thankyou Patricia for the thoughtful gift.
so down to the nitty gritty...DOes anyone know the history of a hackamore such as this one
it seems hand crafted, from 1961 or earlier.
we would love to hear more!!
What a thoughtful and sentimental gift. How beautiful it is. The gifter Patricia is so generous to give away a wedding present from so long ago (even older than me) shared with her late husband. Wow!
Nice gift. I just found your channel a couple of days ago. You’re an adorable young family living the dream. I admire what you’re doing. Piper is in the best hands with her new family. Kindest Regards, Neandra from Northwest Florida 🐴⭐️🙏🏼🐎🥰
It’s an Indian Bitless Handmade Hackamore it’s really beautiful what a lovely present, Ranger is modelling it very nicely
Did a bit of research here on Google.. I think it's a Prison Hitched Horsehair Headstall with Bosel. You really might want to do some research and maybe have it appraised because some of the vintage ones online are a couple thousand dollars. It is a beautiful handmade piece of history. Look forward to seeing what you find out about it.
I just love your channel. Your horses are just beautiful, and Candice, your laugh is contagious. Makes me smile every time I hear your joy.😂😂😂 I love the time and efforts you put in with all the orphaned foals. It's very hard work taking care of babies. Thank you for your content! ❤🐴❤🐴❤🐴❤🐴❤🐴❤🐴

Tried to take off web address
It's in Cowboy and Indian magazine
from April 2016 addition
Hitched Horsehair and bridles from prison and its history.
That looks like a Montana Prison Bosal. Certain prisons in the U.S.--in Colorado, Texas, Montana--had handicraft programs. Those old bosals and horsehair mecates and headstalls are collector's items now.
@dbbraiding9797 on TH-cam can tell you how to put the bosal and headstall on, most likely. It looks like Jordan put the bosal (over-the-nose fancy piece) on right side up, but the headstall (the rest of it, except the mecate rein) is twisted sideways and upside down under Ranger's head.
I was wondering if it might now be a collector's item!
The top bit goes across his forehead above his eyes
Looks like an Indian hackamore. Pretty cool.
Beautiful gift! Ranger definitely made a good model!
Patricia is one amazing lady. My first Hackamore was made from baling twine, my dad showed me how to make them*^- big mistake- haha! Our neighbor had 75 acres right next to us and as a 8 yr old I was in heaven. With havkamore in hand I rode most of the 30 mates he had. He didn’t live on the property and during the summer I had free rein( so to speak) later we found out that only one of the horses was broke to ride. I had several adventurous summers with those horses, the most amazing time of my life! Somehow the horses knew I wasn’t going to hurt them and just wanted to be with them, all I had was my twine hackamore and all those gorgeous Appaloosa’s!
wow sounds a beautiful story to write down . all the adventures.
What an awesome growing up!
Ranger is such a good boy. Lovely gift ❤
It looks like a Native American horsehair hackamore. I have a similar one from long ago. I found mine at a local horse sale sometime in the early 70's. Nobody seemed interested in it, I think it's beautiful!!!
Wow Patricia, so awesome of you to gift this to them! Has obviously been treasured to be around this long. Candice & Jordan will give it a good home.
Ranger likes his ball alot more than being a model ❤
Maybe an old retired farmer could help figure it out? What a beautiful and thoughtful gift!
I have a really similar one I bought at a horse fair in Mexico outside of Mexico City. It was made of horse hair and HUMAN hair, too. It has the same decorative areas on it and the adjustment loop above the ears. I've never used it, I just got it to hang on the wall.
There are 3 straps that go down, 2 go under and 2 that go over the head besides the one behind the ears. Top side has behind the ears, across the forhead between ears and eyes and the last is over the nose and connects to the strap under the mouth, short strap that holds both the bit and reins and the last goes under the head just a bit further back than the eyes, like a regular bridle. It's usually the 3rd strap at the Bit/rein strap that throws people off along with the placement and fit of the straps. It's not a halter and more like a fancy English Bridle. Im sure with some size adjustments and a photo to follow it will all turn out great! Sure has some fancy time consuming hand work in it. It would cost a pretty penny to have someone hand make one for you im sure!
Yes! You described exactly how it's supposed to go on the horse's head. Thank you.
This is truly beautiful. Exceptional. More horses should be ridden with bitless bridles. This type of tack was (and still may be) crafted by prison inmates. Would also be sweet for the grulla fillies when they grow up. Hope you can find more history on it.
When I was a kid, a lot of hackamores were rawhide, made in a teardrop shape; and a few were mechanical.
I've never seen one so nice, that is a handmade piece if art!
What a great gift, if anyone can explain it for you
Have a great day. 🐞
It's a beautiful handmade piece---but I know ZERO about horse tack, lol! But I smiled at the wedding gift in 1963---one of my older sisters got married right around the same year, and I attended, but was only 5 years old at the time. Still, it's good to remember my sister from back then. Lots of Love to Patricia!
I'd send a photo to Pat and Deb Pucket. He is an older horseman in the southwest US. He is up on the history of bits and bozilitos. He trains to build a horse with self collection from your seat and signals. He uses graduated bits types to ultimately use a signal spoon bit with a bozilito.
So thoughtful.
How absolutely lovely.
It was a very thoughtful gift.
The part near Rangers ears with decorative pieces could be a brow band and the bridle could also have a throat lash. 🙂
Thats exactly what I was thinking, the brow band would help so its not so prone to slip down.
Ranger made a good model! What a lovely gift.
The bridle is beautiful and being handmade and age makes it very unique. But what a thoughtful gift given to you.
That is awesome, looks like it was native made for sure.
Maybe it has to reins attached to different parts of the head ropes for subtle communication to the horse according to which ones are pulled? I bet when you find out it will be an amazing halter and a game changer when riding a horse. What a lovely gift.
I think the piece at the top goes over an ear. Which will help hold in place and yes looks like that hooks under the neck. I'd use Mr. Google Pants for more help. Beautiful Gift for sure. Peace from WV
Ranger is such a goof
What a nice piece of home craftsmanship! It looks like an old-style bosal hackamore - and might need a bit of reassembly. I can't tell from your video but the mecate/reins (a bit shorter than you'd find today) might be made from horsehair. That's a typical piece that goes with a bosal hackamore. I think that pretty loop at the poll is meant to hang over his forehead kind of like a browband - mainly decorative. The basic bosal just goes over the nose and hangs from a headstall with reins attached with various types of knots behind the horse's muzzle. The bosal is commonly stiff braided leather but I've seen homemade ones like this - likely made out of horsehair. Nice gift! Enjoy!
It looks like it will fit comfortably with cushion over the nose. Very thoughtful. Looks like Ranger will enjoy it and he looks handsome with it
Yea looks like a macrame/crochet on the details. The strap and loop under his chin is what you secure it in length with so secure knot on that to keep it in place ❤
It's a lovely handmade bosal and headstall and I think it's made of horsehair with a rawhide nose piece. I have a similar one of braided horsehair although it's a much simpler design. It will be interesting to see how it all works out. Its really a wonderful gift!
Beautiful gift.
What a lovely gift, so thoughtful
In regards to the hackamore, I think the small loop at the top of the head, should go around the right ear of the horse.
I love ranger ❤❤
You might check Pat and Deb they are out of southern California. He is a wealth of knowledge about bosals and other things.
It`s a diamond halter
Beautiful
Hey, can you ask Patricia to send you a photo of it on a horse? I would ask her, just in case.
The colors and materials look perfect for ranger. Great gift, of which I am sadly ignorant!
That top part looks like it is the headband. The single rope under the chin is for leading and tying. I think.
There are some good photos of Bosalita with fancy headstals on Pinterest. I don't do social media so I could only see a couple, but I think one piece goes around the ears and it has a piece that goes down the middle of the face from in front of the ears to the bosal. It's a center tie bosalita. Yours is a really nice gift!
Looks like a bitless bridle to me... the top piece goes around the head I think... Thanks for sharing
With all the helpful comments, you should have it figured out in no time. Can't wait to see how it looks when it's all on the right way.
Very intricate and beautiful
No idea what kind it is, but how beautiful 😍😍, what a lovely gift. Really nice that you are enjoying it after it's first use❤❤
Beautiful! How sweet to send it to you. Im sure you’ll fi d out the needed info.
If I remember correctly. There is a piece that runs straight down the front of the horses face and attaches to the noseband.
Looks like Mexican Bosal's I have several in my tack room... I have never used a bit on my horses....
The tassle looking part you had over his head looks like a browband
Horsehair bosal. Indian War bridle. Mustang bit less bridle.
It's beautiful and meaningful. May be better for display than for use.
It looks similar to a Mustang bitless halter bridle?
5:24 I figuerd out how it goes on the horse. This Hackamore is a combination of a bridle and a halter. Bothe share the nosepiece. The neckrope is atached on both sides to the nosepiece. Untie the knot of the neckrope, which atache the neckrope to the nosepiece. Pul the neckrope shorter and tie the knot back in. Do this on both sides until it fits. This are the two pieces of the bridle. The second rope which is attached in the middle of the neckrope should slide through the attachementpoint. This is the neckpiece of the halter. If it slides throug the attachmentpoint there, pull it on the leftside of the horsehead down and attache it to the loose part under the chaw, which is conected under the chin to the nosepiece. This to parts are the halter. I would be happy to know if it works, may be in a short where Ranger wears it . Sorry for my bad english but I'm from Germany.
The horse I had when I was young was much better riding with a hackamore. It's so nice of them to send you.
It looks like something the vaqueros in California used on horses (“jaquima” is the Spanish word that “hackamore” comes from). Are the mecate (reins) made from horse hair?
That is beautiful!! ❤❤
Its called a bosal. Its Mexican made. My dad used these on our horses. ❤
A bitless bridle? Very pretty! Hope you figure it out!🚙🐗🇺🇸
Is it hand woven from horsehair? Beautiful piece.
It looks like the top by his mane has an ear wrap with the red braid on the front of the ears. Definitely needs some testing to see how it fits better.
I think the loop on the top of his head goes over his ear to keep the bridle in place.
I think it's a browband hackamore, does that upper piece fit across his forehead?
It looks so pretty
There are youtube videos on how to fit the bosal.
Thanks
A good hackamore horse is good to have. some horses work better in a hackamore than a bit. to be able to be good at both is a Vaqeuro's tradition.
beautiful gift
Cool😊
❤️
❤❤❤
I think the loop should go around the right ear...
Is it made from mane hair?
Maybe that loop on top goes over an ear.. I agree handmade Indian riding hack. If not Mexican
i don't know what it is. what does a bozel look like ? it is nice though !
The bozel (bozal?) is the fancy red-white-black striped thing over Ranger's nose. The rest of the device is a headstall and rein.
Spanish, S American? Hmmm ❤❤
There arev100 different ideas of what it is lol 😂. Good luck 🍀
It is a bitless hackmore bridle with a lead rope it is a native American made and you should look up what tribe it came from by asking the person who sent it to you and then you can find out how it gose on the horses that is how you know how to use it
I wish it was made by a Native American, but it looks like bosals/headstalls/mecates that used to be made out of horsehair and yarn in prisons in Western states in the U.S. between the 1950's and 1970's. It's probably worth a fortune because it's in such good condition.
Mexican Horsehair hacamore
Maybe she could send a pic of one of her horses wearing it.
Whatever it is, it is bitless, the only humane way to ride.
