Oh I bet that was awesome Lewis - I've only seen a class 20 in LT livery in real life -but even that was awesome looking! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Funnily enough Sam I had the original GWR Pannier bought for me in 1972, when I was...... erm 11, and remember it was £5 then, brand new......so that would be over £60 today, yeah? Great review, very enjoyable, thankyou.
Man, for a loco that is now 40 years old it still runs and pulls amazingly. Great video Sam, really enjoyed this one. Can't wait to see if the train can survive the fall from your window! Keep up the great work! Almost to 22.5k subs! :D
Thanks a lot mate - I agree, I'm always so impressed by how well these old locos run, with little more than just a service! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam. Yes, London Transport did paint their locos in a quite deep maroon. The safety valve casing is known as a "Bonnet" and houses two safety valves. The chimney cap should be copper. The older loco models used to have a flangeless driving wheel to negotiate the very tight curves of yesteryear, whereas most now have flanges on all wheels, except the 9F, which has flangeless drivers as does the full sized loco. It's nice to see the, "less ordinary" locos etc. Regards, Alan.
Thanks a lot Alan, yeah I had suspected that was the case - and thanks for letting me know about the Bonnet, I'll need to remember that term! Thanks for the info, Sam :)
I love the Matchbox-on-Wheels (Pannier Tank Engine's nickname) no matter what colour she is. Red, BR Black and GWR Green are all good colours in my book. In your Dock Shunter Video, I spotted a mix of steamies (Tender and Tank Engines alike) and an 08 shunter in BR Blue. Among the steam engines, I easily recognised Lord of the Isles and the Tri-ang Princess engine. You should have included the train spotting part, but I'll let you off.
Very interesting review Sam, the livery on these Panniers was as you remember more of a Maroon than this bright Red applied to this one, but for what they were designed for they represent great value and durability for younger hands to enjoy the Hobby...Regards...Bob
Well done, Mr Sam! Quirky little model/toy, that. Loving the livery (anything GWR in a non-GWR livery is a big 👍 for me haha!) When you mention the safety valves on GWR locos I believe they called the brass cover a "bonnet"....some others called it a "trumpet", but the bonnet name is more common. Keep at it!
Hi Sam, your right on the shade of red. LT red was a lot darker, darker even than LMS crimson lake, almost a burgandy. But still a nice and unusual model. I saw a couple of them in service back in the very late 60's at Neasden depot where a number of them were based. Jon
Thanks a lot Jon - yeah something told me it should have been darker, but still nice as a novelty! Oh very nice - I bet these looked gorgeous in real life! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
They have a pannier tank in that liverie on a heritage railway in buckfastleigh, Devon. I go camping in buckfastleigh every summer, it’s amazing. Anyway, amazing model! -Charles
Thanks Charles! I have been there, but I don't remember seeing her - I must have missed it, but yeah - it is an amazing railway! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Despite living on the other side of the world, I am a huge fan of both the Pannier (my favourite Thomas character is Duck) and London Transport (my friends describe me as a London Underground nerd), so I really like this loco, and also your review of it! Well done! Now, where can I get one... I do own a Triang Pannier (which I scored for $10, so about £5), one of the 1975 ones with a smoke unit. It's missing the top of its funnel and the body is sans any decoration (no GWR or numbers on the cab), but it's one of my favourite locos and I love it very much. Your reviews are always great, and I thoroughly enjoy watching them! -Duck
Ooh that's great Duck - I'm a huge fan of them too! Blimey, you did great to get that so cheaply - even if it's not perfect! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hello Sam, I should have left you a comment on this video nearly 3 months ago. I love the review of the Vintage Hornby Railways Pannier Tank No.L90 in London Transport Maroon livery, she looks immaculate, in sort of near mint condition and runs very well for a 40 year old model. Didn't you know that there were 2 Great Western Pannier Tanks that worked on London Transport were both numbered L.90? The first L.90 was No.7711, but unfortunately she was scrapped in 1961, the second L.90 replaced 7711 was No.7760, she's preserved and located at the Tyseley Locomotive Works in Birmingham awaiting overhaul. Onces again, a wonderful review. 10/10 5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 2 thumbs up. 👍👍 Kind regards Jordan Shingler 😉
Hi Jordan, no worries mate - glad you enjoyed this anyway, yes I really enjoyed the livery on this one too! I did not know this - that's very interesting! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Your welcome always Sam. I love such vintage models. Bought many of beautiful older German steam and diesel locos like new produced in the former East Germany (DDR) 30 to 50 years ago. Love them all very much.
I think the chimney cap, safety valve cover the bunker steps and a few other bits have been painted by a previous owner as I bought one after your train fair haul and It came with a red safety valve cover my chimney cap was missing but as the gold matches on yours I think its safe to say its a repaint. You bought this with a J83 (Green British Rail) for £43 (14 minutes in on Train Fair Loot: December 2017)
OOh really? That's very interesting! Yes, looking at some photos online, that appears to be correct - well spotted mate! :D Blimey so that's closer to £22 each - a pretty good reduction there then! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam. Despite the lack of detail and quality (quite appropriate for her era), she is a delightful little loco. I would have liked a closer look at the GWR green loco, just for comparison.
Very nice engine, someone I know owns a few of the old Panniers. I would guess that the reason Hornby made it bright red is because the proper colour might have made it expensive to produce at the time. And I may buy a YO-box as they do look interesting. =D
Thanks a lot Ted - yeah that's almost certainly true - and plus in those days, these were really just toys - so they would probably have just used what they had, rather than trying to find the right shade! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I always stay till the very end of the video I’m never bored and always enjoy your vids I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration now I have a railway I’m proud of 🚂🚋🚋🚋
Not sure if I'm reading this wrong, or I simply don't understand. But in your rankings, the pannier seems to have the highest actual score, yet is only scoring 3rd. Probably my own mistake but thought I would queiry it Love the videos, keep up the incredible work :)
Good afternoon, Sam! I have heard of a GWR prairie tank in London Transport livery that runs on a heritage line somewhere. I believe its number is L150.
Awesome video Sam! I swear, I have no idea how u can get use to that electronic like sound these old engines make. They always scare me like that. I know u take care of them really well, but still. The sound is just really scary. Lol xD
Oh don't tell that for every train review we re going to see a YOBOX advert. Also you seem to like your triang locos, I mostly go for Hornby or Bachmann. KOOTPGB
haha nope - they're just sponsoring me for this week. I know it's a bit intrusive, but it means more funding for my channel, so that I can keep doing new reviews and updating my equipment! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've got the standard GWR version of this loco, they do run quite well for the age. Your right that the red shade isn't quite dark enough but it still looks nice. That wagon that kept derailing, did it have those nasty Hornby square axle wheels as I find they can come of the rails quite a lot. If you take a close look at the flange on those types you will find is is not always round having lumps and bumps causing problems on points.
That's good to hear Rob - yes they usually are very good runners! Yes that is true with that kind of wheel - they're definitely not great! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm surprised such a small engine has a blind middle axle! 4:33 The real London transport Panniers were in more of a Maroon, and had the number placed where the side window starts to curve. But I do like the bright red. It really speaks "London Transport"! They were acquired by Lodnon transport in the 1956 to work ballast and engineering trains until 1971. 6 of them survive, including L90! you should run those GWR "siphon" mail cars more often!they look good with the LT pannier!
Actually someone (previous owner?) upgraded the paint work on that one, do to i never saw another one of these with any gold/brass painted details, but it looks good with it. And yes the Bachmann's version is much darker maroon,( I hope I can get one of those once).
Thanks mate! Yes indeed, lots of the tri-ang 0-6-0s had the same (or slightly modified) chassis - they were very economical back then! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
You put 7.76 instead of 7.20 in the rankings ;). Anyway I wanted to ask you if you could recomend a small goods loco.Something from the 1960s maybe? I am also very keen on your videos as they help me learn English in a fun and an interesting way! You allways know how to impress me!
Ahh sorry about that mate - don't know how I managed that! Ooh that's a tricky one - how about the tri-ang style Jinty, those are really lovely! They also did 08 shunters too! That's great to hear mate - thanks for your lovely comment, Sam :)
Hi Sam, great video as always! I ordered a new class 55 deltic yesterday in the be blue! "The kings own Scottish borderer" Have no idea when its coming but I'm excited😂
Hello there Sam great to see the pannier tank on the layout um can have a great Western running session and have the pannier tank in that running session please?
London Transport ey? Gorgeous! Always like London transport! Would you mind re-reviewing the Albert hall? Wouldn’t mind a in-depth review of her, showing detail, history, ect ect! It’s okay if you don’t want to! Just I’m getting one so wouldn’t mind a mode “this is how it is” review! Thanks mate! Your mate! -Sam! :D
Yeah absolutely - I love it too! I can think about redoing the old Hall - but I did do tonnes of vids on those already! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Have you seen the 1978 Hornby catalogue for this? The locomotive in the set has a much nicer, glossier finish, which I'm guessing is one of Hornbys pre-production models. I also think that the one you've got there is split from this set as it was never available separately, hence the GWR on the box.:)
That's pretty interesting - if you google the model though, all or most of them are matte like this, don't think it's very rare or anything! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks a lot mate - glad you enjoyed those! :D Yeah sure - I've already done a few gwr sessions, but I'd be glad to do another some time! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ooh fantastic - great choice of favourite, they are lovely! :D That's fair enough - the GWR is definitely the more original livery, Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have a dcc converted Lima version of the pannier in the L.N.E.R green, however it has difficulty moving even when it was dc, should i replace it with a cd conversion?
Hi mate, ahh yes that can be an issue - most likely you'll find that a CD motor won't easily fit into a lima ringfield, at least not without serious modification! Have you tried giving it a thorough clean and service?? Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Just in case you didn’t know St. Machan is the patron saint of Sodor and like St. George he has a day and that day is the 30th of April every year
HI sam just been surfing ebay and there is a BRAND NEW class 37 in colas rail livery for the current bid £34 and a bachmann 57 freightliner £47 both with no current bids all the best alfie
Sam, do you have any information regarding a different version of the Hornby red pannier tank? I've just bought one; its the open ended cab style, I don't recognise the logo on it. The only thing I have found out is that it's catalogue number R073, released only in 1993 and it's extremely rare....
I actually picked one of these up today along with a few cars for my collection! Gotta say I love it
I remember that model appearing in the Hornby catalogue. I feel old LOL
Ooh really? Blimey - at least your memory isn't going though?? ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I have seen a GWR Pannier Tank in the LT Livery on one of the Steam On The Metropolitan Line specials, when I was younger, along with some others too.
Oh I bet that was awesome Lewis - I've only seen a class 20 in LT livery in real life -but even that was awesome looking! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Amazing video Sam! I have always loved panniers (especially the 57xx) Hope you have an excellent day! :)
Thanks very much mate - me too! Hope you have a good one too mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
That is an wonderfully little engine
Thanks mate, really glad you liked her! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Lavers 454 agreed
Sam'sTrains looks like Duck from Thomas & friends
Jmream2 Jmream yeah
Jmream2 Jmream yes that is what duck was based on
At the South Devon Railway they have a pannier tank in that livery and (just like the model) it looks amazing in it!
Oh do they?! I never saw that one - that sounds fantastic though! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I was just about to mention her also!
They have kept her in such lovely condition, definitely worth a look.
Funnily enough Sam I had the original GWR Pannier bought for me in 1972, when I was...... erm 11, and remember it was £5 then, brand new......so that would be over £60 today, yeah? Great review, very enjoyable, thankyou.
Oh blimey - imagine £5 for a loco today, or even £60 brand new for that matter!
Really glad you enjoyed it mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
If I remember correctly, wasn't Duck from Thomas and Friends based off the Pannier tank or no?
Yes he was, you're right! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Yes it was
Mega holmes97 yup
Mega holmes97 but duck is grestwestern
Thats the first thing i thought of lol
10:32 You tried to sneak the bullman past whilst I was busy watching the naughty wagon, well played sir, well played. :)
haha yes I'm getting more creative with my Bullman-hiding techniques ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I am still loving old videos as well of the new
Thanks so much!! :D

That is one beautiful little engine!
Thanks so much Ethan - I think she is too :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I love the beautiful livery of the London Transport more than the standard green! Another fine video Sam.
Thanks a lot mate - I might be inclined to agree, though it's hard to choose! Glad you liked it,
Sam :)

Thanks a lot Bob, me too - it's so unusual! Thanks for the info mate, and yes you're absolutely right!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Nice little loco, would love to get a hold of the bachmann variant.
Thanks mate - me too actually, that one really does look like something special! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
WHY IS THIS SMOTHER THAN MY EAST COST HST???
still love it keep it up!!
Harvey
haha! I do my best to service mine as often as I can - so she's running pretty well! :D

Last year when I went there was the first tim I saw, so I think it’s new. Also, the red on that model is a lot lighter then then real thing. :)

Hi Jordan, no worries mate - glad you enjoyed this anyway, yes I really enjoyed the livery on this one too!
I did not know this - that's very interesting!

Great video Sam my dad has a pannier in this livery in n gauge
Thanks David - ooh that sounds very special, I bet she looks lovely! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I want to see it!
Hi Sam. Despite the lack of detail and quality (quite appropriate for her era), she is a delightful little loco. I would have liked a closer look at the GWR green loco, just for comparison.
I agree Paul - I've always really enjoyed this! I might have done the GWR green version at some point too!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Not sure if I'm reading this wrong, or I simply don't understand.
But in your rankings, the pannier seems to have the highest actual score, yet is only scoring 3rd.
Probably my own mistake but thought I would queiry it
Love the videos, keep up the incredible work :)
Hi William - yes you're right, I made a bit of a typo on the score - sorry about that!!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Good afternoon, Sam! I have heard of a GWR prairie tank in London Transport livery that runs on a heritage line somewhere. I believe its number is L150.
Hi mate, ooh that sounds lovely - it does ring a bell - I'll look her up, thanks a lot!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Shes a beauty! Love the red, was almost abiut to get one until I realised they were so rare!
Thanks very much! They actually don't seem to be all that rare - they do pop up on Ebay a fair bit! :D
Thanks for watching,Sam :)
Sam you should do new vs old like 390 Pendolino vs mallard
Oooh I like that idea - thanks a lot for that one! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
No problem mate
Great review. I love the London Transport engine and looks like one of Duck's brother.
Thanks a lot mate! I guess it would be Duck's brother actually!! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Awesome video Sam! I swear, I have no idea how u can get use to that electronic like sound these old engines make. They always scare me like that. I know u take care of them really well, but still. The sound is just really scary. Lol xD
Thanks a lot mate! haha yeah the sound is a little scary on camera - but in person it has quite a charm to it! :D

Thanks so much - glad you liked this one for a change! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
that really stands out great review sam im a great fan and keep up the good work
Thanks James, yeah the livery definitely stands out on this one!! :D
All the best mate,

Hey Sam, I was wondering if you could tell me the title of the intro song; I would just like to listen to it while studying for finals😅
Hey Robert - I think that one was called Snack time! :D
Good luck with your finals mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
10:33 everyone (cow on back)
haha well spotted! :D
Actually someone (previous owner?) upgraded the paint work on that one, do to i never saw another one of these with any gold/brass painted details, but it looks good with it. And yes the Bachmann's version is much darker maroon,( I hope I can get one of those once).
Yes you're right Tom - someone pointed that out to me - they did a great job actually! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Because of this video, i ordered one from eBay. Thanks for the video
Ooh very nice Ben, hope you enjoy it! :D

Ahh okay mate - blimey, she must have done a lot of running to wear through the pickups! ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
That's a very nice loco, looks like it might have the same chassis as my Jinty. :)
Thanks mate! Yes indeed, lots of the tri-ang 0-6-0s had the same (or slightly modified) chassis - they were very economical back then!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
What's a layout without a pannier tank? The pannier is one of my favorite locos! Great video! Cheers!
haha absolutely - you've just got to have one! ;D
Glad you liked her mate,
Sam :)

Do you think that you could do a race on your layout with Mallard, Daylight and the Flying Scotsman?
OOh that sounds fun - maybe I could to that!! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Great video! I prefer modern image but that loco is smart and looks good.
Thanks a lot mate! Yeah me too actually - but I have a big appreciation for these vintage locos! :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Hello there Sam great to see the pannier tank on the layout um can have a great Western running session and have the pannier tank in that running session please?
Hello!! Glad you liked the pannier - that'd be a good thing to do I think! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
YAY! you did her great review sam
Yes!! Thanks a lot mate - really glad you enjoyed it! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video Sam 😁😁
Thanks very much mate! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Yay! Another review!!
Thank you! Hope you enjoy it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Lovely Pannier Tank L90.
Thanks a lot mate! :D
Nice video! A nice model with some brilliant locomotives. Could you do a GWR running session? Thanks! 😊
Thanks a lot mate - glad you enjoyed those! :D
Yeah sure - I've already done a few gwr sessions, but I'd be glad to do another some time! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks, that would be great! 😊
Could we have a Pannier tank running session? Just to show all the different liveries they had.
Yeah that'd be great - I'll see how many I can get my hands on! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
The only GWR tank (s) I havent seen on your layout are the 15xx class and 94xx class
That's true actually - I don't have those yet, but I will keep an eye out for them! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Oh yes the Pannier Tank my (actal) favourite loco, In a nice colour but I do prefer the GWR one.
Ooh fantastic - great choice of favourite, they are lovely! :D
That's fair enough - the GWR is definitely the more original livery,
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Well I love tank engines so much that’s why I have subscribed to sam’s trains YOU SHOULD TO IF YOU’RE NOT it’s a great channel I love it
Thanks a lot mate, I really appreciate you subscribing - thanks for the support! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
love these engines there so sweet and easy to run plus there cheap ish too,
Thanks a lot mate, me too - you can't beat these vintage runners :3
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
You mentioned that you didn't have any other London Transport trains, but were there any others produced? They seem like they'd make a neat set.
Thanks mate! I don't know whether Hornby did any others, but Bachmann have certainly done a few in their time!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I've got one of these and I love it too!
Ahh awesome! Yes they really are great! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
One question are model trains expensive(hornby and bachmann)
Hi mate, yes in my opinion they are pretty expensive for what they are unfortunately :/
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains probably worth it
Very gorgeous Pannier Tank. ^^
Thanks very much Vulcan! :D
And by the way how many pannier tank engine models do you have ?
hey sam, have you ever done a review on the hornby class 466?
Hi mate, I don't think I have ever done that one - I'll keep an eye out for one though! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam. I know it's 00:25 am but what do you think about the rolls Royce 103ex, I personally like it but some people don't.
I don't know too much about it really mate - sorry about that :(
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Happy St. Machan’s Day and good video!
Same to you too mate!! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Just in case you didn’t know St. Machan is the patron saint of Sodor and like St. George he has a day and that day is the 30th of April every year
A very beautiful 😍 locomotive and a very beautiful video.
Thank you so much! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I might buy one of these
do a review off the Bachmann panier Tank
I'd love to do the LT one - though I showed their Pannier in the Railway Children review! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
HI sam just been surfing ebay and there is a BRAND NEW class 37 in colas rail livery for the current bid £34 and a bachmann 57 freightliner £47 both with no current bids
all the best alfie
Ooh very nice mate - sounds like a bargain - good luck if you decide to bid on them! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
indeed i shall keep an eye out also there are a couple of hornby j15 and a adams radial tank
Sam, do you have any information regarding a different version of the Hornby red pannier tank? I've just bought one; its the open ended cab style, I don't recognise the logo on it. The only thing I have found out is that it's catalogue number R073, released only in 1993 and it's extremely rare....
Hmmm very interesting! I don't have any more info on that one unfortunately - did you look it up on Hornbyguide?
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I did, that's where I got the info! I will let you know what its like when it arrives 😁
There’s more versions of panniers like the 6400s and 7400s. I just watched Chris eden green’s locos in profile.
Yes you're right - there's all kinds of different Pannier! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I love the red on it
Me too! It's great isn't it?? :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam have you ever heard of the Bavarian S-2 I think if so is there a hornby and bachmanm engine of it?
Never heard of that one mate - it does sound awesome though, I'll look it up! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
can you review the john bull bachmann
?
I'd love to - if I ever get my hands on one, then I absolutely will! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
If that's the case Sam. What are the other London transport engines?
There were quite a lot - I remember seeing a Class 20, Metropolitan E class, L50 to name just a few!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I can’t choose which livery both are good looking
Ooh I know - it is hard to choose! ;D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
dear sam this was released in 1978 ( i know this because it is in my 1978 hornby catalog).
Ahh fantastic - thanks for that info! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
