    Maybe compost from different plants adds effects to the compost so you can mix certain plant combos to make the optimal compost.

    I have some suggestions :
    For the compost color probleme you can make multiple particule of each different fertilizer instead of combining them all,
    I played a minecraft mod a long time ago and there was this mechanic where each soil have diferent nutriment in it and that each plant consume different nutriment so if i wanted my plant to grow i needed to choose wich plant goes in to that soil and make some cycling to let the soil replenish by using another type of plant that consume an other type of nutriment ( Like in real life :) This brought farming to an incredible level of management and planification :)
    Keep up the good work !!!! I want to play this game so bad !

    I love it. What if you had the little color bits in the compost have 4 separate objects. When only one modifier is added all 4 bits have the same color, when 2 modifiers are added then half will be one color and half the other. likewise 3 and 4. The default color might be the same default compost color.

    You could create an upgrade system for the compost bin that adds one container at a time to the side of the compost bin as it upgrades like a progression system. I think the disconnected containers is a little weird of a concept just because it doesn’t easily translate to real life. But adding an upgrade system for the compost bin I think would make it all a bit more intuitive.
    Just some thoughts! Keep up the great work!

    Hey! I just met you with the 10 years of game dev, and I'm loving your videos! I'm trying to start game development myself, but it is still not the time for me... But I love the process of game development, and I'll get to it someday!
    I have an idea, for the compost coloring issue. Just add a few more compost particles for each color, making it easier to remember what fertilizer are there, instead of remembering every color combination. For example, if you add a green and a blue fertilizer , there will be green and blue particles on the compost!
    It's a simple idea, but I think it would be helpful!
    Congrats on your success, and the achievements on the marathon!
    Jacob Collier is the best! I hope you enjoyed it!

    Congrats on the Marathon and on the stunning progress for Homegrown! I know the UI overhaul is coming, just adding this as an suggestion:
    I would highlight the compost values in green since +10% and -10% in different categories may still be desired buffs. This may also improve readability when adding possible negative effects in the future!
    Thank you for sharing the progress and taking us with you on Homegrowns development journey.

  • @FacemanArt
    @FacemanArt ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looking awesome as always, also congrats on the half marathon! I have 2 small suggestions for the graphics side of the compost:
    1. You could also make its so the "flakes" in the compost are a random-ish assortment of the different fertilizers. So at a glance you could see that the compost has green & yellow fertilizer by the flakes it has.
    2. My suggestion for the containers of fertilizer would be to look at maybe rain barrels for inspiration! (Side note: you could also eventually make the liquid bubble passively or when it is drained)
    Keep up the great work!

    • @oldshamen
      @oldshamen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that is a great idea. The use of random a random colour will make it hard to tell what is actually in the compost when a lot of additives are created. Better to put “specs” in the soil with colors of the additives used as you will more easily remember the colors of the additive-bottles.

    • @ThinMatrix
      @ThinMatrix  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the feedback! My worry with showing all the colors in the compost was that it might just look a bit too crazy and unnatural having multicolored soil everywhere. I was already a bit unsure about the single colored compost looking a bit too chemical-y, but I think with a bit if tweaking I can get it to look natural enough. But it would be that much harder with multicolored compost.
      As for the containers, I think a rain barrel shape could look nice, I'll have to try it!

    You could add a couple additional meshes to the compost heap that get colored according to what kind of fertilizer is mixed in for the different chunks you see in the compost pile. This could lead to a natural limiting factor of how many different fertilizers you can add to a compost heap as well. You could then use the scaling mesh you made for the fertilizer containers to scale the size of the compost based on how much is there.

  • @yassinsoftware

    Congrats on the half-marathon! And here's my take on the compost system:
    Though it may be harder to code, I think it would be simpler and a lot more intuitive to just have players 'pour' the compost boosters directly into the compost bins. Maybe have the effects of the boosters 'wear off' (decrease the percentage values) as more compost is taken from the bin? If this is the case then I'm not sure how the coloring would work. Maybe use an additive color system, where all boosters mixed would end up being white? Either that or do some coding magic to blend the 'randomized' colors, but I'm not sure.

  • @denovodavid

    The negative percents on the fertilizer tripped me up for a second, I thought they were debuffs.

    I love the idea of being able to mix your own compost, however, as you mentioned it currently looks a bit industrial / chemical.
    I'm not sure if you can take any of this for your game, but I remember when working with compost IRL at my grandmothers house, that a big compost heap is a permanent thing, which you don't fill up 100% and empty 100%. You gradually add more on top and when you need some, you dig some out from the bottom and sift it into a wheelbarrow.
    Only then we added other stuff to the wheelbarrow, like plain earth to make it less concentrated or hay to loosen things up and give it more long term fertility.

    I think the town should sell randomly generated compost bags that you can only buy one of each and change each day, so they’ll be easier to obtain but for a slightly higher cost and the downside of not being able to choose the nutrients. That way players are not forced to get started with making compost right away and can experiment with different nutrients and combinations before they start making their own.

    Hi, great video! Maybe with the compost, you could have the "soil" of the compost itself change color depending on the combination like you have it now, but perhaps the rocks could use the different given colors? So, if you have a compost heap getting pink and blue, half of the rocks would be blue and the other half pink, that sort of thing?

    Congrats on the half marathon :) I recently did the Edinburgh marathon and I think the difference with a half marathon is that it's more of a mental game (especially during the last 6 miles). I didn't feel aerobically exhausted but my joints were definitely shot by the end (perhaps a lack of training on my part). I would definitely invest in a camelbak or similar hydration solution. There were drink/gel stops on my route but for me personally I don't think they were frequent enough and it was quite a hot day when I ran it. It's worth getting used to running and eating or consuming gel pouches.

    • @ThinMatrix
      @ThinMatrix  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, and congrats for the Edinburgh marathon! Yeah, I think a camelbak would have been useful, it was so hot by the end and I really needed more water. Plus I found it impossible to run and drink from the cups at the same time, I think most of it got splashed over my face! For the last couple of water stations I gave up trying to run at the same time and just stopped to drink.

    For compos color you can just do nutrient chunks so small crystals with the color of the additive. Additional I'd like to see a more in depth system like potenbrewing in potenomics. And it would be nice if farmland itself has nutrients that deplete differently for each type of crop you plant on it. This would encourage crop rotation.

    An idea I thought of for the situation you mentioned where a player might not produce enough plant waste could be to add a crop like wild grass or something and have that have a very high drop rate of plant matter but not drop anything else, that way a play could have a patch of crops specifically intended to refuel the composers without the need to go buy some at the shop!

    Great to see you again for another video.. A suggestion from me can be the compost bin can also only support smaller nutrient containers with still 2 options, while the compost heap (bigger one) stays the same heehhe. Another is that every plant should have advantages and disadvantages to the composts to encourage variety of compost. Also is it possible to have a nutrient container be connected to two or more compost bin/compost heap, cause that somehow works with my brain.... HEHEHHEH Cant wait for the next one..

    What could be a great idea is to add the possibility to claim multiple land, pretty much like travelling between one "farm" and another. This could be very interesting for the players, adding an adventurous aspect to the game, discovering new parts of the world and specific plants & trees depending on their location and soil; the difficulty would vary depending on where in the world you are. This would increase both the interest and time put into the game.
    The world could be procedurally generated, and be split into multiple biomes with each of them having positive & negative traits. (e.g. Volcanic soil is highly fertile, certain types of plants could grow over there that wouldn't otherwise. And so on.)
    Take care!

    Your eyes will hurt you while working on the PC because the light is coming from same direction
    Just a suggestion to block the light while working to protect your eyes

    You can come up with a more efficient way to simulate the contents in the containers with Blender's shape keys, where you can change its amount with a slider that ranges from 0 to 1 whilst making the container a single mesh.

    For the compost fertilizer issue with colors, those tiny bumps you have on the heap, weight them so if there is one fertilizer, all are one color, if there are 2 fertilizes, half are color 1, half are color 2.
    that way, the user can very quickly know if he fertilized the compost or not, just by looking how many colors (and which ones) are on the compost heap.

    That jingle at 3:14 is associated to game dev content for me now, just like the vsauce sound is assciated to vsauce/science content :D
