    Use to fly in to Katama airfield in the 80&90’s….best time of my life. We were friends with Mel and Roy who owned the diner on the strip. Brings back so many wonderful memories! Thank you! ❤

    I just took a 30-35 minute flight on the red biplane there two weeks ago. Nothing like an open cockpit flight! Our pilot Mike was great at pointing out all the sights, pivoting with a sharply dipped wing to look for sharks and such. He even indulged my sister and I with an inside (positive pitch) loop offshore just prior to landing! Definitely a day to remember!

    Matt, after watching your video, my buddy an I flew a Mooney M20 Ranger to Katama yesterday, Saturday 6.9.18 from Caldwell N.J. (KCDW Essex County). It was a 1 1/2 flight to Katama with a ground speed of about 150Kts.
    If it wasn't for your video I never would have known about this little gem of an airpark. The people at Katama were awesome and they all know you. We didn't have to wait too long to get a seat outside on the deck for breakfast. I think by mentioning your video we got the red carpet treatment. The food was awesome. I never had eggs Benedict with lobster over polenta with salad and blueberry pancakes as a side in my life. The food was better than a 5-star restaurant.
    We landed on RW 3 which was 3,700 ft. The grass was short and the runway was soft and dry. It's nice to know you can park your plane near the beach and spend a day on the ocean if you wish. I can't wait to go back. Thanks for this video.

      My second trip to Katama. After watching this video soon after publication we flew a Mooney M20C with 4 people into Katama. I figured if a Bonanza could survive this field, a Mooney surly could. Haha. We flew from CDW N.J. on a beautiful weekend and landed to the north on the same runway as Matt in this video. The people there knew Matt and had nice things to say about him. The restaurant was crowded and there was an hour wait, but since we flew in, we only had to wait a short time. We sat on picnic tables outside and the view was perfect.
      There is a parking spot for airplanes on the southern part of the airport and a short walk to the free beach. What else can you ask for? It's a perfect place to bring friends.
      I was told to call in advance if flying to get a preference, which is given to pilots. The food was awesome. The blueberry pancakes were the best I ever had. I also had the Eggs Benedict over polenta with lobster pieces. I never knew there was such a thing. It was perfect. This was the second time I had their excellent food.
      With four people in a tight Mooney, I decided not to top off the tanks, even though the book said the runway was long enough. I like to add 20% to all my numbers when I'm flying full, especially at a strange field with a grass strip. After takeoff, I leveled off low in ground effect to gain airspeed. Then it was gear up and westbound into the wild blue yonder. What a wonderful trip.
      I never heard of Katama until I saw this video. I've been there twice since and I hope to go there again soon. Blue skies to all.

    We flew there from New Bedford in a gyrocopter. My brother has a RAF 2000 with a fully enclosed cabin and all the avionics of a small plane. It was only about a 35 mile trip from there. He can land in less than 200 feet fully loaded. Very cool. Hop over, get lunch, be home in time for supper.

    Really enjoyed the video. I liked the content and story of going to a place you wouldn't attempt in a car (being on an island is major...smile) in the same amount of time. I liked seeing the enroute map view on one of your displays. I liked the bit of slo mo here and there. I liked seeing the gear coming up and going down. I liked the B roll shots around the cabin and panel. I liked seeing the transition from overhead drone to forward look on takeoff from Katama. I liked seeing that you could park your airplane and go to the beach and the other details about the airpark, grass strip, and restaurant. One thing I would like to see more of is a few more shots of the speed and altitude displays during the trip. Just a B roll kind of thing. I know these videos take a lot of work and it IS appreciated.

      I'm going to have to play Devil's Advocate and say I'm not a big fan of the walking/eating slow motion. The rest of the video was cool, especially the panel shots. I flew into Katama once but the winds were too gusty for my taste so my girlfriend and I just went to Westerly to hang out with some friends. I was able to fly her around her favorite lighthouse so she could take some pictures. She was so thrilled!

    Went to land on the grass runway at New Holstein, WI (8D1) on the way to KOSH. About a dozen kids were cutting the grass with hand mowers? I commented that the manager was being hard on summer students considering the abundance of tractors in WI. On arrival we found out they were testing engines for Tecumseh motors. Grass is great, don't be shy. Follow the co-pilot's advice at the video start. If a Pilatus PC12-NG can do grass, the rest of us can with smaller aircraft. What's next matt, a beach? You did well with the ice runway which is a favorite of mine as well.

    Excellent videos. You have such passion for general aviation. You have touched on the disappearing GA airports, and how sad it is. An excellent example of why they are important came to light in Sonoma County, California, where we are in the midst of the biggest wildfire in CA history. 5000+ homes destroyed, 120,000+ acres burned, 40 dead. There were many air tankers assigned to the fires, based at medium and large airports nearby, but what really stood out was the helicopter air attack base set up in just a couple of days at a small airport in Petaluma, CA. Numerous heavy lift helicopters along with fuel and fire retardant tanker trucks were staged there for quick turn-around fire suppression. They even had a temporary control "tower" set up. That airport was 15 minutes flight time closer to the fire than any others in the area. It is highly likely that 15 minutes made a difference, sparing life and property. Those pilots and the firefighters are rock stars here. (search Nuns fire, that will lead to relevant info). Keep up the excellent work and thank you for sharing your passion.

    The airfield I am training on (EDHE) was actually closed for almost 2 weeks this month due to substatial rain softening the ground too much.
    My flight instructor told me on monday, they had a C182 with wheel fairings (fully loaded, fully tanked) trying to take off but dirt built up in the fairings to a degree that the wheels blocked and take off was no longer possible. They then unloaded the plane, took off the fairings so that take off was possible. My instructor then drove the pilots stuff and the fairings to the nearest paved airport (EDDH) from where the poor guy could finally get on his way... :D

      Under Part 107 (i.e. if you're a certificated commercial drone operator and operating under those regs), as long as you're outside controlled airspace (otherwise you would need authorization from ATC), you just have to give way to and not interfere with manned aircraft operations while not being reckless/dangerous. In this example, we've got two commercially and highly experienced certificated fixed-wing pilots, who are also commercially certificated and highly experienced drone operators, executing thoroughly briefed flights while looking for traffic and communicating on CTAF at a quiet airport when no one else was flying :)

    Hey Matt, loved the video! I had to ask this question. Forgive me for being a little naive, but I had to ask this question (I was super curious.) From around 8:39 to around 9:35 in the video, there are areal shots of your airplane on the runway and you walking with your friend on Martha's Vineyard. If I was right in assuming that only two of you went on that flight, I was wondering how you did it?

    Sweet spot to fly into. Never been a fan of flying a plane with retractable-gear on a grass strip though. It's always iffy whether your insurance would cover damage. But that's just me. Again cool video Matt.

    • @mattguthmiller
      @mattguthmiller  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      These planes were made for grass. When they were designed, most airports in the U.S. weren't paved!

    • @bcc_2277
      @bcc_2277 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Guthmiller listen I'm meant know ill feelings about your choice to land on a grass strip. I'm aware that most airfields weren't paved back in the day. I've been flying since I was a young lad going back to the 60's and I'm a ex Navy airframes mechanic also. I've seen plenty of gear damage over the years from grass strip landings. Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers!

    • @mattguthmiller
      @mattguthmiller  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No ruffled feathers, just pointing it out :) I'll grant you that it's much easier to damage an airplane landing on grass than on a paved surface, but done right I don't think it's a problem, definitely some paved strips out there that are even worse! Insurance will pay no matter where you land.

    • @bcc_2277
      @bcc_2277 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Kosmoski The point is why take the numerous chances to do damage to your landing gear or airframe. Let's not turn this into a I have no idea what I'm talking about. Grass strips are mainly used for tail daggers always have been. Stroll through your AOPA and read what their advisement is. Listen if someone is willing to fly into a grass strip with retractable gear that's totally up to the individual pilot. What I said was I'm not comfortable with doing it myself. Peace....

    • @mkosmo
      @mkosmo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What chances for damage? These gears are sturdy. In fact, I'd argue you take a greater risk on pavement. Sideload is significantly worse on pavement than grass, and harder on your brakes, too. Remember, the Bo is used as the backcountry workhorse in Australia.
      Just because safety-culture has gotten a bit overbearing here doesn't mean that the airplane is unsafe to operate like this. Would I do it in a new-to-me airplane? No, probably not for the first few. Digging a nosewheel would be bad and is the greatest risk given the potential financial complications. Would I do it in my airplane? Yes, in a heartbeat, without a doubt. From watching Matt, it's pretty clear that he's about as comfortable in that airplane as you can be. That's a good thing. Once you "click" with an airplane and know every bit of what it can do, it's a bit different than most weekend renters. If something feels off, you know it before it becomes a problem.

    Love your videos and adventures! One thing I've always wondered is if in a plane built to cruise at 160 kts or more, could you cruise at 120 kts for a few hours? Does the engine care that it'd be running under the green arc? Just seems like some trips would be fine at slower speeds and better efficiency but maybe that's not ok.

    Hey,
    It seems like you never lean your engine.. ? Your enginemonitor shows a fuel burn of 21 gph at 65% power. Is your fuel flow meter not calibrated or do you usually fly at full rich mixture? Other than that I love your videos und your aircraft, especially that avionic suite!
    Greetings from Germany :)

    New subscriber. Any tips on "hot starts" in your Bonanza?

      Throttle and mixture full forward, boost pump on for about a second, crank, and pull the throttle back as soon as it fires. Really high density altitudes (probably 6,000+ ft) can make it a little trickier, but some variation of using a leaner mixture works.

      If a hot engine has been sitting for around 15 minutes, its probable you have a vapor lock! To rid that, throttle full, mixture lean, pump on high for 15 seconds. After which, prime and normal start. Enjoy.

    Hey Matt! Love your videos! Being an aspiring pilot myself, it`s a thrill following your adventures. On a constructive note, may I suggest you getting a DJI Osmo (mobile edition perhaps) etc. to increase production value by removing shakiness in the videos.
    Anyways keep it up!
    Tons of respect, Ken.

      To the beach, so that tide carries them away.
