My wife and I took our family camping for 19 years during which time we developed an elaborate kitchen set up that I also used in my work-related wilderrness camps. Cast iron served as the principal cookware, including a 12- and 14-inch Dutch oven. I never bothered using a lid lifter. I found a fiberglass glove and added a large pair of vice grip pliers. Thinking on it, had I thought about it, I would have preferred a lid lifter but my way worked for almost 20 years and it didnt cost me anything.

Glad to see Mrs Shannon out from behind the camera. I'm with you Mr Kent I partial to handmade lifters when you ain't cooking with them you can always use them for a cattle prod if you have to

We used the 14" Mair in Boy Scouts when cooking on a Camp Dutch Oven Cooking Table when the longer lifter is too tall. Lodge makes a cooking table and there are several other manufacturers . This is handy when you can't build a fire on the ground or have a bad back.

Had no idea how good i had it with 2 Gmaws that used cast iron on a regular bases. Every thing from fried chicken to pancakes it was all good. my family uses c.i. now on regular basis and our dutch oven is by far the best. it doesnt matter what weather it is. we use it. By the way my poker is from our fire place. welded a 5in long flat iron piece for stability with the lid and its been great. Great video from you two. enjoy learning.

Great information!!! You two are wonderful to watch!!! And for the whole family too, my wife and I are blessed with four little girls that adore watching you both together. Hopefully one day in the future I'll be surrounded by multiple, American Made, dutch ovens cooking your wonderful recipes as my wife and I kick back on the porch with some cold sweet tea. You betcha I'll be cleaning a shotgun or two at the same time lol. Thank you both very much!!!
Oh almost forgot, you also have the cleanest comments section of any YT site that I've perused and for the amount of subscribers that you have that's really saying something. Well done!

When I bought my first dutch oven, I didn't buy a lid lifter, so I used a "pants" coat hanger. Other than being unstable, and not really strong, it worked great. The cardboard piece where the pant hung, at least kept me from burning my hands. Needless to say, it didn't take me long to start looking for a lid lifter. Finding one I liked was a little more difficult. I wish I had seen this video then.

Those are nicer than what I have used. When I was in Boy Scouts we used a sturdy ladle with a hook handle. Of course wear a glove, but you could scope up coals with the ladle part and then flip it over and lift the lid with the hook handle. Down side you couldn't shake the lid off. I am thinking about getting a dutch oven, I will have to get one of these as well.

Camp Maid makes a very unique one that I wish was longer, but it is designed to store in a 12 or larger dutch oven. Thank you for the review. I like Kent's horse shoe one. No bending for my messed up back. God bless you both.

Kent, I was in The Patriot Guard Riders for 5 years & we used rebar to stake flags in the ground at veterans' funerals. The flag poles were made of hollow PVC pipe, so we staked the flags in the rebar. And one of my best friends, we call him Horseshoe. He makes everything known to man, out of horseshoes, so I like the first one. He made me a trivit out of horseshoes. Use whatcha got! :)

Once again thanks Kent and Shannon for another awesome video and the info on the lid lifters. Quick question, is there anyone out there making the lifters with a "C" style locking mechanism that you could flip over to hold the two handle/gripss together when you squeeze them so that if you were to let go for any reason the lid lifter would stay locked to the lid. Kinda like when you depress a #330 Conibear trap together so the trap don't come back and bite ya if you slip off the handle for some reason. Just a thought and my two cents. I think it would be great if they did, that way someone male/female with a weak grip could let go and shake the coals/ash of the top not worrying if they have the strength to squeeze the grips for a length of time. As always thanks for all you do and please continue with the great videos. Thanks Brian

    • @CowboyKentRollins

Kent, I'm only a few hours from Silver Dollar City & I'm just SICK that I can't come down there & have you & Shannon sign my cookbook, but I'm trying to pay for my daughter's college. Are you there every day? Cause I might run away & come down anyway :)
