Woody, thanks for taking us there and for sharing the complicated emotions you felt. I have yet to make it to the St. Cyril Methodius Church and see the crypt. You have to wonder what those final moments were like for the ones who ended up taking their own lives to not only save themselves the almost certain torture and death at the hands of the SS but also I'm sure they did not want to be compelled under torture to reveal operational secrets or be made to speak against their fellow countrymen. These are 100% heroic actions by these men who had an average age of 24 years old. As a soldier myself (now retired) who spent the last 20 years deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan, I find myself wondering if I could have mustered the same courage and fortitude these men displayed on that day in June. Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

The 70s film operation daybreak has the most powerful ending heart rending in my opinion. Nothing but respect for what went on in the crypt in the final moments.

Woody. What can I say? This is great episode and ends your Prague venture fantastically! Having read books, watched films, this has been the most thought provoking. To actually see footage where the siege ended was so interesting and moving. A big thank you. Bob

It is a somber tribute to a last stand of men who chose to fight rather than surrender to those of the same ilk as the monster Rheinhard Heydrich. Good video, and finer words, Woody.

Thanks for another fine video, and very well said.
I remember a villager from Chechnya who had lost his family when a random shell landed on his house. He said he didn't know who started the war, he only knew it wasn't him.
You summed up this sentiment well, it's unavoidable and not a choice for the vast majority of people, and isn't necessarily over when the current occupier is defeated.

thank you for another valuable presentation full of new facts/incites and of course the crushing emotional wrench of a tragic tale of death and cruelty. your photos/vid are bloody brilliant.

I was there in 2017 and was alone with my now wife (who has no history bone in her body) she now counts it as a highlight due to the atmosphere.

Well said about the two different ways of thinking with emotional and analytical hats. Historians and those interested in history need to balance both.

Well said, Woody. walking by the outside of the Cathedral as I did one can't really understand the transcendence of what happened in these infamous 1942 days. As you say sometimes one must wear the "emotional hat" and you did it for us, thank you for the content!

You are spot on with the hats analogy, one of the many things I took away from the tour. Really enjoyed your perspective and feelings from the visit.

So interesting to hear your thoughts, you describe them and the feelings so well. I was in Prague 9 years ago and hadn’t read as much history by then as now. I would have loved to visit the cathedral, and hopefully I can do that in the future sometime. Not sure if you made a visit to the Jewish Cemetery. It is an experience like no other.

I love how you ended this. Love and care for other human beings ( I also add in animals, plants, water, soil, air, nature, the planet and the universe as we are all connected and we can't survive without any one of these) is the factor that matters and what connects us and gives us balance. You can disagree and respectfully move on without the disagreed person, country or ideology directly impacting your life, but you have no right to force others to believe and live in the manner that you find acceptable. This is the way I have worded it for years based on my experiences and it has worked out for me. Anytime i get to explain it, people tend to understand and accept it as it is. I have lived without informed consent and had to learn it all the hard way, religion, politics, science, money, education and all the other entitlements and privileges. Now I try to live by my standards. I fight every day to advocate for my rights and freedoms, and I allow others to their own rights and freedoms. I have figured out my boundaries and I assert my boundaries. Education never ends, repeating history taught me that. Thank you for sharing your passions. If i ever get to Europe, it would be wonderful for you to be my tour guide. I love how you have your tactical hat and empathy hat.

I feel I’m more on the emotional side. To me when all is said and done it’s the people who suffer both civilians and soldiers who went through so much.

I was lucky to be able to enter the Cathedral too, it's really impressive once you know what happened there.
Does anybody know how many Germans, SS or not where killed in the assault of the Cathedral?

  • @Digmen1

Woody when you say that the Hungarians allied with Germany, was that most Hungarians or just the leaders?
This applies to many wars and conflicts
Eg I wonder how many Russian people agree with Putin invading Ukraine?

    • @WW2TV

The Germans captured them and took them there under guard, no-one escaped
