated movie if you haven't already, its awesome!
Man...Grim Reaper and Charon were just doing their jobs. Rude.
Very based. I remember really enjoying this game when it came out.
I wish they would remake this whole game, update the graphics, mechanics, etc. I absolutely loved this game
When it comes to the real stories of Dante’s inferno basically a mix’s of Christian beliefs,Greek mythology and what was going on in Italy where back then in the 12th century they were going by states where people were either going for the emperor and the church and he writes mainly running in hell and praising himself but good story and good game
Thank you to make this retrospective.
As a fan of the Divine Comedy AND this game, mad thanks for the vid, man; keep killin' it 👍 😉
In the IV Circle of Greed gold pearls are better than gold coins, because unlike coins, which are made by man (Fraud), pearls are made by Nature (example the golden touch of Dionysus and the natural magic water that can turn everything into perfect gold).
(Example Phlegyas, Fire of Ares, Thera's Bane, Atlas Quake, Blades of Exile)
The Devils's Heresy is Wrath (example Lucifer's Heresy of Wrath which made the Devils wrathful towards the Angels, causing the War in Heaven)!
The City of Dis is practically divided into three Rings: Wrathful (heretics against others), Pagans (heretics against themselves) and Heretics (heretics against God).
"The City of Dis held Hell's deepest secrets and the worst violent and treacherous sinners. The fallen angels guarded it's walls and flaunted his kingdom."
In Heresy as monsters there are: Golems, Giants, Griffons, Vultures, Eagles, Beasts (all four humanoid).
In the warm bath of the sun they were once hateful; down here in the black sludge of the river Styx do they wish they had never been born.”
“Souls indignant! How many up there now count themselves kings, that here shall lie like worms in the mire, leaving their condemnations far behind!”
"The Styx, a toxic marsh. Those awash with Envy drowned again and again, choking on their own venom."
It is my well-founded and proven belief that Dante by Wrath he meant Envy (with Sloth) and by Heresy he meant Wrath (with Heresy).

I believe you're right on that, mostly because from what I'm aware, the cross Peter was on was still upright. He was just nailed to it upside down.

I absolutely love this game, and along with God of War, can be credited with bringing me back to gaming.
I was even able to basically no hit the highest difficulty in the day, and desperately wanted the sequel to see how they represented purgatario
Even tough God of war is objectively the better game I still like Dante's more. You can dodge out of combos and some quality of life things make the game less infuriating
God of war at times would stunlocked animation lock roll lock heavy attack lock and for some reason it always made me fume when I had to do something before pulling a lever, and every time I pulled a lever I was hit with quick hits telling me "not now!" And it annoys me like a children poking my arm non stop. Idk I may have brain damage
This BEST part of this game...being able to dodge out of your own combos.........
Love when you press triangle once in God of war and is forced to watch as the quick zombie swings his 2 frame attack that will spiral in you being stunlocked into 3 trolls and one of those chacal like soldiers
Hate to admit that I’ve never actually played this. However, got to learn something about the game. Great video, Evan.
Next to Doom, this is my second favorite game where you slay demons from Hell.
Just started the game, I’m in shores of Acheron. Also hope to read the book simultaneously, then come back to this video 😄 This story has interested me for a while so time to be fully immersed!
Hey I'd love to hear an update on this when you're finished!
Lowkey what people dont get from this Game, the art/designs of this Game are made by Wayne Barlowe (artist about evolutionary "what ifs" Who made designs for Hellboy, Harry Potter 3 and Avatar Cameron)
Who after this Game he did a "trilogy" of books (paintings and Story) about Hell and a demon Who wants to Rebel Satan
Pure imaginary terror i would LOVE a Game about Wayne Barlowe's Hell would be better than this Game believe me there are A LOT OF Monsters and cities
The PSP: Am I A Joke to you? 🤣
I love this game so much. I wish they would port it to PC, or make a remaster for all platforms
I loved this game as a younger adult, funny enough it helped me on my first deployment it took my mind off the everything going on lol. Also it's amazing to find out you are also a devout Christian.
Amen 🙏
Praying one day we could get Dante's Purgatori
Your channel is so underrated
I bought this game as a kid because I loved scythes as a weapon and this game had I think one of the cooler scythe movesets.
@@evprince good point, I failed to take that into consideration.
3:22 because you missed out on it, i'll say it. Visceral's Dante is...well, visceral
Yeah, this game was nuts. Unbaptised babies, grotesquely bloated demons, the cages of people doysed in molten gold. I loved the look of it.
Absolutely fantastic video. Although I am obviously anti christian, anti Jewish and anti Muslim.. this was a fantastic analysis of the themes presented in this game. You are truly a next level game reviewer.
1:09:20 kinda sus ngl, dare i say among us
Kinda mogus
So the entire economy is going to hell because interest is how everything is done😅
"if you look closely you'll see Disney executives and congressmen there"
me: *subscribes*
How do I mail you a pop filter?
Good video by the way. Love this game. I replay Dante's Inferno once a year.
