I was hoping that I could do it at Exeter but it is not a partner university of my university here, so I can't afford it. The uni looks so lovely... It might be helpful to look into Holly Gabrielle, also! She faced a rejection from her university of choice (I believe it was Cambridge if I’m not mistaken), took a gap year, went to another University (UCL) and ultimately got her masters at Cambridge. I’m not too well-versed on UK university admissions (as I’m a hs student from the US and there are rule differences - like apparently you can only apply for Oxford OR Cambridge in the same academic year, while there aren’t rules like that here (you can apply for the same set of Universities, like the University of California system, at different locations - much less two non-associated schools). Anyways, wishing you all the best and hope you have an amazing time learning medicine at Exeter (especially as a hs biomedical student).
I’ve not been doing great recently. I’ve let work pile up, my room get messy, and got back into bad habits. Today I showered, cleaned my teeth, tidied my room, and am currently curled up in freshly washed bedsheets to watch this video. Your videos always give me a nice warm feeling :)
dear ruby, i felt the exact same exhaustion after my first week back in person at my uni, so i feel you! ❤️ it's perfectly normal, we had a different rhythm back home and while it also took time to get used to, we felt very comfortable so it's kinda like a big shock to be back in our "regular" in person days! I'm wishing you good luck this term, especially with your dissertation! thank you for keeping us motivated and please don't forget to take breaks regularly! it's really easy to get a full dive into school work but it won't be worth it in the long haul! remember to relax and enjoy your sunny days too~ 🌞 keep being amazing! ❤️
Hi Ruby! I'm slowly leaving my comfort zone to type this 😅 I'm a few years older than you, but I just wanted to let you know how much you inspire me to be more productive and ambitious... But not with that aggressive "girl boss" attitude, if that makes sense. I will start my master's degree on the first week of October, and I'm already familiarizing with some of the topics I'm going to study in English lit. You're not the only one inspired by Ruby! I finished my master's degree last year, during the worst part of corona in my country (wrote most of it from my bed, because I didn't even have a desk at the time). Also did English Lit. I wish you luck! :))
What i found most draining was the distance one actually covers in a day going between lectures and seminars. Plus getting to uni in the first place and back home. Also the other thing that was really draining for me was as an autistic and fairly reclusive person happened to be the social interaction it was exhausting. Trying to figure out other people keeping up a good personal front, masking or attitude and paying attention to others in so draining. I am glad you made it through the first day.
I think it is quite normal to be drained after something like this. Getting back to uni/work/school etc at this point is almost as huge of a conversion as going into lockdown was 1,5 years ago. We have become used to working and studying from home and adapted to a less social life style, and those of us who've been unable to work from home have still gotten used to less traffic, less passengers on public transportations and a lot less co workers, because so many of our co workers hsve been working from home, evan though we couldnt. It will probably take weeks or evan months to get used to not beeing in lockdown anymore.
Being exhausted after a day of classes is so recognisable! I study at the music academy, but same for me, it's very intense being in a big group away from your home when you haven't done that in a while!
I went back to university a week ago and it still feels so surreal to be back on campus! I'm so happy to be able to go back to the library for long study sessions, to see people on campus, to see the teachers... I've been watching your videos lately, I mean the old ones, because your videos always motivate me. I feel like we grow out together because I started watching your videos back in 2016 when I was 17 and now we're both at university!! I hope this year will be joyful and of course productive! I changed my master’s thesis topic halfway through my first year of grad school… don’t worry, it all works out in the end! Better to start late studying something you are truly interested in and love than to battle through with a topic that you’re not passionate about.
I feel like Ruby’s voice sounds a bit lower than usual. I love her voice whether it’s a bit high or low anyway though (since I don’t really know her personally)! Your modules sound amazing!! I am enjoying my own memories of the first day of university classes although I attended a small (fewer than 2000 students) liberal arts university overlooking the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, California. I would have loved your Dickens module!! I also majored in Literature with minors in Philosophy and History and then attended graduate school at a slightly larger private university, concentrating my Master of Arts studies in British medieval literature, 19th century British literature, and poetry. We had comprehensive examinations in place of a thesis, and I took my exams in the above three topics. I then taught at both of my former universities which I very much enjoyed. I do hope that you will also teach at the university level; your love of academia and literature in particular plus your passion for education (as seen in every vlog you post) would make you an inspirational professor!! Omg Ruby I can relate so much to being drained after starting back at university. I am starting my second year and was on campus for two half days Monday and Tuesday (9:30-12:30) and I am soooo exhausted after them. I can’t remember being this drained after being at university. After loosing 18 months of campus activity, I’ve lost all stamina I had. Really need to regain my stamina. Wishing you a great academic year!! 😁

I also felt exhausted after my first week back! It was pretty overwhelming to see crowds again, and I had pretty long naps coming home after my lectures haha. I'm in my second week now, and things are getting better!

To add a topic to the list of possible dissertation topics, but including your love for etiquette books and the like; familiarise with Norbert Elias and his theory. He discusses how etiquette is involved with our internal psychology and external state organisation and everything in between. It's really interesting and so widely applicable!

I think its because I literally just spent my whole life going to in person classes in school and uni that spending a whole year at home just wiped my brain clean almost completely of what it's like to sit through actual classes. I'm not surprised if you feel drained. Having got back to work as normal this last month, I have felt likewise - I know children at school are finding things draining too, so it's a bit of a constant at every level of education and beyond! Take the best possible care of yourself, Ruby. And regarding dissertation choice: you are indeed not alone in finding it difficult. I had that same uncertainty as a student, and talking with supervisors did indeed help. In my case, one of them dissuaded me from going for a particular topic, whilst another encouraged me to go for one about which I had an obviously greater enthusiasm and could apply the broadest range of my skills. Playing to your strengths is a sure path towards high marks for the finished project and a better overall result for your degree.
This may sound weird but you inspired me to pursue a minor in English literature! I’ve always loved literature, but since English is not my first language, it felt intimidating for me to do an English literature program in an English speaking country/university. However I mustered enough courage to declare the minor and I’ve been enjoying every minute of it!! So I just want to say thank you :))

Really lovely video Ruby! And I totally relate to the uncomfortable feeling of filming in classes. I filmed something of the atmosphere in my class for my first day back to uni video, but not much more than that, only some general shots of the hallways etc. But anyway, I loved to see your enthusiasm about your modules and good luck on deciding on the dissertation topic!

One thing is for sure we are gonna feel drained for the first few weeks when we begin our uni and school It will take us 1 to 2 months to adjust and get used to it

In regards to the inability to choose between dissertation topics, I feel you Ruby! Although I'm not working on a dissertation, I've been struggling immensely with choosing a topic to focus on for a research paper. I would love to know your process in regards to narrowing down a topic and how you go about beginning such a project...maybe in a future video? I really had a hard time choosing a dissertation topic... What I feel is the most important is to choose the right teacher to write it under - that makes a huge difference. The topic itself... choose something that feels good, you'll always make it your own...
It was my first day back in uni yesterday and I was exhausted after! I'm also doing my dissertation and choosing the topic was so stressful as I had no idea what to write so your definitely not alone!!

I had the same experience going back to campus. I enjoy it much more but I'm exhausted. This is my third week and I still feel the same way, I hope I get used to it soon.
Being super exhausted after a day of classes is so relatable omg! I'm still doing online school but even then I completely crash after doing classes throughout the day! Honestly at this rate I don't think I'll even be able to SURVIVE in-person classes when it resumes because I lost that habit like, two years ago😂 but jokes apart, I sometimes feel guilty when I feel exhausted after online classes, thinking about how if it were in-person classes, I'd go back to revision and homeworks and what not right after, and how I've lost my work ethic. But that's not true. There is SO much stress going on than there was when I was at school two years ago. I'm HUMAN. I'm not perfect and if my body can't handle it, I'm not gonna push it. To everyone out there, please don't beat yourself up thinking about how "Unproductive" You are. Please prioritise your physical, emotional and mental well-being above everything else! This culture of rush of productivity is toxic, and not everyone's flexibility, capability or interests are the same! Just because someone studying for eight hours helps them, doesn't mean it will help you too! My mama always says, Quality > Quantity. Take a break now and then, and work according to your comfort. We are human beings, not machines! Please take care of yourselves!! I love y'all 🥺 you got this loves 💗💗
my advice is to pick a dissertation topic that you get all fired up about and love to chat with people about. it's a long old slog getting it done so you really need that passion to drive you through, rather than picking something that sounds interesting or clever but doesn't fire you up in the same way. i always thought your idea about victorian childhood sounded like the best fit for you as you're so passionate about the victorian period. also remember that, while you will need to choose a topic area soon, the exact focus can remain nebulous until the last minute (i think mine gained its exact focus and title like a month before it was due). good luck pinning down an idea.
How exiting to be back on campus! I am just starting to pack and will move to uni next week! We will have some classes online and some in person and I am very exited to go back to studying since I had a rather long period between switching my programmes. I have discovered your videos during that time and I really hope they can keep me inspired and more organised when I start classes!
I just yesterday sketched out new ideas for my dissertation. I am very scared, because I am not very confident in my abilities of the originality of the topic 😞 By the way, I also study Literature ☺️ My main interests are German and Scandinavian authors.
I am the worst at making a decision as well goodluck with the dissertation, seeing you'll work on it a while, choose something you love and enjoy researching, then you'll truly have fun and do a good dissertation on top of it. Hehe you'll enjoy getting into the nitty gritty of the books and different perspectives or arguments the writers put forward. I used to love hunting down the primary and secondary sources and then burying me he in books or articles for weeks on end :) I know it sounds nerdy but hey I just love the systematic approach to making a paper come together from all the sources I have collected its fun for me at least. When I did history or archaeology stuff it felt like detective work too :).

Re dissertation, it's definitely not just you! I start third year next week (psychology) and a few people I know (I don't know many people!) haven't decided on their dissertation yet. I have decided mine but it needs some tweaking :D don't worry. Thanks for the tip about feeling v tired. I have lectures Mondays and Tuesdays so anticipating this will be v useful when planning my week, especially at the beginning of term.
I actually love the Life & Death module and can think of many titles I read from a Catholic perspective. (E.g. Preparation for Death by St. Alphonsus Liguori)
I find classes so exhausting too now 😳 I think it's because with online classes I would just pause the videos when I got tired so my energy management was better lol too bad we can't pause the lecturer sometimes
I have to eat , I can't read or study at the same time as i get indegestion. I can take my time and be mindful of what i am eating and also it is a break from Studying, plus if my family are around i want to eat with them and chat to them.

I like Charles Dickens very much, he was a good storyteller. David Copperfield, Martin Chuzzlewit and Great expectation are my favourites so far. But there are still some books to read))

Your modules sound amazing!! I am enjoying my own memories of the first day of university classes although I attended a small (fewer than 2000 students) liberal arts university overlooking the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, California. I would have loved your Dickens module!! I also majored in Literature with minors in Philosophy and History and then attended graduate school at a slightly larger private university, concentrating my Master of Arts studies in British medieval literature, 19th century British literature, and poetry. We had comprehensive examinations in place of a thesis, and I took my exams in the above three topics. I then taught at both of my former universities which I very much enjoyed. I do hope that you will also teach at the university level; your love of academia and literature in particular plus your passion for education (as seen in every vlog you post) would make you an inspirational professor!! Omg Ruby I can relate so much to being drained after starting back at university. I am starting my second year and was on campus for two half days Monday and Tuesday (9:30-12:30) and I am soooo exhausted after them. I can’t remember being this drained after being at university. After loosing 18 months of campus activity, I’ve lost all stamina I had. Really need to regain my stamina. Wishing you a great academic year!! 😁

To add a topic to the list of possible dissertation topics, but including your love for etiquette books and the like; familiarise with Norbert Elias and his theory. He discusses how etiquette is involved with our internal psychology and external state organisation and everything in between. It's really interesting and so widely applicable!

yes omg i thought it was just me!!! In person classes are so much more exhausting than I remember!. I think its because I literally just spent my whole life going to in person classes in school and uni that spending a whole year at home just wiped my brain clean almost completely of what it's like to sit through actual classes. I'm not surprised if you feel drained. Having got back to work as normal this last month, I have felt likewise - I know children at school are finding things draining too, so it's a bit of a constant at every level of education and beyond! Take the best possible care of yourself, Ruby.
And regarding dissertation choice: you are indeed not alone in finding it difficult. I had that same uncertainty as a student, and talking with supervisors did indeed help. In my case, one of them dissuaded me from going for a particular topic, whilst another encouraged me to go for one about which I had an obviously greater enthusiasm and could apply the broadest range of my skills. Playing to your strengths is a sure path towards high marks for the finished project and a better overall result for your degree.
This may sound weird but you inspired me to pursue a minor in English literature! I’ve always loved literature, but since English is not my first language, it felt intimidating for me to do an English literature program in an English speaking country/university. However I mustered enough courage to declare the minor and I’ve been enjoying every minute of it!! So I just want to say thank you :))

In regards to the inability to choose between dissertation topics, I feel you Ruby! Although I'm not working on a dissertation, I've been struggling immensely with choosing a topic to focus on for a research paper. I would love to know your process in regards to narrowing down a topic and how you go about beginning such a project...maybe in a future video? I really had a hard time choosing a dissertation topic... What I feel is the most important is to choose the right teacher to write it under - that makes a huge difference. The topic itself... choose something that feels good, you'll always make it your own...

I had the same experience going back to campus. I enjoy it much more but I'm exhausted. This is my third week and I still feel the same way, I hope I get used to it soon.
Being super exhausted after a day of classes is so relatable omg! I'm still doing online school but even then I completely crash after doing classes throughout the day! Honestly at this rate I don't think I'll even be able to SURVIVE in-person classes when it resumes because I lost that habit like, two years ago😂 but jokes apart, I sometimes feel guilty when I feel exhausted after online classes, thinking about how if it were in-person classes, I'd go back to revision and homeworks and what not right after, and how I've lost my work ethic. But that's not true. There is SO much stress going on than there was when I was at school two years ago. I'm HUMAN. I'm not perfect and if my body can't handle it, I'm not gonna push it. To everyone out there, please don't beat yourself up thinking about how "Unproductive" You are. Please prioritise your physical, emotional and mental well-being above everything else! This culture of rush of productivity is toxic, and not everyone's flexibility, capability or interests are the same! Just because someone studying for eight hours helps them, doesn't mean it will help you too! My mama always says, Quality > Quantity. Take a break now and then, and work according to your comfort. We are human beings, not machines! Please take care of yourselves!! I love y'all 🥺 you got this loves 💗💗
my advice is to pick a dissertation topic that you get all fired up about and love to chat with people about. it's a long old slog getting it done so you really need that passion to drive you through, rather than picking something that sounds interesting or clever but doesn't fire you up in the same way. i always thought your idea about victorian childhood sounded like the best fit for you as you're so passionate about the victorian period. also remember that, while you will need to choose a topic area soon, the exact focus can remain nebulous until the last minute (i think mine gained its exact focus and title like a month before it was due). good luck pinning down an idea.
How exiting to be back on campus! I am just starting to pack and will move to uni next week! We will have some classes online and some in person and I am very exited to go back to studying since I had a rather long period between switching my programmes. I have discovered your videos during that time and I really hope they can keep me inspired and more organised when I start classes!

By the way, I also study Literature ☺️ My main interests are German and Scandinavian authors.
I am the worst at making a decision as well goodluck with the dissertation, seeing you'll work on it a while, choose something you love and enjoy researching, then you'll truly have fun and do a good dissertation on top of it. Hehe you'll enjoy getting into the nitty gritty of the books and different perspectives or arguments the writers put forward. I used to love hunting down the primary and secondary sources and then burying me he in books or articles for weeks on end :) I know it sounds nerdy but hey I just love the systematic approach to making a paper come together from all the sources I have collected its fun for me at least. When I did history or archaeology stuff it felt like detective work too :).

Re dissertation, it's definitely not just you! I start third year next week (psychology) and a few people I know (I don't know many people!) haven't decided on their dissertation yet. I have decided mine but it needs some tweaking :D don't worry.
Thanks for the tip about feeling v tired. I have lectures Mondays and Tuesdays so anticipating this will be v useful when planning my week, especially at the beginning of term.
I actually love the Life & Death module and can think of many titles I read from a Catholic perspective. (E.g. Preparation for Death by St. Alphonsus Liguori)
I am a fresher now and I am finding it so exhausting compared to school. Especially socializing so much after just being with family for two months.
I find classes so exhausting too now 😳 I think it's because with online classes I would just pause the videos when I got tired so my energy management was better lol too bad we can't pause the lecturer sometimes

I have to eat , I can't read or study at the same time as i get indegestion. I can take my time and be mindful of what i am eating and also it is a break from Studying, plus if my family are around i want to eat with them and chat to them.

I like Charles Dickens very much, he was a good storyteller. David Copperfield, Martin Chuzzlewit and Great expectation are my favourites so far. But there are still some books to read))
I think it is quite normal to be drained after something like this.
Getting back to uni/work/school etc at this point is almost as huge of a conversion as going into lockdown was 1,5 years ago.
We have become used to working and studying from home and adapted to a less social life style, and those of us who've been unable to work from home have still gotten used to less traffic, less passengers on public transportations and a lot less co workers, because so many of our co workers hsve been working from home, evan though we couldnt.
It will probably take weeks or evan months to get used to not beeing in lockdown anymore.

I don't know how I'd cope if I didn't decide my diss topic way back in May! Your department must be really flexible if they're still letting you mull it over. My deadline for deciding was before the end of second year x
