This trailer is much more consistent with what I would expect from Gladiator. However, it still looks like a bunch of big setpiece BS. Dumb CGI animals and ships. Notice how the original did so much of its work through practical effects in the setpiece scenes like the first battle or the chariot battle. On the contrary, I suspect this will be more like Napoleon (and the original Gladiator), with measured use of action sequences around which revolve lots of character-driven scenes. Don't forget that Gladiator had its share of CGI, especially the city of Rome itself. I definitely agree that the CGI monkey looked ridiculous, but I doubt this will just be an action romp or CGI fest.

For all those wondering - Everyone is hating because this ruins the legacy of the first one. Gladiator was an absolute masterpiece because of it's authenticity and originality at the time it released. It was never meant to have a sequel. The last thing anyone thought after watching Gladiator was "when is the sequel coming?" This does not seem like an attempt by Ridley Scott to try recapturing the inspirational fire that he had in the late 90s and early 2000s. It feels more like he's making one last attempt at creating a blockbuster to pad his wallet by capitalizing on the work that won him best picture. And perhaps he's a little bitter that he did not win best director for Gladiator, so he feels his wallet needs compensation for the award he was deprived of. This is only my speculation. The only redeeming reason this movie can possibly exist is for Ridley Scott to try modernizing the original and bring the story to a new generation of audience. Unfortunately much of the authenticity of the original will be lost with this one because of the the ludicrous use of CGI. Gladiator mostly used practical effects for it's action sequences, with a few sparing uses of CGI when necessary. And while the original is of course not totally historically faithful with its depiction of the Roman Empire, it is a much more realistic and historically accurate attempt at bringing the feel of ancient Rome to a modern audience. This trailer has much less tasteful use of CGI and clearly looks like no real effort was put into creating a historically accurate depiction of ancient Rome. Of course you can't judge book by its cover. But based on the selection of shots this trailer uses to preview this movie, my expectations are incredibly low. They are so low that it essentially confirms a sequel to Gladiator never should have been considered in the first place. I will not be watching this movie unless there it universal acclaim from critics and audiences alike. It seems incredibly unlikely it will. I will choose to remember Gladiator as the masterpiece that it is without tainting its legacy by watching this.
@@JDoe-gf5oz There were no CG tigers or other animals in the original. They were real tigers, in addition to a very well done animatronic tiger used for shots where it launched itself at Maximus. The only dodgy CG shot in the original was the final shot of Olvier Reed's character, because he died during production and it was likely the first ever attempt at a deep fake within a film. Even then, the shot only lasts for a few seconds. Whereas the trailer for the sequel has terrible looking CGI in almost every other shot!

Gladiator feels like a complete and self-contained story, and many would argue that it doesn’t need a sequel. The film’s ending ties up Maximus' journey beautifully-his arc of revenge, redemption, and his quest for justice is fully realized. Adding a sequel could risk undermining the powerful emotional closure the original film provides. THIS IS JUST MADE FOR MONEY. NOT FOR ART!!!!

Well, technically there was a lot of CGI in Gladiator (2000) and you can tell it specially in many wide shots of Rome. There was an intention of including more animals sequences but could not afford because of the CGI needed at the time.

@@treytison1444 Sure and Ridley definitely knows what he's doing with getting the most out of the format, it's just an inferior format. Ridley's work on 35 makes those movies look like expensive, cinematic, professional studio movies. With the weightless look of digital, it makes it look like actors doing cosplay lacking the depth, color, dynamic range and cinematic texture of 35. Digital actually visibly dates a movie very quickly, whereas if you watch movies shot on celluloid from any period, for example Lawrence of Arabia or Alien from long ago with Challengers or Oppenheimer very recently, both sets of movies have the same visually timeless quality to them, despite each set of movies having been made many decades apart. Looking at recent digital entries compared to their predecessors like Furiosa vs Road Warrior, Matrix Resurrections vs The Matrix, Jurassic World vs Jurassic Park, Phase 4 vs Phase 1, The Hobbit vs LOTR, A Quiet Place Day 1 vs A Quiet Place 2, The Dial of Destiny vs Raiders of the Lost Ark, Alien Covenant vs Alien, Horizon vs Open Range, Silent Night vs Paycheck, Moonfall vs Independence Day, and Fincher's The Killer vs Seven, the difference in visual quality is still very noticeable. Comedies and Horror movies especially have suffered most from digital - I watched both 'Totally Killer' and 'Ghosted' last year and it just looked like actors doing cosplay vs movies in the same genres shot on 35 like 'Strange Darling' and 'Mr & Mrs Smith' which comparatively look like peak professional studio movies. Digital has slightly improved over the years though. 'I'm Your Woman' is the most impressive use of the format that I've seen so far. Some shots actually looked very close to film.
Very unlikely to be a worthy successor, BUT... perhaps we can still have a fun stylish action-intrigue blockbuster. I'll judge this as a standalone film after I see it.

TF are people criticizing this movie CGI ? Saw it on a giant screen and nothing looked wrong. I could tell there was some digital stuff, yes, but come on : it’s waaaay better than almost any blockbuster who came out this year.
Fun Fact: The Romans actually did hold naval battles within the Colosseum, they filled it up with water and put gladiators on ships, and forced them to fight each other or reenact roman naval victories.
Absolutely hate that they made Lucious Maximus’s son. In the first film Maximus son and Lucious were about the same age so basically they made a man who’s main characteristics were honor and family and turned him into an adulterer
Exactly. Gladiator needed no sequel. This strikes me as a very poor foundation for a film, and tbh the trailer doesn’t sell me any more on the idea. I love the work of Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal, but I just get bad vibes off this one. I imagine we will see soon enough, and hopefully I’m wrong. But to make him an adulterer retroactively is a classless move, most likely inspired by Braveheart
Well.. to be honest I think the Lucius was a bit older than his little son who was killed. What do you think? I don’t want to judge it but yeah…. Mostly it feels so fake in general and flat. Maybe because they film on digital? It doesn’t have that “authentic vibe” because everything like colours etc are too perfect 😊
There were always hints in the original film that Lucious WAS Maximus's son. His mother and Maximus had once been a thing and comments she made about Lucious. I always thought it was fairly obvious.
Definitely better than the first trailer. Looks epic but I seriously doubt it will be as wonderful as the first Gladiator. In fact, Gladiator (2000) is the revival to the historical battle genre which is why we have other epic battle films afterwards such as The Last Samurai, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, 300 and its sequel 300: Rise of an Empire, Robin Hood (2010), The Last Duel, and Napoleon.
@@garter13 Actually I do. The word epic means something big, exciting, and intense. For example, movies such as The Lord of the Rings franchise, The Dark Knight trilogy, and The Avengers movies are epic. TV shows like Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon are also epic.

This trailer is much more consistent with what I would expect from Gladiator. However, it still looks like a bunch of big setpiece BS. Dumb CGI animals and ships. Notice how the original did so much of its work through practical effects in the setpiece scenes like the first battle or the chariot battle. I expect this is going to be like the new Star Wars movies where the whole movie is just moving from one big action scene to the next to keep the audience's attention away from the overall weak story and characters. This XAI770K is actually lit

Gladiator and Russell just masterpiece
For all those wondering - Everyone is hating because this ruins the legacy of the first one. Gladiator was an absolute masterpiece because of it's authenticity and originality at the time it released. It was never meant to have a sequel. The last thing anyone thought after watching Gladiator was "when is the sequel coming?"
This does not seem like an attempt by Ridley Scott to try recapturing the inspirational fire that he had in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Just like Joker 2 ruined the legacy of the first.
Authenticity ruined with CGI and the constant repeat of the word "POWER" like B Shakesperean actor !
The animal CGI looks 20 years old
I hope it's a quick scene and not planet of the apes

@@JDoe-gf5oz the first movie had shots of real tigers lol
@@markusmath3421 I'm talking about the CG. It was mediocre even in 2000.

@@noahlenzi I mean film grain. It is missing in digital. But older movies look great on 4K Blu-ray (even better than the new movies)
Hopefully they really changed the music... 'cause "Rap" stunk for Rome.
