From NW Washington State U.S. Carniolans are our favorite bees. Brought to us from Wa St. University germplasam program bring pure stock and breading the "New World Carniolan " for the Western U.S. beekeepers.
It's nice that at the end they mentioned that the Carniolan strain isn't only Slovenian. It's Austrian, Croatian, Bosnian.. the entire west Balkan region. But we really have to work on keeping it clean and genetically stable. There are always people who would love to sell us the hybrids like the unstable Buckfast hybrid who's good only in the first generation. Then we're going backwards and need all that protecting equipment.. not to mention all the other problems that make you from a queen breeder into a queen buyer. So please don't be naive and keep your carnies clean...

The carniolan bees here in the USA are very defensive, unlike the pur breed in slovenia.
