Singapore paid billions of US dollars to purchase the arms, logistics and training. It was not given free as charity aids. Of course, the opportunities for interaction and learning is a big boon to upgrade the Singapore Armed Forces capabilities and professionalism. Some misinformation there. Singapore is not a treaty ally of the US and unlikely to ever be, as we adopt a neutral stance and will never allow ourselves to be dragged into a conflict that isn’t ours.

US and Singapore does not have a military alliance. There is NO defence treaty, If Singapore is attacked, the US is under NO OBLIGATIONS (under the non-existent defence treaty) to come to Singapore's aid militarily or otherwise. What we have with the US is a defence cooperation agreement allowing the US to dock and resupply. We also have agreement for our military (especially our air force) to train in the US air bases and training grounds.

    From a realist perspective,
it boils down to a convergence of national interests between the USA and Singapore.
For much of the post-WWII era,
the USA, as a regional security guarantor
    has provided an international order
in which parts of East Asia,
    including Singapore,
could grow and develop using export-oriented industrialization.
    Over the postwar decades,
ties have been based on a deep reservoir of mutual strategic trust and goodwill
built up between leaders of the USA and Singapore.
The inter-operability of Singapore's defense systems with that of the USA
attest to that level of trust and confidence.
It is thus no miracle that US-Singapore defence ties reached this level today,
but rather in no small part to human effort.
