  • Are you interviewing for a teaching job? Did the principal ask you, "What would your reading and math block look like in your classroom?" This is a difficult question for new teachers with little experience. In this video, I show you how to effectively answer these questions. In addition, the methods discussed in this video will help you when planning and delivering instruction. You will learn about:
    - Objectives
    - Gradual release model
    - Observations
    - Formative assessments
    - How to use data to drive instruction
    - Classroom management

    I worked in a young offenders unit before I became a teacher and your advice about disruptive students is spot on. When you set clear expectations with them and ask them to help you the game changes.

    You really are AMAZING! I have bought all of your praxis materials for early childhood and passed both core tests. Going to take my last in a few weeks. I am almost there with my TTT program and will interview for a teaching position next week grades K-3. I'm very nervous! I have taught preschool for 20 years but want to teach older students, so I need to practice how to answer for Elementary-age children questions. Again, your info is the absolute best!!! I thank you so much!!!

      Thank you so much for your kind words! Congratulations on passing your core tests and nearing the completion of your TTT program. With 20 years of preschool experience, you've got a strong foundation to build on. For your interview, focus on how your preschool expertise prepares you for teaching elementary students. Best of luck - you've got this!

    As far as praising positive behavior, I agree yet when I took a Responsive Classroom seminar and they suggested that we shouldn’t celebrate when kids meet expectations, I believe it’s like 50-50; what do you think?
    THANKS AGAIN🙏🏼🤞🏼

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I am glad you are finding value in the videos. Praising positive behavior can be subjective however, I taught so many students that had disabilities, behavioral problems, emotional problems, etc. that when they did anything right we celebrated. In my opinion there is so much negativity surrounding students that a joyous, positive culture in my classroom allowed my students to relax and take pride in their work. What worked in my classroom doesn't necessarily translate to every classroom, but I will tell you I made gains every year with my students because I built up their self-esteem. Thanks for watching.

    If interviewer ask question "if large number of your students failed in your subject what will you do"

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this scenario it depends on the context. Student achievement is always the responsibility of the teacher no matter what. The best answers for this are 1) Analyze the data and find out which standards the students struggled with. If there is a large number of students failing, then the lesson may have been confusing and you as a teacher need to reflect on the teaching that took place. Admitting this doesn't mean that you are a bad teacher, it just could have been many factors like a bad lesson, confusion among students, etc. 2) Focus on the gains that were made. If this were a scenario for a summative assessment, try and mine the data to see if there were gains made and focus on that. In either case, if you are asked this question always make sure to consult the data and make sure whomever is interviewing you knows that in a situation like this you are able to adapt (key word) as a teacher and work on improving student achievement.

    What are the best things to say and do when the principal takes me to a classroom to observe during an interview.

    • @KathleenJasperEdD
      @KathleenJasperEdD  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would thank him or her for the opportunity to observe another teacher. This is a really amazing tactic, and not may principals take the time to do this. I would also identify one or two things that are really interesting and effective that the teacher does. You might say, "I really liked how the teacher reviewed the objectives during her lesson." Or, "This teacher has really good classroom management." I would NOT be critical at all. Do not point out anything negative. You are a guest, so mind your manners :)
      Hope that helps.
