  • Many concussion patients are told that there’s nothing that can be done for them or that their condition and symptoms are permanent and/or their “New Normal”. In this episode we discuss why people may be told that, and whether or not there is any truth to it.

    It’s hard to become the person I want to be right now but if I do eventually recover, I am a reinvented person with a different perspective who will be there for my friends and family as much as I can be. Talk about a long sentence.

    What finally worked was cardio everyday, eliminating gluten, and working on my neck by a Physio. My neuro-optamologist spoke out against vision therapy, so I bailed on it. Still have some sensitivity to indoor lighting.

    Hi My OT recommended I watch your episodes, I am glad to have found you, I don't wish for anyone to go through this but it is nice not to be alone. I am approaching a year now with my concussion. I am in Physio, OT, counseling and Vision therapy. At this point they say my vestibular center is where most damage happened and some minimal frontal lobe potentially, they did not see anything on scan but this is based on my remaining symptoms, mostly my eyes, there are 4 things wrong with my eyes and I now need special glasses as the next step. constant headaches, eye pain, tinnitis and jaw pain. A paint can fell on my head! I'm at the point now, I have very slowly improved a lot but I strongly worry it is going to have some permanence.

    I went to a neurologist after I had a fall on my back and head in the yard in late March. Within a few weeks I had eye problems, dizziness and balance problems. I also have underlying Chronic Lyme disease and mast cell activation. My neurologist diagnosed nystagmus and saw symptoms of the concussion in my brain. I'm in "neuro" therapy to correct the nystagmus. I also get acupuncture and am about to see a functional medical doctor. After 4 months I'm still dealing with symptoms though I intuitively feel I need some other ways of dealing with this in addition to the therapy. I'm considering going to a osteopathic doctor. What are your thoughts on this?

    If brain fog is an issue, try this. I’ve tried so many things since getting my concussion a year and a half ago. The only thing that has a noticeable impact on reducing my brain fog is keto. Maybe it’s a food intolerance that was exacerbated by the injury but it’s something to try.

    First of all, this video is so helpful and is very positive in terms of outlook (encouraging activity/positivity rather than locking someone up and bed bounding them) I have a question however.
    If your symptoms have passed a couple months, therefore it would be logical to think that the physiological problem (I.e injury to the brain) is now over, is it okay to drink alcohol?
    I know in a previous video you said that alcohol causes alcohol brain inflammation, but if the PCS is due to brain injury you HAD and not a brain injury you now have, is there any risk associated to drinking regarding reverting any “progress” that you made over the past couple months. I just wanna know if I have a beer (or 5) on a weekend at I gonna be causing myself to go through this for the next year 😅 been dodging alcohol for the past couple weeks because of this.
    Apologies if that’s confusing, I have always been bad at typing out questions, nothing to do with PCS I’m just horrendous 😂
    Keep up the good work! 👍🏼

    • @CompleteConcussions
      @CompleteConcussions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a great question! There's some nuance here. If you are having persistent concussion symptoms, I am releasing a video shortly (make sure you subscribe to the channel so you see it (notifications on)), that will explain what causes persistent symptoms in more detail. One of the things that causes persistent symptoms is chronic neuro-inflammation. So although the injury to the brain (neurometabolic cascade) recovers in a month or so, inflammation can linger - especially if you have gut issues, food sensitivities, sleep dysregulation, etc. Alcohol damages the gut and is pro-inflammatory (i.e., increases inflammation) - so, if inflammation is one of the drivers of your symptoms, then alcohol will set you back (even small amounts), increase your symptoms and delay recovery even further. If inflammation is NOT an issue for you, then you may be able to tolerate a few drinks here and there. So it just depends on what is driving YOUR symptoms. This is different for everyone and it's usually a combination of a few factors.

      @@CompleteConcussions thank you for the speedy reply! I’ve got notifications on and have already began binge watching your podcast on Spotify during my walks 👍🏼 This may sound silly, but say if you intake alcohol, and you feel fine on the night, would that indicate that it is A-OK? Or would it be the after effects that you would look in to? I know I’m asking a lot here. I just don’t want to give up my social life for the next 9 months (or however long it might take) 😅

    I've had chronic stress headaches for a few years now that I developed after divorce...and became exacerbated with an injury in BJJ. It was definitley connected to my shoulder...and I was seeing both a chiropractor and a massage therapist pre-pandemic. But the symptoms never really fully went away. Even a GP couldn't really figure out what was going on. Now those same symptoms might be causing pro-longed concussion symptoms? Month three...I've improved alot. My thinking is pretty much back to normal. I still can't do hardly anything without getting light-headed though which is incredibly frustrating. I was highly active before my concussion.

    If your symptoms last over two weeks you could have a neck misalignment that is partially blocking the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and causing damage to your central nervous system. You may want to check out an upper cervical chiropractor and get that straightened out it really is helping me with post concussion syndrome.

    • @CompleteConcussions
      @CompleteConcussions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no evidence at all that neck misalignment does anything to cerebrospinal fluid and there is also no evidence that neck misalignment causes damage to the central nervous system. Neck "misalignment" (which is a misnomer because the neck isn't "misaligned" - it's more neck dysfunction) causes similar symptoms to a concussion - this is why correcting it can help symptoms improve. So you are correct that neck work can be helpful in some patients (the ones who have underlying neck dysfunction driving their symptoms) but the current evidence does not suggest that it's due to those reasons. Glad it's helping you!

      @@CompleteConcussions Hi Cameron thanks for getting back to me. I have to respectfully disagree with no evidence my chiropractor Kevin Leach has a channel Progressive Chiropractic and he does shows with Tyler Evans discussing a wide range of research papers about upper cervical and it's effect on CSF. I recall them mentioning once about working with you in the past and I assume you had a bit of a falling out unfortunately. Anyway maybe check out Scott Rosa he has done a lot of work in this area or watch "Jim McMahon receives cervical adjustments" about the famous football player and his positive experience with atlas orthogonal. They show MRI images of his neck and you can see what appears to be blockage of the fluid but I am not claiming to be an expert. Also I've watched hundreds of positive testimonials about it for all kinds of issues. I'm sorry to keep messaging people in your channel about this but I really believe it should be one of the treatments to try for concussion and you have a pretty big platform. I just wish someone had mentioned it to me earlier and hopefully you can do so it in the future. Take care, Wes.

      @@wesporter2176 I don't recognize the names. You can disagree all you want but the scientific evidence doesn't support this claim. I am a chiropractor and I agree 100% that treatment of the neck can help relieve symptoms...there is just no evidence that it is relieving CSF flow/pressure.

      @@wesporter2176 that's not research. That's what we call "n of 1". That is anecdotal at best because you can theoretically handpick the cases that prove your point and ignore the ones that don't. You show the "good cases" to patients to help sell your treatments/programs. Research requires sequential cases and blinding to avoid bias, specific measurement techniques to quantify change, and peer-review. And then, once you have one study, it needs to be replicated a number of times before we can say "yes, this is legit".

    I had a concussion Nov 2016. I’ve been lightheaded ever since. 4.5 years. My primary care physician, has no clue. No cure for concussion. Ear Dr, Ear Clininc, a Neurologist, UPMC, countless xrays, about 4 MRIs. Several Concussion Chiropractors, all want to charge large amounts of money. But all say, there is no cure for a concussion. Even the exercises where you stand on your head or hold your head upside down to move the crystals around in your inner ear. Tried most things I could find. I can’t even go to my gym, because I get lightheaded. Haven’t found a Dr or med center with any answers yet. I have given up on the medical field. Being 68, I am now considered old and complaining. Now I only get the medical staff not even the Dr that I make an appt with. Meanwhile, I am still lightheaded and hoping for an answer.

      Hi Tim. Unfortunately there is a lot of crap and misinformation out there. Lightheadedness is generally a sign of autonomic nervous system dysregulation (blood flow issues) - has anyone done any type of exercise/treadmill testing on you? The treatment for what you are experiencing consists of doing things (diet, sleep, breathing, etc.) to regulate your autonomic nervous system as well as incorporating subsymptom threshold exercise testing. We have an online program that has been quite helpful for patients like you who can't seem to find answers. Check out concussiondoc.io if you're interested. All the best!
