Hello from Ukraine🇺🇦 I've started learning recorder inspired by your channel. Thank you so much for this cool tutorial and for support of our fight for freedom 🔥
It is a great song but I'm even more blown away by what you can do with a soprano recorder. This is such an edutaining video that I've been watching on repeat these days.
Thank you so much! I wanted to know more about those woodwind instruments ever since I saw Kalush play them. I'm also really keen to try out the parts on recorder which is made ever so much easier with your video, as you've already worked out the notes. This was great - thanks again.
As a Ukrainian that has been watching your channel for many years now (admittedly with pauses, as my mood to learn the recorder fluctuates likewise) I am very happy to see your support. Thank you! In the national selection video of the song one could also see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trembita , I don't see it in this video, perhaps they dropped it or just left it as part of backtrack (it seems unfortunately on ESC all instrumental part has to be pre-recorded nowadays anyway). Trembita is also featured in Ruslana's 2004 Wild Dances at the beginning. Congratulations with the result the UK has shown. I got used to see them in top 5 ... if you flip the results upside down, so it was a very nice change indeed.
1. Your picture of a Telenka seems to have holes, where you see in the video that he only covers the "bell", so he doesn't have holes. 1b Fun fact that the overtone series of the open pipe (even harmonics) and of the stopped pipe (odd harmonics of an octave lower) interweave, so you can play a scale by closing and opening the bell which switches you between the two series. (Your recorder is conic, so you can't get that effect.) 1c That said, I've now spent 10 minutes trying to figure out the key of his Trelenka and I'm not getting it. You? 2. there is a double version of the Sopilka -- I've seen the name Djolomiga - that is so much fun. Instant "keukenmeidentertsen"! EDIT I should have stuck with it. His instrument is in G. Which means that his F is the natural 7 and thus a little flat. Btw, I figured this out on my Koncovka which is essentially the same instrument, but from Slovakia.
thanks for explaining. When i saw the broadcast of Eurovision I didn't believe he was actually playing the flute (Telenka) because you hear more than 2 notes en he just uses one hole. But now it seems more likely. I still find it hard to believe :) Strange how that works...
Another really interesting video, Sarah. I had noticed that overtone flute right away. Not many people have ever heard of or listened to it's music.A friend made one for me from PVC tube and added one more hole at the end, so I can raise the overtones by a semitone !
This is the tutorial you never knew that you needed on a Friday! It's likely he was miming on the night (Eurovision rules say instruments aren't allowed), but how anyone can create that music just from air pressure is incredible!
That's completely understandable to be miming on the night - playing AND singing and dancing and performing to perfection like that must be nigh impossible!
After the song first went out and I bought two Telenka, one in Bb and the other in D -- the overtone flute is one of the cooler flute I have in my collection.
Thank you so much for this, lots of fun and for a good cause. This would be a good opportunity to pull out a second recorder and throw in a D drone on the sung vocal parts!
Great video! As a small note, from a player from Romania (with similar instruments and playing methods as the Ukrainians, it seems). At around 1:28, where you said that they would play the soplinka "even voiced", in your short try you would do a voice "humming" that would follow the melody going higher and lower. I am not sure if the Ukrainians do it differently, but in our traditional way of doing a "buzzing hum" to accompany and make the flute louder, the hum must be constant in pitch, with the melody being played only by the flute, not through humming. Just a small nitpick but maybe it can help others :D
Thank you so much for this. There were parts of the song I was finding hard to translate into record notes the rif area. This makes it so much easier having it all put together in one video. Great to have a list of places to donate to the Ukrainian cause for different countries. Will share that with others. 💙💛Any chance you could put up sheet music for the song we could buy and download at some point?
I JUST SQUEALED SO LOUDDDDD!!!!!! I'm I can whistle this, probably kazoo it...next step - recorder? I hope it's mostly the high notes cause I'm a very rusty beginner and I could never get the low C to begin with....also thank you for explaining about the instruments used in the original, I have been wondering about those
Good evening, Sarah! For quite a few years I've been a huge fan of yours, even though it's my first comment in this channel. I'm not sure if I have a right to discuss this issue, but despite the fact that I'm Russian, I love Ukranian culture and their traditional music, and now with this bloody unreasonable war that my country started, it was rather hard to find enjoyment in entertainment videos especially from the Western countries (of course, the word "hard" in this context is just nothing compared to the hardships of those hiding from the bombs). So, bumping into such a heartwarming and at the same time musically helpful video on your channel just blew my mind in the best sence ever, I never expected that. I'm so grateful to you for this! My huge thanks and deepest respect for you!❤ ...And, naturally, Слава Україні! 💙💛 P.S. Let me speak from my heart and recommend an amazing TH-cam channel dedicated to the sopilka and named "Sopilka" (surprise, surprise) - th-cam.com/users/Sopilka - by a nice Ukranian girl named Tetiana. Sorry for too many words. Recorders rule!
Brilliant 👏👏! Also, not usually a fan of Hip-Hop / "commercial" Rap, but kudos tu Kalush for having integrated in their song those two "ethnic" instruments, it's not every day you see an overtone flute in a "Popular" song.
Sarah! You've maybe seen this, but I stumbled across it today and thought you'd find it interesting. The tylynka (spelling?) player from Kalush Orchestra describes the instrument himself in this interview (with subtitles!) Here's a link to the part of the video where he describes the instrument: th-cam.com/video/8nsdKuyv4Mo/w-d-xo.html There are a few other moments in the video where they show the other more recorder-like instrument as well.
Thank you Sarah for this video. Ukraine's stunning entry from last year (Go A / Shum) also features a beautiful sopilka solo that might interest you and the subscribers.

Aha! At last! I asked once before about a strange black ebonite recorder I found, which has more holes than a recorder, and is the size of a descant. It has two reinforced thumb holes at the back, and eight holes at the front. 3 metal bands decorate it. It has a very worn trademark that appears to have Cyrillic characters. Unfortunately my fingers are no longer flexible enough to cover these holes with their odd spacing. So it's a Ukrainian sopilka! A little treasure in my ethnic flute collection.
@@Team_Recorder Yes! I found a Ukrainian TH-cam channel where they play traditional music with these lovely instruments, in brilliant national costumes. Also a video of a man who makes sopilkas. Now the mystery remains - how did a Ukrainian sopilka find its way to a junk shop in Tasmania ?!
Hello I really appreciate your videos.. I have a problem identifying the type of flute instrument used in Chrono trigger - Secret of the forest, can I use a tin whistle or a clark? And which of them serve such higher notes? Thank you very much!
I mentioned in another comment that in the national selection video one could also see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trembita featured, I suspect that is what you might hear as a very low woodwind sound, but I am not 100% sure (I am not very good at discerning different sounds when listening to music myself, unfortunately)
The high countermelody has a sharp fourth degree (or is it a flat fifth degree). Is that a traditional Ukrainian scale? Reminds me of the flatted fifths used by jazz players from the bebop school.
It looks like the traditional Ukrainian (or Romanian) minor scale, where the fourth and the sixth degrees are sharp - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_Dorian_scale - though the word "scale" is more of a theoretical thing here
Hello from Ukraine. That was amazing. I`m really happy that Ukrainian culture is traveling around the world. Thank you.
