i will say, it's one thing if the basic lands had actual art on them similar to what they do for Secret Lairs like "Here's basic lands with Urza at different places" but no of course not. And i'm sure WotC has old promos floating around they could had easily handed out and at least those volunteering to be a judge would be content. Imagine getting a free Food Chain with that amazing art for free, and there's so many others.
The accumulated filth of all their misplays and cheating will foam up about their waists and all the Spikes and Johnnys will look up and shout 'JUDGE!'...and I'll look down and whisper 'No.
Rather than Wizzers using free labor in exchange for cards, the Judge Academy took your money in exchange for cards. Sounds like quite a racket for both of them really.
So to become a judge you had to pay and if you wanted to learn more you had to pay more? Sounds like they adopted the Scientology model. Quite fitting since both parties are dealing with fantasy elements
There is no need for the judges anymore, because you don’t need a judge for Arena. The software is the judge. The pro tour will only be playing on Arena and WotC doesn’t care about the peasants that play at their local LGS. They want the peons playing Arena and only collecting cardboard. They are trying the same thing with D&D. The people running WotC and D&D are ex-Microsoft execs….
Not that i expect to see it but i would love to hear WOTC's reasoning behind eliminating the Judge academy and how they plan on how to move forward. I am not a judge but if i was other than helping out at my local LGS i would not do any judging as things currently stand.
There won't be judges anymore. On arena the program is the judge and that's it. There are less and less organized paper magic tournaments and I think that hasbro/wotc will shut them down one by one
All the bowl of petunias thought as it plummeted toward the rocky terrain below was, "Oh no, not again". Many have speculated why the bowl of petunias had that specific thought as it fell, positing that should we understand the thought process of an improbable pot of flora plummeting toward the earth, we might have a better understanding of our place in the universe.
They had a good model, then cut a few corners to save money. Saw it worked, and said, this is what we will do moving forward. Then they made more cuts, saw it worked, and added that to the model. Then they increased product and prices and saw increased revenue. Saw it worked, and added that to the model. Now, they have no idea what made them profitable in the first place due to the cut corners and bloat. Now, wizards is a bloated, mutated mess, and have no idea what they used to be and what they are now.
Honestly, the most common sentiment among judges I've seen has been "They've lasted longer, than I expected". Judge level and certification hasn't meant anything for a long time now. TOs picked from a pool of judges, they (or people working for them) know with confirmed skills and will still be doing so. The only meaningful difference is no more conference foils and that's basically it. Pokemon and FaB do fairly well with their judge programs. It's sad to see the oldest and most famous TCG on the market are not able to keep up with them in these areas.

I stopped judging when the Judge Academy was created. It was created and run by a TO that would have me drive 90+ miles just to be on call for an event and then never need me.
Honestly, as a former judge myself, it's for the best. Every other year or so WotC would make a change that would turn the judge program for the worse. I wish people talked more about how WotC treats judges like garbage.
I was a L2 judge and TO at one point. I liked getting paid in lunches and usually got a box/event. Back before every LGS could have a prerelease, I'd work for a Premier TO and get paid for every flight/draft that I ran. I'd also TO/judge/play in our LGS's FNM and casual events but for a discounted entry fee. Being a judge used to be fun and incentivized but now it's just a hassle. I'm perfectly fine answering questions at our events without having "certification".
The smaller pool of judges under Hasbro seems likely. They're like celebrity spokespersons they can regulate and observe closely. There are certainly ways they could even put numbers in black on their earnings sheets if they market merch from these judges like pre-made decks, boxes, and other mtg play materials.
So the new pro tour won't have judges? What is going to be like a honor system where they ask no one to cheat to win the price money cause you know that's never been a problem
I completely disagree with you about where Wizard's priority lies. It has lied within the realm of extracting as much money from their bases wallets as possible since 2021, consequences be damned.
@@michaelwintermantel9127 I meant more as of they started really quadrupling down into excess product and increased prices amongst their highest grossing year.
I dont blame WOTC for this. The litigation from volunteer program (who wanted to be paid) is still cascading across all hobby games. Miniature wargaming, tcg's, etc. they are all afraid to sponsor volunteer programs. It destroyed many local gaming clubs as you really need a champion for the game at your LGS.
When i became a judge for 20 U$. I got counterspell, Incinerate & a deck of playing cards. Plus a letter saying i had to pay to renew my judge membership. (the letter was send at the start of the new year. A lot of people must not have paid to renew.)
No what Wizards wants is for the judges to pay them to be in the academy rather than the third party one. Just wait for the subscription to turn up in Arena. I would also not be surprised if there is purchase and participation requirements on Arena to even get an invite to the Judge Academy. Also I think you are right with the Pro Tour judges,, why would they go to all the trouble of locking down the Pro players and not the judges with NDA, I feel like that it's probably plugging a Loop hole there.
Kinda not shocked by this happening after magicon vegas. didn't see any of the typical black shirt judges at the events and it felt a little jarring in that they were all wearing blue 'event organizer' tshirts (like it was a hasty change)
It wasn't long ago we were all talking about how crappy the judge academy was. They will most likely go back to the old way of having tests. And sending cards for judging events without any oversight.
Patrons rule, and rightfully so. We judge, we make the rulings. I guess there will be some "core Judges" that are tightly bound to WotC and any other can call themselves "rules advisor". Will there be more Judge promos? Perhaps, but with only a limited number of them these promos will likely be more like the "heroes of the realm", i.e. something more personal than the general selection of cards handed out over the last years. Funny thing, that judge promo Island can become of the more expensive ones as it was hard to come by - unless the crumbling judge academy got plenty of them and now hands them out along with the rest because they just don't care anymore.
Honestly, many judges I've met are obnoxious pricks. They parade around as if they are king of the nerds or something and half the time they are wrong when making a call.
Ever since this happened, my local LGS has had a lot of issues on regards to rules, because the owner and the person in charge are not the best on regards to rules. I decided to stop playing because of this.
So much happening right now. At the core, outsourcing your judge program could’ve been sensible, maybe they can or have already found a better partner to do so? 🤔
do I get the free membership just so I can run the tests and see if their 'study resources' are actually informative? I mean Ive considered pursuing judge certification before, and even if it can't be officially anymore through the academy, it COULD be a study guide, right?
