  • Situated within the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury, an hour's drive north of Christchurch, is the 12.8km long Weka Pass Railway - the home of steam locomotive A 428. Here are some video highlights of the pacific, working hard over a number of running days on the railway during the winter & spring of 2022. A 428 has been a popular attraction of the railway since being restored in 1993, almost 30 years ago and the time for a major overhaul is soon approaching at the end of July 2023. This will require time, major expenses & various resources to enable the engine to steam once again, roaming the rails of the ex-Waiau branch line. For now, enjoy some of the final moments of A 428 working hard on its home rails!

Some great shots in here. Love the wheelslip too. I must see 428 soon before she's overhauled

Amazing shots mate. I was hauled by A 428 on my friends birthday party. Its a bit sad that shes getting overhauled but oh well. Next time it runs I will chase it from Glenmark to Waikarri.

Nice railway, sadly there was no train running when I was in the region during my NZ holiday in 2011.
428 might be the oldest Pacific type locomotive in service at the moment, until L&N 152 is restored back into operational condition.

Nicely filmed! Looks like you had that rare combination of sunshine and cool air temperature to perfectly capture this steam engine in action.

I saw me riding the train. 😂 It was a good day with that damp rail giving some good wheel slip. And then the guard forgetting to release the brake at Waikari made the engine slip that little bit more as it tried to leave. Nice video as always. 👍

Lovely video! Why the tender first running - was there a turntable problem somewhere?

There is no turntable at Waikare, end of the line. So they have to return in reverse. The Line which went all the way to Hawarden was closed in the mid to late 70s. When I moved to North Canterbury in 78 the line was already closed off from Waikare.

@@thecelticprince4949 When I was last there around 2011 there was a turntable at Waikari. It had only recently been installed and I filmed A428 being turned on it. Is it still there or has it been removed?

There is a turntable both ends however the Glenmark one needs work done before it can be used again.
