People who watch football say Ramos and non football fans say van Dijk and it is not a debate because you cannot compare 2 good years with 16 good years
Ramos obviously had a much better career and had more skills than Van Dijk (headers, shots, penalties, free kicks) however if you solely judge from defending abilities Van Dijk is much better, the man barely gets dribbled and almost never makes silly mistakes that Ramos did quite often. Defensive alone VVD has been better, other than that Ramos is a legend on his own, not many players have consistency and success.

Ramos is a legend and overall a better player than van dijk (scores more goals, better shots etc...) but defending wise Van dijk is an order of magnitude better than Ramos. You barely see VVD making silly mistakes like Ramos or getting dribbled that often. Ramos had other skills that made up for his defensive mistakes.

I can just as easily say that ramos is reckless, while VVD is very well composed when gng 1v1, VVD doesn't fly into ridiculous tackles, he holds his position, giving his teammates more time to solidify behind him. In terms of technical ability, VVD is clearly superior, if you can put your bias aside. But in terms of a overall better defender, Ramos is amongst the greatest of all time.

VVD is better at tackling, he probably has a better ratio on that department, but like Ramos is a much more complete player (headers, shots, penalties, free kicks, beautiful long balls, he can play the ball from the back like no other defender can) all of these things make him more dangerous on the offensive side and very important in the defensive side and therefore he has more presence in how the game is gonna go than vvd.
The amount of headers he scored, the amount of important goals he scored or important moments he's had is giant compared to vvd and he has been doing it for a very long time. Now in PSG and finally recovered from his injuries, is back at an elite level again at his age too where other players of his generation are already retired or on the bench or in smaller competitions... very impressive. Definitely Ramos on this one, I'd say is not even close.

Kids nowadays will say Van dijk is better bc they didnt watch prime Ramos...both have their own style of play and both are very good but Ramos faced a lot of legends in his prime and he was in prime mode for 9 years while Van dijk only 2 years...
